Park Bo-gum and IU in Period Drama “When Life Gives You Tangerines”

Starring popular idols IU and Park Bo-gum, slice-of-life drama When Life Gives You Tangerines has already premiered on Netflix on March 7! Offering a tangy twist on life, the sweeping generational drama traces the lives of its protagonists from 1950s Jeju all the way to present-day Seoul through seven decades, with its high budget of 60 billion won enabling the meticulous construction of sets from different time periods.
Appeal Across Generations
The spirited and rebellious Oh Ae-sun (young version played by IU and adult version played by Moon So-ri) often bullies the quiet Gwan-sik (young version played by Park Bo-gum and adult by Park Hae-joon). A lover of books who dreams of becoming a poet, Ae-sun is unable to attend school due to her poor family background, and spends year after year on the island with the steadfast and diligent Gwan-sik. Their island story blossoms into a tale of setbacks and triumphs, and also shines the light on how parents of every generation would always give their all for their children.
Director Kim Won-seok shared that the series will make viewers laugh and cry, with the humor striking at unexpected moments. Calling When Life Gives You Tangerines a series that will appeal across different generations, he adds, “We dedicate the series to dads and moms from the previous generation, but also hope that youths of today, and those in their thirties and forties will also be able to connect with the drama,”
Script Moves IU and Moon So-Ri
Sharing that it is her second time working with director Kim, actress IU said she was a fan of screenwriter Lim Sang-chun, and agreed to star in the drama within a day, as she loved the script so much. As she has previously worked on commercials with Park Bo-gum, IU spilled that she was “very reliant” on the actor on set, treating him as a good friend even after the cameras stopped rolling. Both actors are already anticipating their next collaboration!
Veteran actress Moon So-ri shared the same sentiments with IU, as she recalls that “This one evoked the most tears among all the scripts I’ve read. When I knew that IU would be playing the younger Ae-sun, I was delighted and surprised.” The seasoned thespian shared that there was no need to harness the emotions required during filming as she was able to get in character rightaway with a huge sense of security, and that she silently hopes for the drama to be renewed so she can continue playing the role of Ae-sun!
