Miriam Yeung Avoids Former Boss, Leon Lai, Over Work Conflicts
Miriam Yeung (楊千嬅) and Leon Lai (黎明) attended the final night of the “Mark Lui THANK YOU Concert” <雷頌德THANK YOU演唱會> last night, celebrating the works of pop composer Mark Lui (雷頌德). At the event, Miriam was seen actively avoiding former boss Leon, adding fuel to previous rumors about their unhappy work relationship.
Miriam joined Leon Lai’s music label AMusic in 2007, and released several number one hits and earned many music industry awards. Despite her success, reports surfaced that Miriam and Leon had different career visions and frequently feuded over work. In 2010, Miriam decided to not renew her contract at AMusic and instead signed with the newly revived Capital Artists.
After her on-stage performance at Mark Lui’s concert, Miriam quickly returned to her seat and spent the entire night as a member of the audience. She did not even return to the stage to sing with the rest of the guest performers during the finale, possibly to avoid sharing space with her former boss. Miriam appeared at the post-concert celebration back stage after she was informed that Leon was absent.
Leon, a headlining guest at Sunday’s concert, was also the highlight of the evening. He performed the song “Superstar” <明星> on behalf of Mark, who dedicated the performance to his mentor, famed composer and the song’s original lyricist Jim Wong (黃霑). Leon created a light-hearted mood at the concert, teasing Mark whenever he had the opportunity. When Mark referred to Jim Wong as an old man, Leon immediately corrected him. “You spoke wrongly again. Uncle Jim was only 60-something when he left us; he was not an old man. He is our senior. You wouldn’t be happy if someone calls you old if you leave at 60. No matter how old he is, we should respect him and refer to him as our senior….”
Leon then said that he grew up with Jim Wong’s curse words, and jokingly revealed that he is the happiest when listening to Jim Wong curse. Mark joined in with praises, saying that he is learning how to curse like his mentor. Leon immediately asked Mark to practice on stage but Mark declined.
During the finale, Mark presented several photos of friends from his private collection. A photo of Leon holding Mark’s two sons caught reporters’ attention. When asked, Mark said that he decided to share that photo exclusively at the last concert, and it is meant as a thank you to Leon for his support over the years and for his love towards Mark’s two sons. When asked if Leon would make a good father, Mark agreed confidently and shared that Leon’s smile is the sweetest when he is with Mark’s children. When asked if Leon tried to teach his famous “golden phrases” to his sons, Mark quipped. “They’re principles. He is teaching them how to be human.”
