Kay Tse, Hins Cheung are Top Winners at Ultimate Song Chart Awards 2014
Hosted by CRHK’s Ultimate 903, the 27th Ultimate Song Chart Awards was held on January 1, 2015. The winners were determined through popular vote and radio airplay. A total of 43 music awards were handed out to singers, musicians, and producers who dominated local music charts in 2014.
There were a few surprise recipients at this year’s awards ceremony. Kay Tse (謝安琪) was shaky when she received the My Favorite Female Singer award, one of the biggest prizes of the night. In her speech, she gave words of encouragement to Hong Kong’s dwindling music industry, “Many singers tonight have talked about the hardships and low points in their lives. I want to say that our music industry is at a difficult place. [We] need to stay strong and have [passion]. We need to support this fire together. I’ve rarely made it to the peaks of my life, but thank you everyone for giving me the strength to continue. Thank you everyone for giving me a chance and listening to my music.”
Hins Cheung (張敬軒), who won My Favorite Male Singer, said, “I never thought about winning this award this year. This [award] is what I’ve been chasing for all these years. Tonight, I managed to stand on stage to grab the light. My work and my life have given me light in the dark.”
One of the most heartwarming wins of the night went to Pakho Chau (周柏豪), who defeated veteran singers Andy Hui (許志安) and Eason Chan (陳奕迅) in the Best Male Singer category, winning Gold. Pakho cried when he won the award and said, “I feel a little dizzy. I’ve made many dreams in the past eight years, and I know the road will be even harder to walk on in the future. I will do better.” Andy, who won Silver, said, “Hong Kong needs awards ceremonies. Singers need your recognition.” Eason, who won Bronze, was absent at the ceremony.
Miriam Yeung (楊千嬅) was very emotional when she won Gold in the Best Female Singer category. Her last Golden win was in 2004. Miriam could not control her emotions and cried. She was very surprised to win the award again ten years later and that “everything [was] absurd.” Miriam said it was not easy to be a working mother, and thanked her family for giving her the strength to continue her career.
Joey Yung (容祖兒) won Silver and Fiona Sit (薛凱琪) won Bronze. Fiona cried when she received her award. Expressing that it has been over ten years since her debut, she said, “When you’re in your first two years, standing on this stage is easy. But after that, we must cherish each opportunity.”
In regards to the top ten most recommended songs of the year, first-time nominees Charmaine Fong’s (方皓玟) “Always Breaking Up in Rainy Days” <分手總約在雨天> and Phil Lam’s (林奕匡) “Peaks and Valleys” <高山低谷> snagged ninth and tenth place respectively. Both cried when they received their awards.
Hacken Lee’s (李克勤) ballad single “No Friends” <無朋友> won eighth place. Hacken was overjoyed when he received his award. Expressing that he has met many new singers in the industry, Hacken said, “Hello, everyone. I am Hacken Lee. Maybe your parents like to listen to my music, but no matter what generation or age, it is a very happy thing to see your song winning top ten.”

I see an end coming soon in the HK music industry. Most of the young singers now are forgettable. Gone were the days like the four heavenly kings, Anita Mui, the legendary Leslie Cheung…
Alfred hui
Jinny ng
Fred cheng
Hubert wu
Linda chung
Grace wong
Raymond lam
Kay tse
Chi lam
They’re all good singers
Linda Chung…. got to be joking, right?
Not Linda, Grace, Jinny, Raymond Lam to an extent( he needs a distinct music style that belongs to him). Sorry, I dont usually comment but those girls you listed are not musicians. They are only idols who will not be a long lasting singer.
You must be kidding yourself to come out with this list. Lmao!!!
HK music industry is in a sad state. Can’t tell which current young singer is capable to have concert in the HK colliseum. Nobody has that kind of standard anymore.
OMG. I like Hins Cheung, he’s talented and not arrogant like some undeserving winners past and present. But why does he dress himself like that, a creepy or freaky new look each time? I get that artists want to express their individuality, but most of the time they look like they’re trying too hard.
Daughter says Hins looks like “Prince Charming tripped and slammed into a freshly painted white wall, seriously injuring himself in the process.”
And why does “the lady”, Kay Tse, have a pretty porcelain platter glued to her chest? LOL, looking at pictures through kids eyes!
Classic case of trying too hard to stand out from the crowd and ending up looking like a bunch of clowns attending a Halloween party.
Agree! You really can’t tell the extremity Hins went through to make himself stand out from the crowd just from the picture above. I was on Afspot.net a few minutes ago and saw his entire outfit. Turns out the outfit comes with a grand chandelier looking thing strapped to his left arm ( if my eyes are not playing tricks on me at this time of the day). I mean how bizarre is that? Hauling that heavy metal thing up and down from stage to receive your awards…LMAO. I actually like him in the white outfit ( makes him appear less gloomy) minus the face paint and chandelier looking accessory.
HK music is slowly fading away … it’s sad cause I grew up listening to CPOP especially with the 4 heavenly king era and get to know most of the singer tagging along with these 4 kings but now looking at the industry I hardly can’t name anyone and the style of music has changed so much I can’t barely like any canton song, my car and ipod is jam packed with 80’s and 90’s C-POP hardly anything above 2000’s.
I hope HK singer will stay strong, I might not support it much anymore but I do not hope it dies.
Hong Kong singers are ridiculous when it comes to their performing costume. They are making a monkey of themselves with those silly costumes especially in concerts.
Another exercise in awarding mediocrity. No wonder the HK music industry is in such a sad state.
I think Fred Cheng will bring “new wind” to HK Music Scene.
I kind of picky with music (lyric, melody+voice have to be nice to my hear)
I stopped listening to HK new singer since…2002?2004? because
their singing are bad like average Karaoke singing even on CD Album (don’t even talk about live). My aunt sings Karaoke better than some of HK singers.
But Fred Cheng’s singing is nice, strong and not much breathing sound. He knows music and how to change it himself to his liking.
Fred with his guitar is even better, so natural.
PS: Linda Chung and Raymond Lam (Raymond Drama fan here) should stop singing especially Linda (can’t listen to here singing even one sentence) and they should concentrate on acting.
The HK music industry is seriously dying…
