“Business Proposal” Director Blasts ViuTV
ViuTV’s remake of Korean drama Business Proposal <社內相親> starring Anson Lo (盧瀚霆), Edan Lui (呂爵安), Hanna Chan (陳漢娜), and Shirley Sham (沈殷怡) aired last year to good reception. During ViuTV’s 2023 awards ceremony in February, it was the grand winner and walked away with six awards. Shockingly, the drama’s director Gurt Wong (黃汝樂) exposed ViuTV for poor production practices.
He wrote on Instagram, “Recently some employees told me they’re starting to feel that TVB really isn’t that bad after all. I understand, industry insiders said ViuTV would become a second TVB. That it would always try to hedge bets on using as little resources as possible, that it would continuously cut production budget, play office politics, fail to see the big picture, have departments act unprofessionally, and not pay on time. Let’s not even talk about Business Proposal; there are even older dramas that haven’t fully paid staff expenses yet.
“As more people in the industry hear about this, the more they’re hesitating. Many have already switched careers. Behind the moment of glory, there’s only a pool of stagnant water. A certain entertainment mogul had secretly said Hong Kong’s entertainment industry will face at least five years of stagnancy. If the industry doesn’t see an uptick, then nothing will improve even if thousands of celebrities appear.”
Gurt previously worked at TVB as a director so he is familiar with the criticism facing the station’s production methods. His credits include: Come Home Love: Lo and Behold <愛‧回家之開心速遞>, Short End of the Stick <公公出宮>, and Married but Available <我瞞結婚了>. In 2017, he created his own workshop and worked with ViuTV. He also worked as an editing director on Being an Actor <做演藝嘅>, Showman’s Show <娛樂風雲>, and Shadow of Justice <蝕日風暴>.
