2013 Miss Hong Kong Pageant: Second Round Interviews
The selection process for the 2013 Miss Hong Kong pageant is currently underway. After the first round interviews last week, TVB narrowed down its candidates, inviting roughly 60 back for second round interviews today. Top favorites Virginir Lau (劉溫馨), Karen Lam (林芷嘉), and Sisley returned as expected, though Jenny, a Laurinda Ho (何超蓮) lookalike, was nowhere to be seen.
TVB executive Tsang Sing Ming (曾醒明) explained that several candidates did not wish to appear in newspapers, so the company arranged for them to attend the interview without first meeting the press. Regarding earlier reports that the candidates were required to have their chests examined, Tsang explained that the staff was making sure that the contestants’ swimwear was not enhanced per pageant rules. Tsang added that the 16 to 18 finalists selected will be announced in early July.
The Miss Hong Kong Pageant hopefuls spoke once again to reporters at the second round interview. Peggy, who reminded reporters of Taiwanese singer Cyndi Wang (王心凌), was one of the stand-outs today. Peggy appeared in a light pink top with a pink bow at the chest, and completed the outfit with a simple tan skirt. Reporters teased Peggy about her more conservative outfit, telling her that other candidates dressed to show off their cleavages. Peggy replied with a smile, “I don’t know the length of my ‘career line’; I’ve never have it measured.”
Karen Lam, nicknamed “Busty Cecilia Cheung”, kept an active Facebook account with various sexy and revealing photos of her and her friends. She also knew quite a few artists in the entertainment industry, including Michael Miu (苗僑偉) and Fanny Sit (薛芷倫). Many noted her frequent use of colored lenses in her online photos, but Karen seemed confident in her chances even without the cosmetic enhancements. “I do not have heavy makeup on. I also didn’t wear colored contact lenses or fake eyelashes [today]. I am confident with my looks even without makeup.” When asked about her bikini party pictures, Karen defended her lifestyle and vowed to keep her Facebook profile active. “I am being myself. I will not purposely hide anything. Of course, I will be wearing a swimsuit at the beach…I don’t think it is unreasonable.”
Virginir Lau, who resembles previous Miss Hong Kong second runner-up, Tracy Chu (朱千雪), suffered from a wardrobe malfunction last week. Successfully entering the second rounds, Virginir opted for a more conservative yellow jumper set. She also refused to respond to the wardrobe incident and appeared flustered when she walked past her car when being chased by the paparazzi. Virginir almost boarded the wrong bus, but a helpful reporter alerted her in Mandarin, to which she replied “Really?” in accented Cantonese. Although she did not speak much, Virginir mentioned that she was born in Hong Kong.
“Sexy BB” Karena Ng (吳千語)-lookalike Sisley wore a dark silver top and a black skirt, showing off her slim legs. During the first round interviews, Sisley was seen wearing a black see-through top showing her bra. She shared that she only applied mascara and was without makeup otherwise. There also appears to be a bruise on her left arm that was not previously present. When asked about a private photo where she appeared intimate with her boyfriend in Germany, Sisley said, “That is already in the past. I am not dating at the moment.” When asked if she has gained confidence since being marked as one of the most popular candidates, Sisley said that being popular is not always a good thing.
Several other candidates also caught the media’s attention today. Twenty-four year old Xenia wowed reporters in a short one piece dress, showing off her full curves. Xenia was the last contestant to arrive at the shuttle stop, though she stopped for press interviews anyway and was eventually rushed by TVB staff.
Rika Lau (劉燕妮) also made the news due to her impressive academic credentials. She revealed that she had studied at the University of Cambridge in England and is currently majoring in law. She shared that she is studying law only out of interest and has no intention to become a lawyer.
Nineteen-year-old Acca wore a light green dress and showcased her sweet smile. However, she refused to reveal her last name with the excuse that she did not want friends to recognize her.

I don’t get how sisley is regarded as a Karena Ng lookalike and is a standout. She does not resembles karena at all and she looks like an ordinary girl I see on the streets. I’m sure many commentators from this site are more attractive than her.
939393,
Actually, I like Sisley. She’s quite pretty in the above video clip and has a nice smile. She’s pretty without trying too hard and has nice skin without caking a lot of makeup, although she comes across as tomboyish. She looks like a clean-scrubbed college student without a lot of frills, not a typical pageant applicant.
Looks like both of us have contrasting views. To me, she looks somewhat messy with her oily skin, unkept bun and her choice of clothing which in turn gives me an impression that she possesses a “I-dont-care” attitude. she is also quite hunched. Yeah, not your typical pageant contestant for sure maybe that’s why she’s a standout? But is this what we expect and look for in beauty queens? I hope not.
939393,
I agree that Sisley’s style can be improved, which should be the case after the pageant stylists work on her. However, beneath the somewhat unkempt hair and oily skin (which a lot of the candidates have the same issue due to the heat), I see a pretty girl. Maybe a little plain in packaging, but still attractive.
@Jayne: There you said it. There are so many noticeable flaws in terms of her appearance (and maybe personality?). Which is why i do not comprehend how she’s regarded as a standout.
Sisley is just average in terms of look, her biggest flaw is her body language. Hunched, shifting while answering questions.
Karen seems media savvy but she need to tone down her coyness, and reveal less info abt herself. I like how poised Virginir , she have this MHK look – her accent would be her biggest hurdle I guess.
I agree with @Jayne Sisley is pretty without lot of makeup though..
Above pix Viginir has one eye bigger than the other one..a not balance eyelids
Sisley looks like a nice and clean girl. She has a sweet smile, but I think getting braces would be a good idea.
Most of those girls probbaly look like the average girl on the street under all that make up though. Sisley is probably the only one not wearing layers of foundation, primer, powder, and did not spend hours prepping for this. Props for that. from the video, she has pretty features. Karen on the other hand, seems to resemble a man even with all that make up and cleavage revealing outfit. Kinda looks like joel chan
Props for being the one who puts in the least effort? there’s something seriously wrong here. It’s like giving scholarship to someone who has gotten average results after putting the least effort as compared to those who has gotten better results after putting in more effort.
I believe everyone has seen those photos of girls tranformed by make up. They put in a lot of effort. You want girls who put in most effort? I guess ling luan nini should join MHK.
If you reread my comment, i said that results matter too. And those who put in effort in their makeup made themselves more presentable, which is also a form of respect to the organizers.
If makeup is that important, then I guess this is a makeup contest NOT a beauty contest. Beauty is about your natural looks, not how much make up you have on, or how much plastic surgery you’ve done.
@939393, your analogy is very weak. how can you relate it to putting effort into a scholarship? putting so much makeup on should be equated to cheating to get a scholarship, NOT putting in effort.
the next MHK will be a role model for the next generation of children, if we praise those who put on a lot of makeup, then we are encouraging the next generation to mainly focus on appearance, instead of inner beauty. we should not teach them that makeup=effort. as much as i acknowledge that this is a very materialistic world, we should try to change this altitude and return to past MHK, where we actually focus on natural and inner beauty (this includes being able to show your true self, not covering it up with large amounts of make-up). those who put so much make-up on, are selfish people who are desperate to WIN, and neglect how their actions are negatively affecting the society in particular the next generation.
@green eggs and ham,
Agreed, and eliminate any candidate who has had plastic surgery.
Didn’t the pageant from last year have a part where the contestants did not a lot of make up?? They did have a bit of it on, so were not completely barefaced but not as much as usual. I don’t know if you guys remember but most of them did not look great at all and some even looked a bit scary… Boy, I wonder how they would all live without make up?
I think the one in the light blue dress will win
The girl in the yellow dressed seems poised.
Ah… so she is Virginir Lau.
my picks: girls in yellow, aqua, white (sleeves) dresses
i like sisley girl
My pick are Sisley and Virginir. In my opinion, Sisley looks pretty in the video clip and has a nice smile and Virginir looks pretty too and an attractive look. Both of them have a long lasting pretty look.
None of these girls look that spectacular. But if you don’t have much to choose from I guess it comes down to who looks better and have the most personality among them all.
Girl in yellow dress and girl in light blue dress.
I like how confident Karen Lam looks. She doesn’t look like the “nice type” though haha. This year’s contestants are much better than last year’s though.
I like Virginir Lau. She looks very classy and confident. Sisley needs to work on her body language.
Why is it that the quality of contestants gets worse every year. Most of the them should save themselves the embarrassment and find a mirror. Its more like a pork chop contest. There is no point even to bother pretending that they have looks and brains any more. Change the whole contest to being the next tvb wannabe fadan and save the hassle of miss universe participation
