Joey Yung and Miriam Yeung Resolve Long-time Rivalry

Miriam Yeung’s (楊千嬅) Let’s Begin World Tour Concert kicked off on January 24 with seven shows at the Hong Kong Coliseum. The concert marks Miriam’s 20th year in the music industry, and is also the first concert series since giving birth to her son Torres in 2012.

To thank her fans for their unwavering support in the last 20 years, Miriam invited many powerhouse guest stars to perform for the encore segment of the tour. In the first show, Miriam invited Eason Chan (陳奕迅), who performed Miriam’s “The Wolf” <狼來了>. In the second show, Miriam’s long-time rival Joey Yung (容祖兒) made a surprise appearance and performed her own single, “Used to Breakups” <習慣失戀> with Miriam.

Long-time Rivalry

Miriam and Joey’s rivalry dates back to over ten years ago, when the two powerhouse divas went head-to-head to compete for Singer of the Year in various Hong Kong music awards shows. In 2004, Joey defeated Miriam and won the Gold Award for Best Female Singer at the Ultimate Song Chart Awards, leaving Miriam with Silver. Believing that she has lost in the war, Miriam finally defeated Joey at the 2015 Ultimate Song Chart Awards, capturing the Gold Award.

Wilfred Lau Helps Break Ice

Miriam and Joey’s surprise collaboration at the concert was pitched by Joey’s boyfriend, singer Wilfred Lau (劉浩龍), who is good friends with Miriam’s husband Real Ting (丁子高). At the concert, Miriam admitted that she would frequent karaoke bars whenever she had a relationship breakup. “Joey released many breakup songs then, so I sang a lot of them. But the more I sang, the lonelier I got. It didn’t help at all!”

In regards to her rivalry with Joey, Miriam admitted, “Record companies can be very petty. Having a little hostility towards each other can liven up the market. At awards ceremonies, we are all competitors. If it’s not winning, then it is me losing! Of course I’d feel a bit unhappy if I lost!” Miriam also added, “I actually think that we should have more different singers, just like [Joey] and I!”

Joey laughed and said, “Every market shouldn’t have only one product to sell. For example – we can’t have just the iPhone; we need Samsung too!”

Towards the end of the concert, Joey said she is very envious of Miriam for having already taken her next step in life. Joey admitted that she wants to get married, expressing that it is very important for a woman to have a home.

At the end of her performance, Miriam hugged Joey and said, “Thank you for being here. Thank you for being such a an outstanding competitor!”

Following Eason and Joey’s guest appearances, Aaron Kwok (郭富城), Sammi Cheng (鄭秀文), and Jacky Cheung (張學友), also made surprise appearances.

  1. Didn’t know they are not in good terms. Thought Miriam is a happy go lucky gal, never thought she would be enemy with anyone else. Well…divas will always be divas. Ego sucks. Glad they are all good now.

  2. Woah I’d never take Miriam for the type to fight with others. She always seem like she’s so chill. In her recent interviews after she’s become a mom though, it felt like she more management level now, more willing to fight.

  3. Miriam had rivalry shes always had been a Thai Sui goo por. …she don’t like a kinda of type to have prbs with other artist!!! I guest once ur in the entertainment industries there tend to be a few that don’t cross path easily well I guest that life

  4. Rival? What rival? She never had a patch on Joey. Not a fan of either but Joey has dominated and is still dominating HK music industry. What other HK female artist comes close to her in both singing and dancing? I can’t think of one. Even Sammi at the height of her career was no where near as good as Joey today. Ok, sounding like a fan, I’ll stop.

    1. Are you kidding me? Sammi is more popular and well known, even outside HK.

    2. I do agree Joey’s voice is good but that’s as far as it goes. Her dancing good? Are you kidding yourself. Mostly uncoordinated movements with her back-up dancers. That’s not impressive considering she is so long in the industry. Some how her dancing is not in tandem with her singing. There are many good singers in HK but unfortunately there are few who can sing & dance well except Aaron because he started off as a back-up dancer. As for Miriam & Sammi, their time are over & should just retire gracefully while passing the torch to the younger & fresher female singers. Over 40 & a mother – sounds stale even for male artistes.

    3. I’m not talking about being well known, i’m talking Joey purely as an artist in the music industry. Sammi is probably well known outside of HK because she made a lot more movies in HK and those movies are shown internationally.

As for the dancing, being uncoordinated from your backup dancers doesn’t mean you can’t dance. If she had no backup dancers and was dancing on her own then she would not be uncoordinated. But my point is, she can sing live and dance at the same time. How many artist in HK can do that? How many female artist in HK can dance to a fast beat song, sing live and still sound acceptable?

But the final point is, Miriam was never a rival to Joey. The only thing Miriam would probably oust Joey is her acting skills but I find her annoying in movies. But then, Joey can’t act.
