Candy Chang is Cleared of Drug Possession Charges

After a police investigation that lasted for nearly half a year, Candy Chang (張慧雯) is finally cleared of drug possession charges.

In November 2012, The Hippocratic Crush <On Call 36小時> star fell asleep while being a passenger in a male acquaintance’s van. Speeding at  93 miles (or 150 kilometers) per hour, the van was pulled over by the Hong Kong police. The driver and Candy were immediately arrested upon discovery of 13 bags of marijuana in the vehicle.

From the outset, the 23-year-old TVB actress cried her innocence and said that she did not know there was marijuana in the car. She also stated that she did not know the driver well; he was only an acquaintance she had met through a mutual friend recently. The driver also said that Candy was unaware of the presence of marijuana inside the car. Candy’s fingerprints were also not found on the marijuana bags.

Candy has been regularly reporting to the police station over the last several months. Arriving at the Sheung Shui police station yesterday, Candy was finally released unconditionally due to insufficient evidence.

Candy’s work at TVB was halted during her police investigation. It is expected that she may join the filming of The Hippocratic Crush 2  now that investigation is over and resume the role she had portrayed in the first installment of the popular medical drama.

  1. I hope she comes back to Hippocratic Crush II! I wish this was settled sooner because it would be great to see her role evolve. And her relationship with Him to grow too. But now that Eliza is in the picture … 🙁

  2. So if she was not cleared, what were they going to do with her role? Kill her off? Disease? Typical tvb?

I saw potential in her! Actually, I like her a lot!

    1. @Crystal @Chriselle

TVB scriptwriters are known for their “flying papers” where the script for scenes are literally written up the night before. So it shouldn’t be hard to write in Candy’s character, given that they would be mostly romantic scenes anyway. Or give her a cameo role if they wish to use the drama as a vehicle to promote newcomers.

Producer Poon Ka Tak said that once Candy Chang’s case is cleared, she will be welcomed back. He didn’t wish to include her in the initial filming not knowing if she would be required in court appearances.

      1. Oh okay. That makes sense.

But it seems that TVB has their mind set on Eliza and Him being a couple. Plot twist maybe? Hopefully the original pairings end up together!

  3. How long ago has THC2 started filming? Surprised that she wasn’t replaced with someone else already as TVB likes to film their series as rapidly as possible. So TVB has kept her scenes unfilmed until she is cleared?

    1. They just started filming last month. TVb is known making script changes in the last minute while filming. Its 50/50 is she is in the the series or not.

  4. due to insufficient evidence does not mean she is not guilty

      1. Guilty or non guilty, it has impacted on her overall image and will remain as part of her history. From watching THC, I think she has potential to be a good actress, and hope she can move on from this incident and get back on track. Looking forward to her appearance and storyline in THC2…I quite liked the development between her character and Him Law’s character.

    1. With or without evidence, so what? It’s marijuana. Isn’t it about time countries made pot legal? Studies have actually showed that pot is not half as bad for your health as cigarettes. The HK police need to focus on real drug (cocaine, heroin) trafficking that happens in HK. And if this incident does in fact make an impact on her acting career, it simply goes to show how brainless HK audiences are.

      1. I disagree. Any drugs not meant for medical use should and must be banned for general consumption. Just because it is less harmful doesn’t make it better. And I have not heard of anyone beating another for a ciggie but has heard of fights for money to buy drugs, and Marijuana, whatever class it is, is still drug. To be fair, ban ciggie too. Hk audience are not brainless. Blame the prosecutor for wasting everyone’s time and tax money.

      2. Weed is still bad, but it is not really a criminal offense if you carry small amounts.

      3. @Funn Lim – so alcohol is a drug, should we ban that? Also, the active ingredient in tobacco, nicotine, is also a drug. Should we ban that, too? Have you ever wondered why some drugs are so taboo to us, yet some are okay (cigarette, alcohol) when in the end, they are all drugs? Almost half of Asia smokes, yet it’s hard fact by now that there are NO benefits to cigarettes. Not only it hurts your health, it hurts others around you cuz of second hand smoke. Ever wondered why something proven to be so dangerous seems so acceptable?

      4. Larry3, that depends on where you are carrying.

Cara, I say ban them all. But they tried didn’t they and gave new rise to gangterism in the olden days. Anyway I suppose a lesser evil. But in my humble opinion, you are right. But in the end why the ones you named are acceptable is because of lobbying. There are some powerful industries and lobbyists behind these all. I still maintain any drugs not for medical reasons should and must be banned.

  5. Glad it’s all over for her now! It must have been one of the worst few months of her life. The worst thing is that it will have dragged down her image even though she’s been cleared off the charges. THCII-wise, it also means that the Him-Candy pairing is tarnished, which is terrible for all their fans. I personally didn’t think she was great in THCI, but I still hope that she will get good opportunities to prove herself!
