2011 Miss Hong Kong: Second Round of Interviews
The second round of interviews for the 39th Annual Miss Hong Kong Pageant was held. The candidates who were invited to come back for the second interview included: “Small-Chest Chrissie Chau,” Lau Ka Lai, “MK Ka Yan” Jasmine, “Pure Jolin Tsai” Chu Sun Lai, “Big-Belly Celine Ma” So Wai Yan, “Strange Chest Woman” and the 2010 First Runner-up Miss Chinese Sydney, Ho Cheuk Man. A candidate who was caught smoking at the first round of interviews was ousted from the second interview process.
Since the applicants’ photos were revealed by the media, netizens have provided the background details of the women. Allegedly, 17-year-old Lau Ka Lai (劉家麗changed her name and may have received plastic surgery. At one point, Ka Lai had signed under Charles Chan’s Snazz Music Ltd. Netizens even claimed that Ka Lai had lied about her educational background, claiming that she did not graduate from Form 3. Ka Lai was interested in becoming an actress and after two months in Form 3, she dropped out of school. Allegedly the “Small-Chest Chrissie Chau” came from a wealthy background and her family lived in Celestial Heights, Ho Man Tin. After the second interview with TVB yesterday, Ka Lai took a taxi to the Ho Man Tin area. Other rumors claimed that Ka Lai was borrowed a friend’s Ho Man Tin address to register for the competition and that her family lived in Tuen Mun public housing. Due to application in the Miss Hong Kong Pageant, Ka Lai recently rented an apartment several hundred square feet in size. Allegedly Ka Lai’s contract with Snazz Music will not expire until November 2011.
The press’ favorite candidates included “Pure Jolin Tsai” Chu Sun Lai (朱晨麗)who revealed her sexy side in a short black patterned dress, gray blazer, and black stockings to the second interview. Born in China, Sun Lai competed and lost in the 2006 Miss Asia online pageant. Studying ballet since she was a young girl, Sun Lai won aaward postgraduate scholarship to study ballet at the John F. Kennedy Center for Performing Arts in the United States. Sun Lai had performed in the Hong Kong Ballet troupe.
“MK Ka Yan” Jasmine [who appeared in a black dress]. Perhaps due to stress, impurities cropped up on Jasmine’s face. Allegedly, model Jasmine frequented nightclubs to meet men. Another press favorite was “Hong Kong Kelly Lin,” who wore a yellow dress at the second interview. Both her attire and features made her stand out among the other applicants.
Dark horse candidates included “Strange Chest Woman” [who wore a dark blue floral dress]. Although her former “watermelon” cup size was now strangely a “basketball” size, the judges allowed “Strange Chest Woman” in the second interview. “Big Belly Celine Ma” So Wai Yan (蘇慧恩removed the sunglasses that she wore at the first round of interviews and appeared in a purple dress. Wai Yan had competed in The Voice <超級巨聲>in 2009.

Jayne: I find “Hong Kong Kelly Lin,” the woman in the yellow dress pretty. “Pure Jolin Tsai” Chu Sun Lai has nice features, but she looked so tired in the photo! These women will look better with new hairstyles and make-up.
Can’t each applicant be considered on their own merits instead of always being compared to existing celebrities?
I find it irritating that such comparisons imply: these celebrities are either all beautiful (not!!! eg. Chrissie Chau’s very mediocre and Jolin Tsai downright unattractive), or are more beautiful than the applicant look-alike; these applicants only have some sort of acceptable status if they look like someone else.
I suppose there will be comparisons because everyone wants an identifiable face to feel some sort of I suppose attachment to that person? Once they establish their own identities then there is no need for such comparisons but the news ones will be compared to these who have set standards. Actually it is a compliment to be compared favourably to famous twins so to speak. They must start somewhere.
not much to compare, but could see a big gap in beauty between miss HK with the iCancy Korean supermodels, lol
I remember reading the recent articles about one of the contestant looking like Myolie and labelled her as the “pirated myolie wu”.Jayne,do you know which contestant there’re referring to?
Did she went through round 1? I think her mouth look like Myolie
MacD,
I’m not sure which candidate you’re referring to that looking like Myolie. Is it the girl with the sunglasses in the first round of interviews? She made it to the second round.
I think decisions for the final selection of the candidates will be made soon and they’ll hold a press conference where all the final candidates will be revamped with new hairstyles, so we’ll get to see.
LOl letting strange chest woman into second round. Why? so they can continue to make fun of her?
Cinsin,
Since it’s a beauty pageant, having a voluptous figure and decent face usually means final admission. I wouldn’t be surprised that she will make it into the competition.
It’s the press that’s cruel in their description of the candidates, which should not affect TVB’s selection criteria.
so apparently the girl in the first pic is only 17? wow that’s quite young to participate in Miss Hong Kong imo. The fifth picture of the girl in the black dress looks so stern lol She should cheer up a bit on the fact that she made the second round (:
Isn’t 18 the youngest? So they accept 17 year olds? With parental consent?
Actually, I don’t think 17 is too young since the entire pageant and show seems like a joke nowadays anyway. It’s merely an entrance exam into TVB and acting. Personally, I feel that they could have more time and experience to nurture their acting skills. Also, twenties are one’s golden years. Therefore, I don’t like TVB’s new policy of increasing the age to 27. If the winner were to be that age, by the time they have finished their duties, they would be 28. It takes a few years for the audience to know them. Before you know it, their youth is gone.
Actresses like Linda who entered at age 20 has this opportunity. Mandy Wong entered when she was 24 and TVB still isn’t promoting her as much as others. I hope they will before it’s too late.
@Funn, They’ve always accepted 17 year olds. It would be more appropriate if they never increased the max age to 27. 25 seems decent enough.
The girl (I assume is Lau Ka Lai) looks prettier in the before picture than after.
Her after picture looks like Tracy Ip.
where are all the beautiful girls in HK? are they busy studying 🙂 almost all the hot girls comes back from Canada to HK nowadays…
All lining up in some dingy Korean plastic surgeon’s office ready for transformation, or they aren’t as ambitious.
I am kinda disillusioned a bit these days. No one is true beauty anymore. I feel these HK pageants should ask all of them to remove all make up, hair extension, mascara, padded bras, etc for 1st audition. Anyone under such heavy make up or expert make up or hair extension would look gorgeous.
Yeah agree. But removing their makeup and fake extensions in live TV is not an good idea since TVB can be prosectuted for scaring HK citizens to death like a horror movie 🙂
“Anyone under such heavy make up or expert make up or hair extension would look gorgeous.”
But if your claim is true and that make up does wonders, then I cannot imagine how these girls will look like without make up. The majority of them aren’t attractive at all. I can only spot two that are a bit above average and yet that’s partly because their outfits and hair were put together.
Come on, they’re young. Youth must be a plus point?? Some I do see coming with minimal make up, which is I suppose a sign of confidence?
Some do look stern though and older than their actual age. I suppose that’s why so many make up to soften their eyes, to make them look less bitchy?
i wonder how may of them have already have some work done on their face before entering the competition.
Doubt it. This is not like Korea where they plan way ahead. Again I believe youth, make up helps.
At this point, my favorite is Chu Lai Sun. While she’s not gorgeous, she’s presentable and she’s the best dressed. Nice choice in attires.
And it wasn’t a pleasant sight to see the girl with acne on her feet. Ew.
The girl in the white dress (on the header photo) also looks nice. The girl in the yellow dress seems humble and sweet as well.
What is the girl with glasses in a plain white T-shirt and jeans doing here? She seems to have nice skin, but her features make her look so old and unattractive.
Chriselle,
Agree on the comment regarding the woman with acne on her feet. Why didn’t she have the good sense to wear shoes that would cover it up, such as black pumps with black stockings?
Chu Sun Lai has pleasant features and her ballet background will earn her a lot of points in the talent portion. Her eyes look a little tired and I suspect she may be one of the older candidates.
Looks more like mosquito bites or a skin rash than acne. ew, anyway.
One of my college acquaintances was placed in the Miss New York Chinatown pageant. If I had the physical qualifications, I wouldn’t mind competing in a beauty pageant. Just learning professional make-up, skincare, and fitness routines is worth it! It is like a crash-course self-improvement program.
When asked why many candidates enter the beauty pageant, the standard reply is “wanting new challenges.” My answer would be self-improvement. The vigorous 2 month training seems to really work in turning around the women physically.
IMO, the best time to enter a beauty pageant is right after college graduation. Not many employers are willing to let women take 2 months of vacation for the competition.
Not world peace?
Lol your comment just reminded me of the movie Miss Congeniality
I only have two things to say: 1. why would you wear glasses? 2. why would you show your feet if your feet look like that?
Yep, definitely not a smart move for the girl that was showing those mosquito bites on her feet or whatever they were. Not attractive at all. And yes, the girl with short hair in glasses and white t-shirt and jeans looks like she is not even trying.
These girls are overall average looking at best, but I’m sure their transformation would help a bit. My fave is still the girl that is wearing the yellow dress and was wearing the hot pink dress in the first rounds. The media hasn’t digged up her past yet, so hopefully with good press and image, this will help her. Chu Sun Lai looks okay as well. So far, those are the only 2 that might have a chance.
I should totally start working out now and try out the pageant next year LOL
jayne looks better than some of these contestants
Ekinfan,
thank you for the compliment! I look like Chinese Mariah Carey (face only) with full cheeks and smaller eyes.
The batch of contestants are ok, just no stunning beauties.
Well Jayne maybe I can be your hero cause we belong together and then maybe you can Tuts My Barreh.
Ekinfan,
My type is more Wayne Lai, older, mature, introspective, responsible, someone with inner substance, family man etc.
Haha, I think Funn declared her love for you once!
How does Ekinfan know what Jayne look like? Oh, is there a picture somewhere??
Iampheng,
Nope there is no photo… Ekinfan must be impressed by my inner beauty and presumed my outer beauty matches in intensity. 🙂
I am beginning to be rather impressed with Ekinfan.
I think I did didn’t I? declare my love for Ekinfan!!
Anyway Jayne, no need pictures. Sometimes words alone are enough for me to form a mental picture and I can say you’re the supermodel of bloggers.
Wait!! Mariah Carey? I hope your taste in dress is not 10 sizes too small also like Mariah Carey??
Who by the way had probably history’s longest pregnancy. The way she went on and on and on in pregnant state… never knew she lasted this long with her current husband! Anyway Off Topic!
“Sometimes words alone are enough for me to form a mental picture and I can say you’re the supermodel of bloggers.”
I concur! 😀
Funn,
On your site many years ago, you blogged about a tool to match your face to celebrity face. That’s how I came up with Mariah Carey; but in truth, only my face shape with puffy cheeks and smile resembles her. I was a bookworm while in school and my personal style is more nerdy librarian in real life. 🙂
sorry to say but they are all not pretty.
I think the one in yellow dress is pretty.
Miss HK 2010 wasn’t pretty, but Miss HK 2009, Sandy Lau, is really pretty! I’m currently watching her in Show Me the Happy
Does Jayne have a picture of herself somewhere i can see? I want to see this Jayne that i have tuned in for many years!
I have often wondered whether beauty is universal or subjective to the ‘eye of the beholder’. Over the years as I have seen hundreds of beauty pageants literally across the globe, I have come to realize that beauty is truly in the eyes of beholder. But the same phenomenon happens everywhere, beauty pageant participants are always a subject of critique in their respective countries everywhere; ‘too thin/fat’, ‘too plain’, ‘too ugly’ in their local tabloids.
In northern Europe, they are usually complained of being too thin even though standing next any miss HK participant, she will look like an amazon. They also prefer natural beauties; they print these ladies without make-up on the mags too. These women are not afraid of being photographed without make-up and show the whole glory of a natural face.
On a final note, let’s face it these miss HK delegates ain’t exactly Victoria Secret models material but in my humble opinion they are better than your average HK gals on the street. So they are beautiful in their own right.
I would ‘like’ your comment if i could 🙂 What exactly is a ‘true beauty’? I think everyone can be beautiful in their own way… There are people who when I first meet, I think they are very pretty.. but get more plain as I see them. Then there are other people who when I first meet think they are plain, but over time they get prettier and prettier.. who knows?
