“Barrack O’Karma 2” Premiere Leaves Fans Hanging with Speculations
TVB’s Barrack O’Karma 2 <金宵大廈 2> has premiered on April 4 with positive reception as many fans eagerly tuned in for the supernatural storyline. Starring Selena Lee (李施嬅) and Joel Chan (陳山聰). The drama premiered to positive reception and kept fans guessing on how the plot will develop.
Loosely based on the original drama, Barrack O’Karma 2 follows a new set of characters as they experience strange and mysterious events at the Golden Night Building. This time, the story focuses on Ella (Selena) and her relationship with Maurice (Joel). Although the couple are living together, it appears that the two are having problems in their relationship.
Many fans quickly went online to share their thoughts as they picked up on Maurice’s strange behaviors. In the premiere, fans noted that Maurice’s personality drastically changed after he returned from a business trip in Taiwan. When Ella invited Maurice to take a bath together, Maurice reacted coldly and then suddenly became passionate. Fans also recalled the scene where Ella found a wet umbrella in Maurice’s luggage despite Maurice claiming that it did not rain in Taiwan.
Putting the puzzles together, fans are speculating that Maurice had an accident during his travel and returned as a ghost. However, producer Yip Chun Fai (葉鎮輝) clarified in an interview and insisted that Maurice did not die. He added that Maurice’s hot and cold behaviors were signs that there are cracks in the couple’s relationship.
Yip Chun Fai revealed he was reading fans’ discussion and was surprised by the various speculations, “I did not expect fans would study the drama and dialogues so carefully. It’s like they are filling in the blanks and writing different answers. It is very imaginative and there are answers that I didn’t even think of myself. The actor’s eyes or dialogues are there to accentuate the atmosphere so fans shouldn’t overthink the plot. However, this is all part of the fun of the sequel where fans are guessing the plot while chasing the drama.”

Has anyone started watching this yet and can give feedback on how it’s been so far? I’m very wary of TVB sequels, and they always seem to lose the charm of the original.
