[Breakup Files] Charlene Choi Denies Breakup with William Chan Was Caused by a Third Party

Charlene Choi (蔡卓妍) has appeared to be in low spirits since announcing the end to her five-year relationship with William Chan (陳偉霆). At rehearsals for a charity fundraising program organized by TVB, Charlene looked listless and distracted. Charlene’s smile looked forced and her cheeks pale. Even during rehearsals, Charlene’s dance steps also seemed to lack energy.

Despite heavy media interest, Charlene chose not to disclose the reason for their breakup.The breakup was reportedly caused by William’s involvement with popular Mainland Chinese actress, Zanilia Zhao (趙麗穎), whom he held hands with while rehearsing lines from a script.

Charlene however strongly defended William and emphasized that their breakup was not caused by any third-party interference, “There was never any [third party]! None! It was mainly because we were both really busy and saw very little of each other.”

On whether William’s sudden surge in popularity in Mainland China had adversely affected their relationship, Charlene said emphatically, “No, he’s not that sort of person. I’ve known him for many years. Even if we can’t be lovers, we’re still very good friends. I’m very clear that he’s not that kind of person.”

Charlene also added that in fact, the tremendous publicity and fans’ remarks both had a role to play in causing their breakup. She said, “I don’t mind receiving personal attacks on myself, but it was heartbreaking when fans would attack [him]. That was really the last thing I wanted.”

Finally, Charlene denied that she was using her breakup as a publicity tool for her upcoming album and online drama series, “Not every artiste needs that kind of publicity. I’ve never wanted to publicize this from the start. It would be best if people stopped asking and talking about it.” Although Charlene ultimately said that her emotions had somewhat recovered from the breakup, she appeared to be holding back tears as she spoke.

Gillian Chung (鍾欣桐) expressed that she is spending time with Charlene and will support her during this difficult time. On whether she had given Charlene any advice, Gillian said, “Whatever I have said shall remain in my heart. I don’t wish to disclose the contents.”
