Andy Lau Receives Praises for Amputee Character in “Shock Wave 2”
Andy Lau (劉德華) and director Herman Yau (邱禮濤) return with Shock Wave 2 <拆彈專家2>, an action film that follows a former bomb disposal officer who becomes a primary suspect following a terrorist bombing.
Originally scheduled for a Christmas release in Hong Kong, the premiere was pushed back to January 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to temporary closure of cinemas. However, the film was released unabridged in mainland China, and in just four days, the film grossed over 400 million yuan in China. The film was a critical success, with many raving about Andy Lau’s performance.
Andy stars as Poon Sing Fung, a former bomb disposal officer who lost a leg during an explosion. In the film, he learns to cope with a missing leg all the while he escapes from authorities in his search for justice.
His performance was so good, some netizens were fooled.
“Did Andy Lau actually lose a leg?” one netizen asked innocently. It prompted the official Weibo of Shock Wave to respond, “Hahaha! Netizens thought Andy Lau actually amputated his leg. There’s no need for that! You don’t need to be that method!”
In the behind-the-scenes footage, Andy wore a green sock for the green screen. He also practiced walking as an amputee with physical therapists.
