Barbara Chan Promotes Work on Death Education

Former TVB actress Barbara Chan (陳敏兒) , is no stranger to loss and grief. She lost her six-year-old son to leukemia in 2006 and her husband Liu Kai Chi (廖啟智) to stomach cancer in 2021. Finding comfort through Christianity, Barbara credits her faith in helping navigate through the toughest of times.

Accepting an interview with talk show host Benjamin Lee (李有毅), Barbara shared she has been actively promoting work related to death education. She recently opened a tea room that serves multiple purposes – to host massage workshops, body, mind, and spirit workshops, as well as to commemorate Liu Kai Chi.

Months prior to Liu Kai Chi’s death, Barbara learned massage to relieve her husband’s discomfort. Witnessing her husband suffering from insomnia, Barbara took massage lessons to help Liu Kai Chi sleep better. Within three minutes of massaging him, she would hear him snoring. This inspired Barbara to teach massage to help other caregivers hone relevant skills.

Barbara also hosts spirit, body, and mind workshops. After completing a program in the United States, Barbara developed her own program that focuses on five phases – thank you, I love you, I’m sorry, I forgive you, and goodbye. Hoping to minimize feelings of regret during life and death separation and to promote proper goodbyes, Barbara’s program was inspired by witnessing family members and patients in the hospice ward who go through these five phases.
