Andy Lau and Family Are Vegetarian

Andy Lau (劉德華) is well known for his intense privacy. When spotted in public, wife Carol Chu (朱麗倩) often wears a face mask and is surrounded by bodyguards. Even after the birth of Andy’s daughter Hanna Lau (劉向蕙) in 2012, he has only shared a photo of her hand, choosing to shield her from the public’s eye.

Andy cherished the Lunar New Year holiday to spend more time with his family. He revealed that his entire family is vegetarian, and in fact, his daughter had been fed on an exclusively vegetarian diet since birth. When Hanna was born, he took a break from his career and rejected all work so that he could concentrate on looking after her. He explained, “The nanny we hired was not vegetarian, so I had to be in charge of the vegetarian meals for my wife and daughter. I wanted to ensure that the entire family had a clean and wholesome diet.”

Fierce in maintaining her privacy, Andy allegedly did not organize a banquet to celebrate Hanna’s first month of birth. He nevertheless kept to the other customs in Hong Kong and distributed ginger and vinegar – a traditional gift to commemorate a baby’s full month – to his friends and family. Even then, Andy had specially ordered the items from a vegetarian restaurant, to be in line with his vegetarian lifestyle.

    1. Funn,
Protein can be obtained from non-animal sources. Greek yogurt and legumes can provide good sources of protein.

      1. But you will be missing out omega 3 from fish, iron from red meat. Plus baby has to eat a lot of small meals every day, substitute them with vegetables means they need to increase intake of those vegetable to meet the recommended daily intakes. All in all, it’s bad parenting >_>

      2. I was thinking isnt she a bit too young? And i wonder is it religious or lifestyle choice?

      3. @Little Fishy – you can get omega 3 from Chia or flaxseeds and iron from heaps of veges, grains and legumes! ^.^

      4. for anyone that says you cant get all your nutrients from plant based foods, i suggest you get educated about the subject.

Google “The China Study” and get out of the cycle of ignorance

      5. Vegetarian diet is good but to start off since a baby is, in my opinion, a little extreme. They could have ease her slowly into that at the age of 5 or 6. No red meat is ok but fish is good. I think he’s doing it more on ‘religious’ commitment.

      6. ^ I used to believe in the “The China Study” book after I read another book about Low Carb High Fat. High carbohydrate is what killing us, not meat. But that doesn’t mean vegetable is not important. You can’t get enough protein from just eating beans, peas or other vegetarian protein….It’s best to eat 30% meat and 70% vegetables and always 80% full.

      7. Essentially a balanced diet where nothing is taken in extremes is what is healthy. Too much of any one thing is not good for you. Too much salt, too much sugar, too much carb, too much meat, too much sat-fat, all is unhealthy. Understanding what each food group does and how it works with your body is key.

Humans are MEAT eaters by nature. All you need to do is look at your teeth. You have incisors and canines – those are there for meat eating. Herbivores have flat dull teeth.
I think it is fine once you are of a certain age and can make that decision for yourself to become vegan – but for a child? I think it is better you ensure they receive the best sources of food for the best building blocks – and that does not mean taking vitamin pills to supplement the diet.

      8. I know you can get any nutrient from plants product, however, my point is you will need to eat a lot of those to meet the recommended level. For a baby, eating seed w.o teeth is good? And baby already have a massive eating meals everyday, couple that with an increase in nuts/seeds to get iron and omega is just stupid? Plus baby tummy is quite delicate. All in all, it’s best to give the baby normal balance diet rather than these vegetarian meals >_>

      9. Just wondering how all the little Shaolin monks grew up on a vegetarian diet and still spend so much energy to do chores and practise martial arts? So maybe a person can survive healthily on a vegetarian diet? Any thoughts?

    2. a vegetarian diet is not necessarily a bad thing. like some people said, they can get the nutritional needs from other non-meant foods. however, i think at an age of a baby or small child, it’s too unfair that they don’t have a choice. i feel that people choose to become vegetarians, and taking that choice away is somewhat unjustified.

      1. does a baby have a “choice” in not wanting to be fed meat from meat eating parents?

  1. I really don’t like these types of vegetarian ppls, understand that is your choice of lifestyle. But for a baby, they should raise her up normally, then let her choose, instead of imposing on a baby >_> it seriously not good for baby’s development.

    1. agree….I chose to live a vegetarian lifestyle as I got older, but I never have never forced it on my son. I cook him meat…what he likes…then when he grows up he can decide.

But he’s the parents…do as he pleases. Heehee.

    2. i dont understand how raising their child on a compassion diet is wrong?

humans are naturally vegetarians!if you place a banana and a bunny into a crib, 10 out of 10 times, the child will eat the banana and play with the bunny!

      1. You expect the child to eat the live bunny? What kind of analogy is that

      2. i think the analogy was that humans were meant to be vegetarian. Since the child naturally would eat the banana and play with the live bunny, not the other way around.

      3. LOL your analogy is extremely flawed.

Try placing the child with a banana and a cooked bunny.

      4. How about some cooked chicken nuggets from mcdonalds and a banana?

      5. No, we are not vegetarians by nature. As I posted above, you have incisors and canine teeth – those are meat eating teeth.

      6. we are in fact all meat eaters from the beginning. we hunted animals to survive. it wasn’t until the invention/discovery of farming that we started eating carbs and veges….

      7. Lol, human are not meant to be vegetarian… I don’t know where you get this idea from >_> let looks at monkey/chimpanzee/apes, they are also meat eater. Sure, majority of their diet is fruit, but that doesn’t mean they are vegetarian >__>

      8. Again, lost half of what I typed. As tvbfanatic pointed out above, our teeths shown we are meat eater. We got our teeth after centuries of evolution shown that we are meat eater >_>

    3. i don’t mind vegetarians – what i don’t like is people eating vegetarian “meatloafs”.. soy-hot-dogs.. vegie-chicken.. made-believe-roastPork.. etc

      1. people love good food, but you can still enjoy food without murdering animals. that’s the purpose of veggie meats

      2. We need to change with the times. Meat eating may not have meant torture, cruelty and deplorable conditions 100 years ago but it sure does now. The best thing anyone can do is educate themselves on the meat industry and then decide how they want to support it, the problem is that we willingly blind ourselves to reality.

      3. Recent studies shows plants can feel pain. I suppose the food pool is getting smaller and smaller. There are breathenarians or something like that. Maybe air is our future food source.

Or rear your own chickens and pigs and cows. Saw a family rear sayyy a pig and name the pig piggy like a pet and let it run, showered it with love and good food and when they’re grown, chopped for bacon. I find that even more hypocritical. Of course don’t like slash the neck and let the blood drain whilst reading prayers. That’s cruel.

      4. “Recent studies shows plants can feel pain. I suppose the food pool is getting smaller and smaller. There are breathenarians or something like that. Maybe air is our future food source.”

But-but-but, how do we know that those poor air molecules don’t feel pain? Hmmm… (j/k, of course) 🙂

    4. They are not right to force it on their 3 year old daughter. She will be like an alien on this planet not knowing what meat taste like. They should raise her normal. Let her decide when she is older. As for the parents, they had their full life. Why denied their child.

      1. The same line of argument on religious belief? So it’s wrong for Christian or Buddhism or Muslim parents to take their kids to churches, temples (places of worship)… they should let the child decide which Gods to believe in when they get older?

    5. Define ‘normally’. People raise their children however they see fit and best for their child. I am not a vegetarian, so i am not going to comment on the nutritional value. Agree or disagree, it’s the parents choice of what’s best for their child. Just like religions and every other core values, as long as they don’t teach their kids to hate someone simply because they are different …

  2. i dont know but somewhere i think she will have limited freedom when she grow up with such a father, every step of her daughter must be screened and proved by her andy, looking at andy’s behaviour towards his family i think andy is so careful that he looks like someone thats in a constant paranoid trance.

    1. Her freedom has already been limited. The moment she is born as Andy Lau’s daughter, for the rest of her life, even after her father’s death, the media will follow her.

      1. as a celebrity’s child, he/she will be hounded by media for the rest of their lives. parents can be vegetarians, but a 3 year old needs the sufficient protein which is not avail in vegetables.

    2. That poor child’s lifestyle will be dictated by the father (don’t be surprised if she’ll be home schooled or sent away to some exclusive overseas girls’ school. We already know how ‘authoritative’ mum is. Before AL became such a big ‘shot’, other celebrity=parents (e.g. Sammo, Yuen Biao, Ti Lung, etc etc) also gave their children as much privacy as possible, which is understandable. But AL is paranoid **

      1. Jasmine7, i agreed. He is getting paranoid these days. Time has changed when people are more open towards those privacy/relationships. Many others are so proud to share their happy moments with fans. But AL is doing the other way. The more paranoid he becomes, the more I dislike him.

      2. It is Andy’s choice how he wants to protect his family. You can disagree with his way of protecting his family but you don’t need to dislike him unreasonably. Let me ask you, if someone kidnaps or hurts Andy’s family member, are you able to help them? No, right? So why can’t Andy protect his family the way he thinks is best for them? If you have money and are a famous celebrity, you may think differently and want to protect yourself and your family more than a less well-known person do.

    3. Hmmm. Would one prefer a loving, dependable but overprotective dad like Andy Lau or an absent, selfrighteous and vague dad like Jackie Chan?

  3. Actually I think it is quite common. Several of my son classmates was vegetarian and they were only preschooler at that time.

  4. huh? No milk for the baby?? Milk is consider non-vegetarian food.

    1. Vegetarian eats dairy products just no meat of any kind. Vegan are no meat and no dairy product.

  5. So his kids can be skinny like him. He used to be very good looking until he’s obsessed with his weight lose.

  6. … @jayne … where r andy lau movies news ? why r so late ? lost and love ? saving mr.wu ? the bodyguard ? … ?

    1. San,
Will keep an eye out for Andy’s movies. Usually closer to the release date, there is more buzz about the movie.

  7. Why so many people is focusing on how he raising his daughter? This is a lifestyle he choose for his family. Same goes to every parents.

    1. But the poor 3-year old doesn’t get to pick how she wanted be raised, she has no choice but let andy decide for her.

      1. “But the poor 3-year old doesn’t get to pick how she wanted be raised, “

Uh, isn’t that the case for all 3-year olds?

      2. But most three year old don’t go on a vegetarian diet at such a young age.

      3. And how do you know whether she likes it or not?

      4. that logic is flawed. Why is it ok for a Baby to be forced to eat meat from their meat eating parents when he/she may not choose to wanting to eat meat?

      5. Your counter argument is worse though. “Why is it ok for baby to be forced eating meat from meat eating parents when she may or may not want to eat” this is because the parents is giving her a normal healthy, well rounded diet that is essential for growing. Instead of restricting her diets, that might cause issues with her development. One is ensuring baby having all the right things it needs for development, the other is because they wanted it that way. The mentality is very different.

While being vegetarians is in itself pretty healthy if you eat correctly, it’s not how our body naturally built. Some of the essential nutrient we need come from meat products like omega 3 from fish, and iron from red meat. It’s true that you can get them from vegetable, but you will need to eat a big amount to get the same amount from small portion of fish/red meat. The main concern is that with a child being too small, forcing her eating a lot of plant product to make up for the loss from normal diets will upsetting her delicate tummy. It’s about the child well beings, sure Andy has more money than all of us combine, but that doesn’t mean he’s right or that’s a sensible way to raise a child (keywords sensible)

    2. I live in the states but haven’t much about it on the news or from people around me lol

      1. Duplicate comments lol. Once again I agreed with little fishy, he/she makes good arguments.

  8. I’m sure he knows what he’s doing. When he decided on a vegetarian diet for his daughter, I’m sure he would have done research on it, being such a careful father.

  9. There are many families with kids being raised on vegetarian diet from birth. It is not uncommon.

      1. there are tons in the states and those babies turn out very normal and healthy

      2. I live in the states but haven’t much about it on the news or from people around me lol

    1. It’s not uncommon, but I still think it’s an unhealthy choice for baby. Raising a baby as normally as possible is the best way. Nurture her in a specialise way when there is no need just a bit extreme. Whether making the baby vegetarian, or in a control environment is not great in term of development. And as parents, you should let your child try everything instead of limiting it at such a young age. No wonder there are more and more babies picky on food

      1. Then parents must let their child eat insects too, since it’s future food, full of protein. Those who judged him is biased too. He is the parents, he is not abusing his child. You think he stupid or what? His monthly body guard fees may be my yearly income already. He will not blindly feed vegetarian diet to his child. He seldom mentioned and media play about his family. But he took care of them well, even cook for them. How many rich milloinaires husband can do it??? He is happy with his family, that’s y he shared that they are all vegetarians. He is doing his best for his family. That’s it.

Judge him only if his daughter grow up, and if he still forcing his mind set on her. Judge him now is just too unfair!!!!

    2. Lots of vegans and vegetarians in San Franciso. As a matter of fact, you will see most restaurants here have meatless options to cater to the growing number of vegans and vegetarians. My daughters schools have many students who are vegans and vegetarians. Schools in SF lunch menus consist of vegetarian options as well.

  10. He will not jeopardise his daughter’s health due to his lifestyle. I am sure he had consulted doctors and dieticians before feeding his baby girl vegetarian.

  11. Common. By the time his child reaches puberty, I wonder if this weirdo is still alive or not. Look at him. He looks unhealthy & gaunt.

    1. …. this wierdo will defenitely out live you @rustynails and certainly have better and loving family, great wife , good children than you. u can count on it.

      1. Don’t be so certain,no one knows what the future holds….

    2. What a rude comment! You are the type of person who is happy when you see other people die and can’t see their children grow up. You are definitely a weirdo, not him.

      1. …@rainbow, no one happy to see someone die, maybe a bad one. Like @heidi comment that no one cant predict future. i just comment what @rustynails mean really.

  12. I do not see any thing bad with Andy feeding her daughter with vegetarian food, as long as it is a balance diet. Being a vegetarian is extremely unhealthy only if you do not know how to eat.

As parents I believe we know what are the best thing to give to our child. What is good for me, may not be good in others’ opinion. Being born to a family, young children just have to follow the family’s lifestyle until they are old enough to make their own mature decision.

  13. Go check with the Indians in India ; they’re the pro of vegetarian by looking at their lifestyle, health and diet all can be seen and answers whether is good or bad.

  14. Oh no … Wrong choice .. It might be good for adult but not kids. He should seek for professional nutrition doctors’ recommendations .

  15. Impressive.

Lau-family’s food preferences warrants 77 comments.

Tons of vegans in NAmerica – lifestyle choice. Their babies grow up just fine into normal children.

  16. Vegan and vegetarian are 2 different Groups…vegan are strictly no meats and no animal by products, such as eggs and milk as well. But Vegetarians can still eat animal by products such as eggs.

  17. cannot go vegetarian at 3 years old one. can be retarded later.

  18. ppl go vegetarian for all the wrong reasons nowadays and take pride in it. sigh….lame

    1. Totally agree it’s best to eat all foods and in moderation
