A Nostalgia Trip for Viewers of C-Drama: “Minning Town”

Many Chinese viewers can relate to the characters and stories of the comedy drama Minning Town <山海情>, a television series produced in celebration of the 100th birthday of the Chinese Communist Party.

Minning Town is set in the 1990s, during the beginning of Deng Xiaoping’s (邓小平) new market policy. Villagers from a town in Xihaigu—China’s poorest prefecture—are forced to locate under the guidance of the national poverty alleviation policy. The migration journey was not easy, but through hard work, dedication, and values of earnest, the villagers are able to turn a “dry sand beach” into a “golden sand beach.”

Nostalgia was the theme of Minning Town’s promotional material, which follows a socialist-realistic style very prevalent across 1990s Communist China. After its premiere on January 12, viewers are also pleasantly surprised at the witty dialogue, many uttered by characters who have a dark sense of humor about their poverty.

Minning Town stars Huang Xuan (黄轩), Zhang Jiayi (张嘉益), Yan Ni (闫妮), Huang Jue (黄觉), Tao Hong (陶红), Huang Yao (黄尧), and Rayza (热依扎), and guest appearances by Yao Chen (姚晨) and Wang Kai (王凯).

  1. Hmmm interesting this is classified as entertainment we generally call it propaganda in free democracy.

      1. @msxie0714 yeah that’s what happens when you have an authoritarian wanting to emulate other dictators lol winnie the pooh. But see that’s where democracy differs from oppressed communie dictatorship, people don’t mysterious disappear even after insurrections.

      2. @seriously half of the american population must prefer authoritarians since they voted for Trump and are willing to die for him. the world is waiting for American civil war 2.0

      3. @msxie0714 well guess the “world” will have to wait. Unlike Communie dictatorship China & Russia, people can vote for a delusional authoritarian (want to be dictator) but democracy won out and the US is stronger because we are a nation of different people and opinions, we will move forward.

      4. @msxie0714The US is flawed it’s not utopia, but homelessness and gun violence is a by product of our freedom. Many choose a life of homelessness, well many choose to arm themselves with guns. These are freedoms we as a nation must weigh on. It is much better option than an oppressed oligarchy. You must love living oppressed and restricted to vehemently argue it’s virtues.

  2. I am watching this. I have four eps til the end. It is not for everyone but for people who do want to see a positive story about people who work hard, this is a moving series. All the characters have enough screen time to show their layers and there is no time wasted. You will laugh and cry with the characters as they go through their ups and downs. I quite like this.
