“All of Us Are Dead” Director on Returning for Season 2
Following the success of Squid Game, zombie school drama All of Us Are Dead is the latest Korean series to become an international hit. Based on the popular webtoon Now at Our School, the series topped Netflix’s global viewership rankings for nine consecutive days, and earned critical praise from media such as The Guardian and Variety.
Although Netflix has not greenlit a second season of All of Us Are Dead yet, director Lee Jae Gyu teased, “If the first season is about human survival, then maybe the second season should be about zombie survival.”
The director added that a second season was part of his plan from the beginning. He explained that characters such as class president Nam Ra (Cho Yi Hyun) and bullying victim Eun Ji (Oh Hye Soo) will be pivotal in the continuation of the story, “People normally become zombies after they get infected and die, but people like Nam Ra, Eun Ji, and Gwi Nam transformed into zombies when they were still alive.”
Responding to the controversial scene where a female high school student was forced to take revealing photos in the changing room, Lee stated the scene was not meant to be gratuitous as this type of unfortunate event happens in real life. “Instead of wanting to sacrifice her life, this character would much delete the nude photos. I hope viewers feel deeply after watching this scene.”
Lee admitted there was a lot of expectation for All of Us Are Dead to succeed prior to its release. Having known Squid Game director Hwang Dong Hyuk for years, Lee said the best advice he received was to have an open mind. The hard efforts of the production team and cast paid off, as All of Us Are Dead has become an international sensation since its January 28 release.
