Ang Lee Shares Updates on Bruce Lee Biopic

Currently at work on a biopic on martial arts icon Bruce Lee (李小龍), renowned director Ang Lee (李安) shares more updates!

Rejects 3D Format

An innovator in many ways, the director of acclaimed films such as Brokeback Mountain and Life of Pi had jumped ahead of technology, and released two films in 3D format previously – Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk in 2016 and Gemini Man starring Will Smith in 2019.

However, both releases ended up flopping at the box office, which Ang Lee himself attributed to viewers being not ready for the format. In recent interviews, Lee has confirmed that he will be eschewing Higher Frame Rate (HFR) and 3D in favor of regular filmmaking methods for the upcoming biopic that is currently under development at Sony’s 3000 Pictures

The idea for the biopic is said to have been introduced to the director by his own wife and daughter. Actor Mason Lee (李淳), Ang Lee’s son, will be playing the main lead; insider sources added that the 33-years-old had been working hard on preparations for the film, spending 3 years training, even throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

  1. Nepotism at its finest.

And also, why did Brokeback Mountain “jump ahead of technology”. It was a drama and love story, nothing technologically commendable that I remember.
