329 TVB Artists Gather for 45th Anniversary Promotion
On July 17th, 329 TVB artists gathered together to film a 2013 calendar photoshoot and promotional trailers for the television station’s 45th anniversary. TVB high executives including major stakeholder Charles Chan (陳國強) and Deputy Chairman Norman Leung (梁乃鵬), also attended the photo shoot.
Myolie Wu Secures Position as #1 Sister
The standing position of TVB artists has always indicated their status within the company. Standing near the center of the first row, Myolie Wu (胡杏兒) has successfully secured her position as TVB’s #1 sister. Regarding her position, Myolie laughed and said, “At least I get to join the party!” She added, “I’m very happy today! I get paid to do this. Unity is strength! I like it when the company organizes such grand gatherings.”
Myolie also clarified that Carol Cheng and Liza Wang are the company’s real #1 sisters.
Selena Li Rises to the Top
Standing in the first row between Ruco Chan (陳展鵬) and Raymond Wong (黃浩然), Selena Li’s (李詩韻) status in the company is noticeably more prominent than before. Regarding her rising status, Selena happily said, “I’m so happy I get to stand in the front row!” When asked if Selena wants to win an award this year, she said, “I’ve been nominated for many years. Hopefully I’ll get a chance to win an award this year.”
Jason Chan and Rebecca Zhu Advance
Jason Chan (陳智燊) joined TVB in 2006, and was cast into his first major role in 2011’s Be Home for Dinner <誰家灶頭無煙火>. He is currently starring opposite Linda Chung (鍾嘉欣) in the upcoming TVB drama Blissful Ferris Wheel <幸福摩天輪>. Standing next to Kate Tsui (徐子珊), this year is Jason Chan’s first year in the front row.
Rebecca Zhu (朱晨麗) successfully joined the show business after being crowned Miss Hong Kong 2011. Her first acting effort was in the 2011 crime drama film Turning Point 2 <Laughing Gor之潛罪犯>, portraying Francis Ng’s (吳鎮宇) girlfriend.
Rebecca soon replaced Fala Chen’s (陳法拉) role in the upcoming TVB grand production, Silver Spoon, Sterling Shackles <名媛望族>, and is currently signed on for a major appearance in Triumph in the Skies 2 <衝上雲宵2>. For this year’s anniversary celebration, Rebecca stands next to Ben Wong (黃智賢 ) in the second row. Rebecca is followed by Christine Kuo (苟芸慧), Edwin Siu (蕭正楠), Elena Kong (江美儀), Shirley Yeung (楊思琦), Patrick Tang (鄧健泓), and Kaki Leung(梁嘉琪).
Joey Meng and Alice Chan Join the Company
Currently filming for TVB’s comedy Cousin, You are Good <老表，你好嘢> with Roger Kwok (郭晉安) and Wong Cho Lam (王祖藍), former ATV actress Joey Meng (萬綺雯) announced earlier that she plans to film another 30-episode grand production for TVB. She is currently standing in the second row, after Pierre Ngo (敖嘉年), Nancy Wu (胡定欣), Mandy Wong (黃智雯), Lai Lok Yi (黎諾懿), and Natalie Tong (唐詩詠). Standing after Joey are Sire Ma (馬賽) and Kitty Yuen (阮小儀).
Unlike her ATV friends, Elena Kong (江美儀) and Joey Meng, who are standing in the second row, Alice Chan (陳煒) is currently standing in the third row, next to Eddie Kwan (關禮傑). When asked if she felt neglected by TVB, Alice said, “Nope! I have a lot of jobs!”
Joey admitted that she had met TVB’s boss Charles Chan, but she never requested to be put in the second row. She responded, “That’s not my style!” Asked if her goal is to stand in the first row, Joey immediately said, “I never thought that far! I’m realistic!”
TVB Lacks Starpower?
In the last few years, many TVB stars left Hong Kong to target the mainland Chinese market, resulting in TVB finding ways to scrounge for new faces. Many of TVB’s previous “second-line” artists, such as Ruco Chan, Selena Li, Jason Chan, and King Kong, have now advanced to the first row.
Sandy Yu’s (余詠珊) favorites, such as Kaki Leung and Priscilla Wong (黃翠如), have also received special attention. Kaki stands in the second row, while Priscilla, the lead actress in TVB’s upcoming drama, Heart Road GPS <心路GPS>, is standing in the center of the fifth row.

As with previous years, Liza Wang (汪明荃), Carol Cheng (鄭裕玲), Eric Tsang (曾志偉), and Nat Chan (陳百祥) are secured in the center of the first row. Eric Tsang is followed by Moses Chan (陳豪), Myolie Wu (胡杏兒), Raymond Lam (林峯), Fala Chen (陳法拉), Michael Tse (謝天華), Linda Chung (鍾嘉欣),Ron Ng (吳卓羲), Kate Tsui (徐子珊), and Jason Chan (陳智燊).

well chris is actually doing pretty well in his sitcom, even though i dont think a lot of people watch it LOL. sitcoms never get high viewership. i do agree that oscar, himhim, and vincent are better than jason. his acting is quite mediocre and i really don’t think he’s good looking at all lol

Indeed, the standing positions do indicate their statuses at TVB. Quite shocking at a few. Jason and King Kong were in the front row, but other siu sangs and fadans were absent. So, both were bumped to the front.
Rebecca Zhu and Priscilla Wong are not deserving of 2nd row. Is Alice Chan filming another series after JA? It seems like she’s not as promoted as Joey Meng.

It would seem nowadays to get front row is just potential and not really big brother material or success. I am disappointed. And looking at the ones they do intend to promote, I fear for TVB.
If Lydia Shum was alive she would have been the one in the absolute middle between Liza and Dodo.
TVB is now promoting her artistes at a random …… no solid promotion as done in Stephen Chan’s days. A typical example: Chan Chin Pang who has been given to act some funny and silly 1st lead roles, paired up with some newly recruited actresses (such as Priscilla Wong), in some small productions. It is harder to get famous in small productions.
The tails of the front row are the potential candidates, imo.
But the middle has not really changed much. Myolie has risen to 1st sister (of younger actresses) but that’s because Charmaine left. There are of minor rotations every year in the first row, but it’s the same people moving closer or further from the middle.

I think the departure of Charmaine Sheh is best appreciated by Myolie Wu. Myolie will not be able to move up to TVB # 1 sister’s position if Charmaine is still with TVB. Moreover, there is no way that Myolie could get her Best Actress Award last year if Charmaine was still a management-contract artiste with TVB. Myolie Wu is TVB # 1 sister just because of her seniority, not because of her super acting skills.
It’s certainly a strong indication of quality of the female leads 🙂

When Charmaine was asked to extend her TVB contract circa 2009 – 2010, she asked for a longer time for consideration. This has already raised red flag for TVB and they proceeded to elevate the ranks of Myolie Wu as the next 1st sister, along with a team of fadan they dubbed as 5 beauties. Can’t remember who is in this group already. Fala? Kate? Anyway they need a leading actress icon.
TVB didn’t give the award to Myolie (as in rigged), but they certainly increases her chance by mapping out her series in prime slots and giving major publicity.
You are right. Charmaine did not have any big productions in 2011 because she did not want to extend her management contract right away. Because of her hesitation, TVB decided not to put all the focus on her after 2009-2010.

I do not necessarily think Myolie wouldn’t have won anyway, since I don’t think Charmaine had a good chance with her shows. Myolie winning a BA award one year is not an indication of anything. However, Charmaine left so there was an empty slot which obviously needed to be filled. It’s to bad it had to be Myolie… but that’s just an indication of TVB’s quality nowadays.

I feel so sorry for Alice Chan, and Joey Meng perhaps. But at least Joey can still lead a series while Alice also plays supporting roles.
This is because their series has yet to finish filming to prove their capability as TVB leading actress. They might have been leading actresses in previous ATV series, but popularity wise is still beneath the current batch of TVB fans.
I like Joey and enjoyed My Date with a Vampire immensely. But I have to admit that her acting was not really good, she wasn’t criticized because the other leading actress Kristy Yang has far more horrible acting.
I’m not really sure in what capacity they have joined. If they have not signed long-term management contracts, then unless your name is Sheren Tang, you don’t really have much power. However, if their shows are successful, they will undoubtedly receive a higher status. It’s fair enough, I think to let them prove themselves. It was much worse in the past, when TVB didn’t even let you do that.

Fala Chen has a higher status than Linda Chung in TVB, as reflected in the above photos, and Michael Tse has a higher status than Ron Ng.
Well, MT surpassing Ron is hardly a surprise, but Fala over Linda kinda is. Then again, I think TVB have toned down the promotion of Linda in recent years – perhaps to focus on Fala so this might be a reflection of it. However, unless Fala proves herself – e.g. with her album, I think there could quickly be a switch in their positions.

I think Fala’s prominence is due to her involvement in “Triumph in the Skies 2.” Actually the push for Fala over Linda already started last year, when Fala was set up as the main competitor against Myolie at last year’s TVB Anniversary.
I also sense that Fala advocates for herself stronger than Linda does, due to their personality differences.
The TVB artists are respective chess pieces for the company. There are key pieces, pieces of equal value. Depending on the productions on hand, pieces are utilized in different ways.
After Linda’s immense success in “Heart of Greed” and “Moonlight Resonance,” TVB has slowed down her promotion because they wish to develop chess pieces of equal value as Linda. So Fala has risen in ranks. They have different images, so I do not see them as in direct competition with each other.
I also have a feeling the Linda isn’t really all that interested in the hooplah surrounding the TVB awards or status. As mentioned in an article on this sight she already has saved a lot of money, is able to help her family at home, and is living comfortably. She gets a little homesick once in awhile and isn’t sure about the schedule. She sounds like a down to Earth girl who is just earning a living (and doing a good job of it imho 🙂 )

Most of the top 5 new fadans suck in acting anyway. Kate Tsui is not the only one, Myolie Wu is, too, though she got her Best (TV) Actress awards in TVB and Mainland China.
Sheren Tang and Ada Choi will not be included in this group photo. Maybe close to the Anniversary awards ceremony their attendance will be required in order to promote “War & Beauty 2”.
Maybe because they’re not contract artiste? A lot of people missing if not the line up won’t be like that.

Rebecca is heavily promoted because they are lacking artist and she is new. i dont understand why tvb is heavily promoting new actress rather than those that have been with them for like 10 years. thats the reason they all want to leave tvb. they dont give them a chance to stand out and lead a drama.

I couldn’t agree more. But I think it would be the best for them though. They’d get more opportunity and rise higher. TVB could be really stupid sometimes, the artists who can act are pushed to the bottom, and the artists who are just starting up or had won a few awards are pushed to the top.
I must say I’m surprise that Myolie became TVB’s #1 sister. I always thought that Tavia Yeung had that spot after Charmaine left. I understand that being the #1 sister was about seniority or who has wiser experience in acting but to me Myolie doesn’t have the requirement to be the #1 sister. I am very disappoint with the TVB today. Tavia’s acting may not be the best but her reputation had always been more legit than some others. I believe if anyone, it should be tavia who has the right to be TVB’s #1 sister. Her image has never been tainted by scandalous new and if you think Him and Tavia’s news are scandalous than you do not know the definition of a scandal. In all fairness, Myolie’s acting has improve over the years while Tavia’s has somewhat stayed neutral but Tavia has more wisdom and virtues to teach newcomers. I mean, isn’t that what it means to be TVB’s #1 sister. It seems like these day anyone can be a Fa Dan and Sui Sang.
Tavia and Bosco were absent at the event. I’m pretty sure that if Tavia was there, the reports would be different.
If Bosco was there, Jason Chan would probably be in the second row instead.

I don’t know why you are surprised. Tavia fans can wax poetically about their idol over and over again, but the truth was that Myolie was the one who almost won over Charmaine before Charmaine even became 1st sister. So of course, it was always going to be Myolie after Tavia.
I have no idea what you’re talking about with “wisdom” and “virtues”. Being 1st sister has never been about that, and I have no clue why you associate those qualities with Tavia. I don’t mean to say that she doesn’t have them, it’s just not anything she’s especially famous for so I fail to see your argument. If newcomers where to get advice, it would be from veterans, not the likes of Myolie, Tavia, etc. As for scandals, Myolie has hardly been tainted by huge scandals, so how is that only a strength for Tavia?!!

Correct me if I’m wrong but 1st Sister status is not cemented by one successful year, right? Exception, is years of transition, i.e. last year due to Charmaine’s departure. Hence Tavia having one success year does not make her equal or surpassing Myolie. Furthermore, Tavia might have had two hits this year – but Myolie’s high profile show GJ2 has not aired yet, nor is the year even over so I think it’s a bit premature to say Tavia’s dramas were better received than Myolie’s. Whether Tavia has enough credit to be 1st Sister together with Myolie is determined by TVB and not because you or I deem so.

And yes, Myolie still has GJ2, but Tavia also has SSSS, which will most likely be an anniversary drama.

Also – Linda has more years of experience than Fala, but Fala has surpassed her. You never know what will happen in the future. Maybe Myolie will lose favor and Tavia goes ahead? Or maybe they both lose favor and a random actress surpasses them?

To be accurate, Tavia’s dramas has always been more well received in the present and past. For instant, the series “Beyond the Realm of Conscience” was beyond successful to the point where she went to Mainland to film a series that is the familiar to that role. 2009, 2010, 2011, and 2012 have all had wonderful and spectacular series from Tavia as all her dramas stood high on the viewers rating. While Myolie had one and one role where she became prominent which is from Ghetto Justice. That is the only role of which she was highly acclaimed for. I see no point on how she should be before Tavia. The only reason that can be why Myolie may be before Tavia is because Tavia is not favor by Virginia Lok and that is the only reason as to why.
Myolie almost won the role of the #1 Sister because back then Myolie had a couple of famous dramas and she was considered the first Fa Dan with Charmaine. But while Charmaine to make most of her opportunity and work hard, Myolie made poor decision and chose role that she could not express clearly. Her roles after “To Grow With Love” were disappointment as her acting did not convey her characters at all. Only recently had she shown improvement.
A role of a sister in general is to give advice to their underling and veteran’s role are to give props to the underlings and teach them on how to act. While a sister’s role is to teach them how to get through the hectic world. If that is not what the role job is for than there is no point for this position. “Wisdom” and “virtues” are not of nonsense when it comes to being a #1 sister. I had not once say Myolie had a bad image or what not. Myolie only has rumor about her before made public romance with Bosco. That was all there was to her.
What is War of in-laws? Myolie also had a spin-off Chinese series for it and she is main lead in this one, not like TY who were just a supporting in Hou Gong. TY has how many successful series on hand? Mind you that last year TY has a low rating series called Men with no shadow, lolz. Of course you will say it was the plot and I agree that the plot of MWNS was rather weak, but it is still a TY’s. Her highest rated series last year Blossom also has Myolie and Myolie is the lead, TY is supporting.
Last year which series of TY can compete with Myolie’s GJ? Fala was Myolie’s competitor as LOO has high rating. Or Maggie Cheung & FH3. But TY? With wat? YSSS was only famous for Linda’s crying scene, TRB for Chilam and Myolie, MWNS dun mention of, TOT with Ruco Chan. Which allow TY to have a chance last year. Even in this year, dont know of how SSSS can do but if it’s a flop, TY’s victory can be considered as rigged award as well!

Hahaha mind you that Tavia may be the supporting character but her role was more like by others and actually had a dept to it. Rather Myolie who had know for her “Gwing” face so she was criticize for that face a rather lot. LOL. True last year Tavia didn’t have any good series on hand so really I can not say much because she did not have good series with good plot or cast in some part. But in Ghetto Justice, the only one that shine most and had most news about was Kevin Cheng and Myolie didn’t have a well received credits to herself…

One experience Tavia has is how to hide her personal life. She never let her personal life be a big thing for the paparazzi. I’m not saying Myolie can’t do that but she just does that less I suppose.
And as a matter of fact, no, I didn’t go to anyone fansite to read that info. It was on Asianfanatic where I read a part of the info and that topic was open to everyone so biased people came from different artist. I read another part of that info thanks to Chong Wai-kin. He said he was proud of Tavia’s acting in that series but said nothing of other cast and that other cast involved Myolie.
In this world, there are many actress that make other cast member shine to their potential. Those actress can be considered “saints” if you want but some actresses that does that can be for example, Kate Winslet (if you know who she is). That is just one example of the many. Myolie’s acting is to her all. While Tavia tries to act in comparison to her cast member and make them shine to their full potential. But that is my opinion. So lets leave it at that. Tavia’s nose is something of permanent or unless she wants to fix it with surgery than so be it. So what I am saying is that her nose has nothing to do with her acting. That is nothing more than a person’s choice of facial appearance. @Addy: Kind of. It come after Taichi, when the word Gwing come up. Gwing is a kinda neutral word to express the feeling (like Chok at the beginning as a way of pose), but then linked with Myolie and becomes more negative. It tells that her face looks funny when she cries, not really that her acting is bad. Some ppl exaggerated the work Gwing to be bad acting or bad expressions. It only refers to the way of crying with a square mouth.
But if you see, not only Myolie looks Gwing when crying. Many others also have the same Gwing face. But since it’s used for Myolie at first, she is sticked with it.

It is not only the charisma, acting is super important. Charmaine did not act well when she started, but she worked really hard to improve her acting skills. I think an artiste needs to have some acting talents to excel and Charmaine has acting talents; together with her hard work, she outshines many artistes.

The difference between Myolie and Charmaine.
When Charmaine first debuted, man, her acting was SO bad, and that chicken voice, so the only way she can go is up, so of course she made improvements. How much improvement is a debatable subject.
Myolie on the other hand, does have acting talent, or why will her Yen Yen role won her so much praise? When you are up, you can fall back down or climb higher. Unfortunately, she, and others like Raymond Lam, just stalled in their acting careers, playing the same roles or applying the same formula to roles over and over again. Can she be better? Yes. But does that means she lack talent? No.
Myolie Wu did not act well as Yan Yan. She got praises not because of her acting, it was because of her courage and willingness to gain 30 pounds to act Yan Yan’s character. Because she did not act well in Yan Yan’s character, she lost the Best Actress Award to Charmaine in that year. If her acting was close to Charmaine’s, Myolie would definitely be awarded because of her sacrifice to gain 30 pounds. Not many actresses are willing to do it.
I think Myolie wants to be a good actress, but with her limited talents she has not been able to succeeded yet.

Yen Yen in Golden Faith has a completely different name from Fei Tin in To Grow with Love, and she definitely didn’t gain 30 lbs to play Yen Yen. And she DID win much praise for her acting as Yen Yen.

I would like to ask one question, is your “dun” meant to be “don’t”? Myolie may have improve but her face expression has always been a big “NO!” to my face. I had never intended to say Tavia hasn’t strive for improvement as a matter of fact her upcoming dramas are something I am looking forward to. Her improvement has not been vastly shine through all her latest drama only has On-Call made a big impact of me. A mentor is someone who can teach a person of what to do whether the mentor themselves are the best actor or not. Tavia to me has always been a wiser person then most other. If you notice, she is still famous and loved even though Virginia Lok never liked her. And yes, Virginia had never had a liking to her and so Tavia had to work hard to get her roles and became prominent throughout the years. That I must say is an amazing talent and that she can use it to help the newcomers.
Myolie may not have any scandalous news but her depression news have been quite a news. This is considered a negative news and show that she can’t handle a negativity in her life which shows she is incapable of being the #1 Sister. Though Myolie has been able to have always been clean of her image, I have to say she is not someone who is drama-free in her life. Both her and Tavia have always had a clean image so no use of arguing with me over this. 🙂
Myolie may have been a great actress in Golden Faith but has she had any roles recently that makes many people have an impact from. Ghetto Justice was a great drama with a spectacular cast but her role did not gave me a “wow what an actress” feeling if you understand. It doesn’t matter who had improve first or last, the only thing matters is of the present and Tavia has more acting potential than Myolie in my opinion. Do remember, this is my opinion so no need to argue over this either.
Myolie’s market value is higher due to her taking in everything that is presented to her. While Tavia has been filming non-stop lately so of course, she wasn’t able to participate or accept any offers so of course her market value is lower than others.

I have to say that TY was promoted quite a lot in the past without the acceptance of the fans. She had the first leading role very soon, in 2003 in the series with Deric On. Then in 2004, she also had a leading role in Twins of brother, a grand series of this year. Only after that, she can’t leave impact on the audiences and she was demoted. But in 2007 she once again had leading role and onwards, she always have leading role.

In The Awakening Story, Tavia had a bigger role than Myolie. In Golden Faith, Tavia gets to pair with promoted siu sang Raymond while Myolie gets to be the little sister, but it was Myolie’s acting that win the audience 🙂

620 had never once came to Tavia’s film ceremony and if she did it was only maybe once or twice for other people. While 620 takes pictures with other artists, she never takes her picture with Tavia or were they ever near each other. In Hong Kong, back then there were many reports of 620 having no favor towards Tavia. Tavia was heavily promoted back then but Tavia always had a neutral attitude and never had rumors until recently so her series never had scandals to promote her series while Myolie had her rumors with Bosco to promote some of her series.
Ha Yu is a veteran who apparently cries for not winning…okay then…thanks for the knowledge but I don’t think I ever heard any news of him mentoring others. Mentoring means actually teaching them steps by steps not giving advice once in a while. Myolie on the other hand had a depression moment because she gain weight to film a series but ends up not winning anything. That I find silly, she gave it her all in gaining weight so why is she crying. Not to mention, series after that role of her became so saddening that I gave up on her acting until recently, of course.
Tavia’s black face or white face or yellow face is still nothing more than a face. Making a face is of a facial’s appearance so I never really care about such thing. Haha I love how everyone seems to talk about Tavia’s face or nose.
Actually Tavia always had offers for commercial but she never had time due to her filming nonstop. She has been wanting to rest but drama after drama were delivered to her so she could not refused if you remember the incident from “The Other Truth” where she couldn’t film half the series. Tiredness and stress can take a toll of some people especially since Tavia has always been of a weak person.

She enter TVB acting class due to accompany her friends. Ironically she pass in the audition and tat the time she debut her acting career and slowly climb up. I’ll give her credit for improving her acting, but what she started off with was… hmm… Nor did she improve in recent years after making that leap. Her acting’s nothing to rave about, but she exudes this *confidence* about her that makes her stand out from the crowd. Then again, TVB is slim pickings nowadays so it’s not exactly hard either.
Myolie:
Nothing much to say. We know she’s OTT. She’s better off as a supporting actress as that was the period her skills shined the most.
Tavia:
Amongst the current fadans, her acting has the most promise, but unfortunately she’s been stuck in the most tedious and repetitive roles ever since making her career breakthrough. Either the writers are poor at character development or Tavia simply does not have the skills to flesh out her roles. Or both. Unfortunately, out of the three, I’d say Tavia lacks the most personality/charisma. Possible EQ too.
Final note: I feel sorry for Alice Chan. She may be new to TVB, but she’s certainly no newbie when it comes to acting. Also Aimee needs to get off the first row. Right. This. Second.

Fala’s quit in SSSS was said by Face like that: Fala thought she has a prominent role in SSSS but in fact, TY has a bigger one, so she quit. 3 Weekly echoed it and said that TY requested to have more screentime, then Fala has less. How come it dun have any relationship to TY :P?

About Tavia vs Fala, I believe Fala didn’t film SSSS because of her illness. About the screen time, wasn’t Tavia and Fala co-leading? I remembered reading the premise, and both were heavily important. When Rebecca replaced Fala, only then was Fala’s role reduced to supporting. No way is Rebecca going to have equal screen time as Tavia. Also, for the sequel to TITS, Myolie and Fala are co-leads. So, I doubt Fala would play second fiddle to Tavia when Myolie is ranked the highest. It’s probably not the screen time that made Fala out of SSSS. Of course, it’s just my speculation. I don’t know what happens off-screen.

I think Myolie can act in more types of role than TY and she has the unique way of expressions. However when it comes to tragedy, Myolie’s facial expressions and look is limited and TY won in this. But overall, from 2002, I always value Myolie’s acting in a higher level than TY. Before that I think TY has more stable acting. Means Myolie improved a lot that period and on wards. It’s my opinion.
On the other hand, I like the way Myolie handles with the press than TY. TY sometimes tried too hard to be funny in the interviews.
Why Myolie can teach the newcomer? First to say, she isn’t a ppl who you can’t talk with her. She likes to laugh, to chat and pose with others. She is close to many ppl, too. Second, she is willing to help. Like she advised Mandy. Third, she has abilities to give out advices. Fourth, she has the position.
Then there is no reason to say that she is less helpful to the newcomers than TY.
I also wanna note that in term of education, Myolie is higher than TY :D. But it’s just a minor factor because the knowledge dun come from the books and schools alone. Uhm, Myolie and TY started at the same time (or Myolie is a bit sooner) so their experience in the industry should be same level.

Myolie is more outspoken compared to Tavia who sometime tends to act too funny or not to serious due to her shyness. Tavia always had a close circle of friends she trust to be outspoken with and I like that. Education is important and congrats on Myolie having more education than Tavia. So how does this relates to this topic??? Myolie and Tavia started the same but Myolie had shine towards her character role while Tavia didn’t. But now Tavia made her character come alive while Myolie just act for the act of it. Hence Myolie shows no feeling when it comes to acting. Tavia is always presented with the same role so of course her acting won’t improve immensely but she has shown to shine when she is presented with a role different from others.

In my opinion, Tavia is in general the better actress and is more well-rounded but comedy is her weakest, while Myolie excels in comedy. Tavia had done a variety of roles…naming few I can think of she was elegant and strong in TOB, weak but determined in FTL, silly and sweet in DB. In my own superficial opinion, I also think Tavia was prettier than Myolie when they were younger so it was also a plus watching Tavia. However, Myolie had always been more popular.
Nowadays, Tavia is acting the same mature roles over and over again, and it doesn’t help that her face looks older with the longer nose. I find that Myolie is actually prettier than Tavia these days.
Tavia kind of reminds me of Kenix, pretty girl that can act well and is top 5 fa dan, but somehow is never really popular enough to take Best Actress. Hope Tavia will win one though and for a character that is worth it this year…she will face very strong competition next year.

Although, I don’t like either currently (liked them both more in the past) I still find it ridiculous that there can only be one ‘1st sister’. Even though I like Charmaine, I also didn’t understanding it during her time. In the 90s, were Kenix, Ada, Flora, etc. not all approx. equally powerful? Perhaps, I’m too young to remember, but I just have a hard time understanding why there needs to be one designated “leader” at a time in an entire company of artistes. I also don’t see as much alleged rivalry between the actors. Does anyone make a stint about whether Moses or Roger is the 1st brother?
Charmaine was the #1 Sister because there was no competition at the time. All the former fadans weren’t active with TVB. Even Gigi Lai left entertainment. I remembered Charmaine was only after Gigi Lai until her retirement. So, her only competition left. Sheren came back after , but she’s not a biological daughter. How I see it is Charmaine was the only popular, biological daughter left.

I know why Charmaine was the only one, because at the time of her promoted, no one else was on her level. What I don’t understand is why they are continuing doing it, when I don’t see much difference between Myolie, Tavia, Fala, Linda and Kate. The latter three arrived later, but they were promoted faster and have had same status as Myolie and Tavia for years.

Like Linda, Kate branches out and portrays different characters. In some roles, she’s weak, but in others, she’s quite strong. She was impressive in “Relic of an Emissary” (until her twin took over lol). She was also quite good as Paris in “Lives of Omission.” She was boring, but at least she was more interesting than Madam Jo.
Linda portrays annoying characters, but like I said before, at least she branches out and portray different annoying characters, lol.
Tavia is just boring. She shines more as a supporting actress… still.

Personally I think Fala Chen is the prettiest fadan and has lots of potentials, but she needs to improve her Cantonese more in TVB drama series. Many people in Hong Kong still complain about her Cantonese and accents.
Also, Myolie Wu has to learn how to act her roles in ancient dramas. She seems to do better in modern ones than ancient ones. She acted her role (queen) very badly in “Curse of the Royal Harem”.

Actually, there are quite a few “big brothers” at TVB as opposed to big sister. Moses is one of them.
Undoubtedly, Kate’s the weakest. I absolutely cringed watching her in Relic of an Emissary. Am I the only one who found both her roles in that drama intolerable? (The whole drama itself was loathsome enough anyway.) I think I prefer her in lighter roles, leaning towards comedy. Actually, I liked most of her roles when paired up with Kenneth.
Tavia. I like her, but she needs to get a personality.
Linda… she’s taken on quite a lot of crying roles, but she’s also done some varied ones too. So why do each and every character give me the exact same vibe?
Kate has weak acting but she has the special charisma. Linda has the leading charisma but lack expression. Myolie is exaggerated but she knows where to put the expression. Fala is pretty and purity but lije Linda with plain expression. TY, do tragedy shows and stay far from (1) villain roles and (2) young girls.
myolie can act a wider range of characters. she’s good in serious or comedies, whereas tavia is more the crying type. like an upgrade of linda chung. seriously, her only non-boring role was in btroc

Her role in BTROC was boring. Granted, the script was partly to blame, but surely when it comes to villains, don’t you just love to hate them? Aren’t you just desperate to see their downfall? But with Tavia’s role, I felt nada. She didn’t even exude an ounce of evilness, not even with all that ridiculous eye makeup. Luckily she was paired up with Charmaine, whose role was even MORE boring. (Then again, another example of bad writing/acting. I was never able to root for Charmaine’s character, so I couldn’t care less for all the cr** Tavia threw at her.)
Myolie’s tried out a wider range of characters, but that does not mean she can act a wider range of characters. I like her but she needs to tone down a bit. Tavia’s just been on the boring side and hasn’t branched out much, playing the same old, same old.
Nah. The most boring character was KC’s role. At least Charmaine’s role had some drama with Tavia’s, so there was at least something to watch. KC had nothing. In fact, I don’t think KC even did anything significant except for being Charmaine and Moses’ toy. (Actually, not even. The script still could have went on without KC).
But BTROC was so bad it was fun to watch, if that makes any sense.
IMO, Moses Chan had the most interesting character. Susan Tse as well. It’s a pity that her downfall was so early in the drama.
I wouldn’t say Tavia’s “villain” character as boring… more like, poorly written. Her transition from good to evil really had me going wtf. I don’t even remember how it happened.
Tavia’s performance was also very bland. But an actress’ performance is heavily influenced by directing and writing.
The problem I found with Tavia’s acting was the fact she resorted to the stock villain character: let’s make the eyes bulge right out of the sockets. Apart from that, I agree, the writing (or lack thereof) was the biggest downfall.
Heheh, funny you mentioned Kevin. I guess his role was so insignificant that it wasn’t worth the space in my brain – I completely forgot about him.

I agree with you. I found BTROC entertaining in a “so bad it’s good” type of way.
I also agree about the writing; one of my main problems with the script was that it never properly depicted Tavia’s character’s transition from good to evil. I could buy her wanting revenge against Selena Li’s character since she (wrongly) blamed her for her miscarriage, but towards the end of the series, especially the last three episodes, her motivations made no sense.
The Kevin-Charmaine romance was really boring, though. I think they spent their entire relationship talking about what tree they were going to plant outside their future home.
I like Tavia, both for her acting and her personality. People fuss over her nose more than anything. Why is it that they have to pick out a flaw and point it at her? She’s not perfect, and you aren’t either. No one is. I think she’s beautiful and deserves #1 Sister as well. People are always fussing over her nose and stuff and that really irritates me, what if someone were to pick out a flaw in you and make fun of it? I don’t think you would like it either.
Well no one in crappy management in TVB will change the promoting the Miss HK deal, it’s been going on for years, they are just going to torture their viewers with crappy acting. Anyhow I am glad that Raymond Wong is in the limelight and starting to catch on more lead rolls, I think he deserve it, from 3rd supporter, to 2nd and now lead! GO Raymond!
Well, Amy Kwok and Anita Yuen were also Miss HKs. Barbara Yung, Florence Kwok, and Kenix Kwok were finalists. Maggie Cheung was placed 2nd. Ada Choi was 3rd. These actresses all started out as Miss HK contestants, but with time, they were cultivated into wonderful and talented award-winning actresses.
Maggie Cheung did not place 2nd. She was just one of the finalists, but she won some “Acting Talents” award.
You are right,there must be something in the water after year 2000, taking the artist longer to improve then back in the 80s and 90s heh. Most of these ladies started as supporting actress and work their way to the top with their acting skills, nowadays they just push them to the lead as fast as they can, even with no improvement to their acting.

Well, talking about Maggie Cheung Man-Yuk, she was terrible in her 1st lead role in a TVB drama series called something to draw with rainbows. She was like memorizing her dialogues and adding her facial expressions on top of it. Anyway, she has been awarded Movie Queen a few times now.
Theres nothing wrong with the water, it’s the harsh treatment from tvb. After winning miss Hk they have many things they need to fulfill and they get paid close to nothing.
That’s why there’s so many models and actresses that would rather try their luck elsewhere. Besides tvb isn’t he big tv station that everyone loves. Mainland china offers more money and bigger chances.

Myolie’s acting is not bad but tavia’s acting is better honestly speaking but again Myolie’s face is real unfortunately tavia’s face is kinda fake(nose) but I will support tavia to be the no.1 sister more but since she is not there then Myolie is GOOD!!

Isn’t Raymond practically THE number one in TVB, having everything tailor-made for him? It’s a shame because his acting’s not that bad and he’s probably a hardworker, but all this favouritism manages to do is diminish his accomplishments. As if he/they care though; he’s raking in all the fame and money anyway.
I guess Liza’s had her fair share of success (music and TV) and she is more senior, having started her career earlier. There’s something about her personality that irks me though.
I agree with you. Raymond’s actually a good actor, and seeing that he chose to get into show business the hard way, it definitely tells you that he takes acting very seriously. Although his music career is flourishing (and he’s probably the only TVB artist who doesn’t need an acting career to be successful) his acting career seems to be in a standstill at the moment. He’s always getting such boring, repetitive roles. He’s not improving, and his new dramas aren’t huge hits either. I’m guessing that we’ll see Raymond more in films later on in his career.
Before, roles are sent to him, not his choice. I hope with the right of choosing roles, he’ll have better role. But he wont film much series so it isnt really a matter to his acting career. He can have breakthrough role on movies, wat I look forward. Movie has more types of role than series.
I also can see that he is kind of getting out from series field to try movie. Maybe one day he’ll do like Louis Koo and Nick Cheung.

I have greater expectations for Raymond Lam. if EEG plans out his career well, spinning out better songs suitable for his love ballad voice, and hooks him up with memorable romantic lead roles, Raymond can become the next Andy Lau!
Raymond has a good 15 years ahead of him to push his career to the next level.
To be honest, I see Louis Koo as more of a heartthrob actor rather than a commanding force in 3 industries (film, music, and TV), which Raymond is making good strides in.
With Louis, Daniel Wu, Andy Lau and older 90s stars getting older, more prominent roles in films will open up. Nicholas Tse’s rise is obvious, but there is more room for another young actor in his 30s.
No, I mean of leaving series to film movies only, not that develoment iin 3 sides. I can see that Louis and Nick dun focus on music career while LF concentrate a lot with it.
So far LF only has first steps on movies. He did 6 and going to have the 7th. Still too less to say something. Music is more of a larger path he is having.

Make it simple and stop the bickering…start from shortest to tallest, youngest to oldest or vice versa and the front row is reserved for lead actors/actresses for the current year shows (to rotate new blood in and out). Variety shows hosts, MCs and DJs will fall in with the rest of the large group.

And Tavia was absent at the gathering yesterday. So therefore we should not assume who has a higher position than whom. They both are actresses doing their job.

Therefore a TV Queen award means a lot (tons of money and popularity) to an actress. “Best Actress” does not mean best acting. It just means that the actress has the best opportunity to achieve her popularity an make more money.

Actually, you are wrong. It is their status in TVB which determine which row and where in the row they stand. A subtle difference in the syntax, but makes a world of difference in the meaning.

Well, these are only preliminary photos. There will be more grand photos taken close to the Anniversary. We will see more clearly in the next group photos when everyone is wearing his or her formal evening clothes.
If “War & Beauty 2” is broadcast as a Anniversary production, probably Sheren Tang and Ada Choi will have to be in the future photos.
Also Louise Lee and Michelle Yim were missing in those photos. If they are in, together with Sheren Tang and Ada Choi, probably the line-ups will have to be re-arranged! Tavia Yeung will definitely be in the grand photos as her drama series, SSSS, will be aired around TVB’s 45th Anniversary.

Aimee doesn’t deserve to stand in the front row. I’m glad that Selena Li got promoted.
Aimee has been acting well in her drama series, especially in “Master of Play”. However, I agree that it is not time yet for Aimee to stand in the front row. Perhaps she will have to move to the 2nd row when other 1st lead artistes (such as Kevin Cheng, Boscco Wong, Tavia Yeung, Louise Lee, Michelle Yim, Sheren Tang and Ada Choi) show up at the actual night.
No she is IMPROVING but still she has very long ways to go to become a lead fa dans. Otherwise she’ll end up to be Bernice fail career in the coming years….
