Charmaine Sheh and Sheren Tang May Not Appear at TVB Anniversary Awards?
At the cast and crew dinner of Rosy Business 2 <巾幗梟雄之義海豪情>, Sheren Tang Shui Man said that aside from good ratings, she hoped that word-of-mouth will be favorable as well, sparking people to return home to watch the series every night.
Regarding the TVB Anniversary Awards, one of the hot favorites for Best Actress, Charmaine Sheh Si Man, may not be able to attend the awards ceremony due to filming commitments in China . Sheren denied that this may increase Sheren’s odds in winning the award instead. Sheren noted that if Charmaine were to win the award, TVB will request her to return to Hong Kong to accept the award.
Sheren noted that she will be filming in China during the TVB Anniversary time frame as well. She joked that if she did not make it into the Top Five Best Actress list, she may not attend the TVB Anniversary event. In any case, Sheren will regard the awards with a normal state of mind.

Jayne: It is still difficult to say whether Sheren Tang will receive the Best Actress Award again this year or TVB will give the award to Charmaine Sheh. Whoever wins, it would be a shame if the other does not appear at the TVB Anniversary. I felt that many big stars were already missing at this year’s Lighting Ceremony!
Hope they’ll both be there! Already most of the fadans are gone and Charmaine has been consistent in attending every year. The ceremony will be boring without the 2 hot favorites there. Who would be left?
Year in year out TVB will USE Charmaine or her name to hype the awards and to promote other actresses. It would be a waste of time warming up benches.
Remember how shamelessly TVB sarifice BTROC cast on the Favorite Drama Award through it was the highest rated drama in 2009.
The Award Show is getting boring ever since the 2007 edition. It so obvious MOST awards goes to THAT particular series and eventually wins the Best Drama.
BTROC was crap so rightfully it was “sacrificed”.
And I wonder which series is Charmaine expected to win for? Because if it is CBML, please oh dear lord please not that one. She needs and with her popularity deserves a better material to win for.
Yes, please don’t give any awards to CBML.. that was one of the crappiest and most ridiculous series of the year… almost the entire cast acted very OTT and retarded in the series… the CBML cast can do better..
what, why shld btroc win “BEST” drama? does high = best? that was such a lousy drama + lots of bs. so what if it has high ratings? it didn’t have +ve feedback that they were hoping for. it was right of tvb (for once they are thinking) to scrape btroc. if btroc had won it, tvb wld have been in trouble.
if charmaine is to win any award, she better choose her drama carefully or well, improve on her acting. only then can she truly win the hearts of the rest of audience, not just her fans.
and who is tvb trying to promote this time, using charmaine? not really anyone i can think of.
not everybody needs promoting and they can still be popular, if not even more popular.
CharmaineSheh the “BEST drama ” #1 in TVB
I think Charmaine Sheh will definitely get the Best Actress Award for sure, b/c she has more marketing value than Sheren (Sry, I do like her as an actress). Also, by giving the award to Charmaine, it can hype up her currently filming series “Sister Fa” which ppl will talk about it when it airs to see if she can retain her title. Lastly, I really can see Charmaine being the #1 top sister in TVB, it’s early but not a bad time to start pushing toward the path.
I think TVB might give Sheren the Favourite Actress award, like what they did with Louise Lee.
My other predictions:
Wayne getting at least the Best Actor, b/c he can really take the role of #1 Brother in TVB. And his great acting skills.
Raymond would probably win the favourite actor for his Professor King role since TVB is really giving him a push.
Kenneth probably gets the supporting actor
Linda probably getting the supporting actress
TVB really needs to start giving young artists a push by giving them an award to put them over.
why give charmaine the award just to hype sister fa? if she is good, then of course she deserves it, but the problem is, she is not. according to my hk friends, charmaine may be popular among the younger fans, but she does not enjoy the same national adoration that people have for sheren.
and tvb needs to start getting some really young talent who can act. where’s the acting class? how come now all the actors are winners from beauty pageants? tvb needs to know that not all pretty faces can act. no wonder tvb dramas are going from bad to worse.
just have to see how no regrets turn out to be. if it beats CBML in ratings, then there’s higher chances of sheren winning best actress.
Hannah, the next one the list will be Kate Tsui in Forensic Heroes 3. The one I can think of right now is Fala Chan.
Honestly, Charmaine HASN’T been picking up good ROLES coz the ones she has of late ARE YOUNGER roles. A thirty something person should be taking up more challenging roles.
Please don’t say that Sister Fa’s character is challenging coz it really makes her look Goffy.
In terms of storyline, plots & the various characters evolution in a series, I’ve favour more to Rosy Business 1.
I do not approve of Charmaine winning for CBML. Although, I do believe she was one of the few (the others: Fala, Susan, Susanna) who didn’t act ridiculously OTT and her acting in general was quite good. Though it was no where near Best Actress material. Nothing about CBML was Best Anything material. If she wins for this show, it will not win her more fans. Instead the general public might turn against her (again). She needs to win universally, in order to cement her status in TVB.
Love Sheren, really do. But from the few scenes I’ve seen of NR, she’s nearing over-acting too. I feel like TVB has, because of RB’s success made NR even more dramatic and over-the-top which often results in a lot of over-acting. Can’t really decide. I need to watch more of NR. Still, Sheren is in a completely different league than Charmaine.
actually, i did not think sheren overacted. instead, i will give her the props for being able to bring out the complexities of her character. cheng kau mui is a very complex person. there is no way you can really truly understand her. she can be fake at times, she can be real at other times. we audience just don’t know when she is feeling true or when she is going to harm another person for her own gain.
advo, i think i get what you mean when you say sheren’s nearing over-acting. but that’s because kau mui’s character is like that. besides, i don’t know of anybody else who can play kau mui’s role as well as sheren. so i must still say, sheren suits kau mui.
I agree that Sheren is more deserving to win than Charmaine. However, the Best Actress/Actor is decided by TVB executives & it is delusional to think that the better person will win.
Charmaine has a promoted series coming up next year “Sister Fa” while Sheren doesn’t seem to have a promoted series coming up soon. Giving Charmaine the award might be better b/c CBML is a high rated series, so the executives have an excuse to let it slide.
Giving Sheren the favourite actress award (voted by viewers) will probably what will happen. It’s a win-win situation.
TVB also tends to lack of the commitment of promoting a young artist; they’ll promote them but not for a long period (1-2yrs).
I read from the tvb forum that a lot of them think Sheren and Wayne are over-acting and not natural enough.
Hope they get better with the coming episodes.. Otherwise, Sheren’s hopes of getting best actress will be quite slim.
I honestly don’t blame either Wayne or Sheren if they are over-acting. My bet is that the script requires them to be so OTT. Like I said earlier, TVB has a history of making sequels packed with excessive drama. HOG was a hot mess and melodramatic enough, but MR was even more packed. There was hardly a scene without a huge row. Luckily, MR was better structured and in the end, still a much better show than HOG.
@danielle lol, you cannot trust the tvb forum. if you have noticed, all those threads that degrade sheren’s and wayne’s acting are actually started by childish ppl. you can tell because their usernames are very much made up of random letters and numbers and they have only a few posts. and it is most likely the same person who is using different usernames to “talk” to themselves. their opinions cannot really be taken seriously.
for feedback and comments that are more reflective of the hk ppl, go to the hk discussion boards. never trust the tvb forum, because there are bound to be fans of other actors and dramas (can pretty much tell which drama it is from) who put down other ppl.
@advo i think drama is what the hk ppl love to see. the more dramatic, the better. i guess the script-writers are just writing what the hk ppl like to see. haha, i thought HOG was a much better show than MR. MR was just… too noisy for me, and there were much more unimportant side storylines that i felt was boring.
NR is dramatic, but i don’t think that it’s over-dramatic. well, at least not to MR’s standard yet. there are still heart-warming and comedic moments that bring smiles or tears to my face.
charmaine sheh definetely deserved to win best actress award and my favorite charater award this year in cbml and as for sheren tang i think she sucks in acting. she only won the award last year becauz tvb wanted her to signed a big contract with them samething when gigi lai win. there’s completely nothing special about fourth mistress bu just taking care of the rice business for her husband so it wouldn’t be in the hands of spoilage son bit mun and first mistress . if a character liked that could win an award then louise lee should’ve won it in kindred spirit solving all the family problem. charmaine sheh should’ve won the award last year for beyond the realm of conscience cuz her character was really interesting especially runging out all the evil plans of tavia yeung and ma yiun jee especially at the very end when charmaine showed the king’s jade stamp which shocked ma yiun jee and tavia half dead and no doubt about that tavia yeung winning my favorite female charater award but i still preferred charmaine sheh winning all three just liked in 2006 for maiden’s vow
^ You sound very childish. Obviously you are a charmaine fan, and i don’t fault you for this, but PLEASE, show respect to other actresses! What’s with you saying that by letting sheren win last year, she will sign a contract with tvb? Did she sign it in the end? No, and sheren has said that she will never use the award as an incentive to sign a contract. Up till now, she is still not tvb’s biological daughter. Bloody get your facts right before you accuse other people of doing this and that!
If you said that there’s nothing special about 4th mistress, then i must say that she is a more 3-dimensional character than charmaine’s lau sam ho, who is so pure and innocent that she’s almost godly. *rolls eyes* What’s so interesting about this character? *snores* There are even news reports saying that lau sam ho is the perfect reason for going to the toilet when btroc was airing.
For your info, the awards thing didn’t start until 1997, that’s why neither louise nor nancy got any prize for kindred spirit.
And lol, charmaine’s win in 2006 was not very well-received. If she wins it for cbml, people will accuse tvb of favouritism. I am not against her for getting “my fav character” award, but DEFINITELY NOT best actress, yet. She did not deserve it the last time, and has not shown that she deserves it, yet.
I saw the 1st episode and frankly not as grand as I thought it would be but I like the widescreen perspective. Can’t fault the acting EXCEPT to cast sheren as the daughter or rather Elliot Yue as the father is a total miscast. Sheren doesn’t look much younger. It should be a much older actor who can emote better. And the 1st episode typical of TVB to be so darn dramatic. Shall wait for it to cool down and only then story proper will begin. And I disagree starting the series with her death where everybody crying so we know she sacrificed and she was a good woman. Which means we shall have to sit through episodes and episodes of her doing bad things knowing she is good which is sort of predictable. I prefer the story starts with the perspective of Pierre Ngo without the funeral and let us guessing if she is good or she is bad which we already know the answer. Again I believe Wayne will die?
And what’s with this dog meat scandal? rosy business showed Wayne beating a dog to death, eating it complete with bones, fur and what nots. Any complaints on that?
I really feel TVB should stop churning out these soaps like a factory. Please, for the love of God, viewers deserve better and so do the TVB actors. Why can’t TVB focus on making soaps that are more than 20 or 40 episodes. Maybe they won’t turn out to be so crappy. I agree, Can’t Buy Me Love is so stupid. It is supposed to be funny but I find it boring and a waste of the talents of the great actors in it like Moses & Charmaine, etc -put some more effort into writing a better script guys!. Beyond the Realm of Conscience is OK – you got to give an A+ to all leads for these long and hard dialogues.
“Why can’t TVB focus on making soaps that are more than 20 or 40 episodes. “
TVB can’t do long series well nowadays except sitcom. Look at ‘Drive of Life’ (60 episodes) and ‘Gem of Life’ (80 episodes).
I think most people nowadays don’t have the patience for long serials anymore and the fact that TVB keeps churning out crappy series with stupid storylines doesn’t help either. I think TVB should invest in getting more talent in writing think tanks than bringing on pretty faces that can’t act or even speak Cantonese properly..
Gem Of life can’t survive 80 episodes, neither is Drive of life such a series. TVB if intends to make long series, the only way to go is historical series. Or get better script. And they don’t have that many actors to come in and out of a scene so those 2 quoted series were repetetive by the time they reached episode 40.
Oh gosh, don’t even remind me of Gem of Life… That series was so long, redundant and really really boring… I personally don’t really like modern series to start with but really long ones?? NO way! I think the only way for TVB to do a good/decent long series is to get a good long novel and adapt it at least somewhat accurately, OR do a long sitcom just like they did with Virtues of Harmony which turned out ok.
If you want to get technical, CBML shouldn’t even be nominated in the best drama category because it’s not a drama; it’s a corny, overdone attempt at comedy. They should just relabel the category as best program. I’m not gonna knock the acting of CBML though i despised it because if the actors are overacting that is the fault of the director. I don’t think the acting in No Regrets was overdone, the plot is very intense and the storyline calls for extreme emotion. If you think it’s overdone maybe it’s because TVB rarely does tragic war themes and you’re not used to it. Anyone who thinks Sheren Tang can’t act should pull their heads out of their behinds and give credit where it’s due. She’s a great actress. I think if she were 20 years younger a lot of people would be changing their opinions about that. Charmaine Sheh’s acting is okay, I think her acting is on par with Sheren’s 20 years ago. I don’t doubt her acting could be great if given a challenging role, which I’ve yet to see. Most of her roles so far have been wholesome, it just seems to me like she’s playing similar characters over and over.
I agree, I would be very disappointed if CBML got Best Series just because it had high ratings. It’s not that the cast were bad actors, but I think it’s the fault of the script. I also can’t think of anyone who could have portrayed Sheren’s role in No Regrets as good as she did. It’s a very complex role that needed various emotions in it. I really hope she wins Best Actress. If TVB doesn’t give it to her just because she won’t attend the ceremony, then it’s really unfair.
Agreed with both Tempest and Aly! May the most deserving win instead of the most liked..
I think that CBML was a very meaningful and funny seris.the script was written very good teaches lots of thing.I really like the part when Charmaine and Moses got in jail together. That part was very good very meaningful.I’m only 12 CBML had teach me lots of meaningful thing in life like love ur family.Other people may betray u but ur family will always support u .Treasure ur love.I have learn lot and lots from this seris.i don’t know the reason why u guys think is is stupid but it is not.
^Can’t Buy Me Love was a good series, not the best, but still good. The comedy was…ok…not the best in the world, but one of the best within tvb.No Regrets, however, has blown me away. I have never seen such a good TVB series, storyline, acting and visuals included. Dnt worry nr, i am ok with the tragedy and melodrama.
^^
Yes, in some ways i do agreed CBML does teach us a lot about family, love, and it was really a happy drama. But No Regrets was just more meaningful.. of how people can be there for each other, even if they’re not blood related. & i personally like heroic characters. (:
Hi, I have been reading all the comments here and it seems that everyone is only talking about Charmaine and Sheren. Why has no other candidates been considered? I actually didn’t mind Tavia’s acting in The Mysteries of Love and Teresa Mo in Someday. Do remember it is the Top 5 and not Top 2?
Maybe TVB should consider spliting categories like the US, Best Comedy Series and Best Drama Series, however, with the number of series that comes out every year, I wonder if there will be enough nominees to cover this. =)
@Jazzie, Yeah, you’re right. For the case of Drama & Best Actor only CBML & No Regrets and Moses Chan & Wayne Lai. Where are the rest of them.
Do agree too that the TV series to be split into Drama Series and Comedy series. Same goes for tha catagories for the actors and actresses for Drama & Comedy.
Lastly, it is obvious that TVB will make the award nite to be a series that wins the LION share of the awards. (Eg: HOG-2007, MR-2008, RB-2009).
@Jazzie
There will be enough nominees. With the current system, many actors won’t be able to get on the list. Even when people want to vote for them also cannot. I was really annoyed that Sammul was not available for voting in the Best Supporting Actor category for his first crossdressing role in ‘A Bride for a Ride’.
I also notice that TVB just put actors in whatever category they like according to the whims. Bosco Wong was nominated for Best Actor for his villain role in GTL (shouldn’t he be in Best Supporting Actor?). Experienced actress Mimi Lo who consistently gave good performances in all her roles was nominated for ‘Most Improved Actress’. IMHO, this is an insult to Mimi Lo.
Although I joined in the comments, I actually voted for neither. I voted for someone else in both Best Actor and Best Actress category.

I love Mimi Lo a lot, but this award to TVB is not an award to “newbies”, even more senior actors can get in. Ngo Ka Nin has been in the industry for a long time but when he somehow get public attention in Rosy Business, TVB give it to him.
Bosco’s character in Growing Through Life may have less screentime than Raymond Lam or Damien, but it’s quite a central character and held more weight than Cecilia Yip’s. Come at me and accuse me of bias since I admit I like him, but I watched the series twice and I think enough to hold an opinion. The same can be applied to Fala in Ghost Writer. She’s written as second lead but her character is prominent and is quite central to the storyline, thus enabling her to be nominated in Best Actress. One of Fala’s best character to date, apart from Moonlight Resonance which made me fell for her since.
I’m not participating at all in the voting this year. I’m not in the mood to celebrate with lousy TVB, at least until TVB start to churn out more quality production from the helm Tseung Kwan O.
@Masaharu
Can get it doesn’t mean it’s appropriate. Anyone can get in as long as TVB want to put him/her there. That’w why I said ‘TVB just put actors in whatever category they like according to the whims.’
Despite how appealing and important a villain is, he/she is still a supporting character unless the story revolved around him/her like in ‘Conscience’ and ‘Ambition’. I’m not targeting Bosco.I’m just using him as an example. Last year, I also disagree with many MR’s nominees who got into Best Actor/Actress category.
I still think it’s an insult to Mimi Lo to be nominated for ‘Most Improved’ when she’s already good and has been consistently good, just like Johnson Li being nominated for Most Improved last year. But, congrats to her anyway. Being nominated and having a shot at any award is still better than no nomination.
Btw, Ngo Ka Nin did show significant improvement in acting in that year. Even between ‘Sweetness of Salt’ and ‘Rosy Business’, you can see his improvement (his acting was better in RB even though I like his Salt character more).
Hmm, maybe TVB’s definition of ‘Most Improved’ is most improved in popularity and not in skills.
I agree with what Funn said once. She said Sonija should be nominated in ‘Most Improved’ because she did improve from good awful acting to decent acting. But, Sonija’s status was different. So, she was never nominated in that category.
Hmm, maybe TVB’s definition of ‘Most Improved’ is most improved in popularity and not in skills.
Maybe you just hit the bull’s eye :).
“Hmm, maybe TVB’s definition of ‘Most Improved’ is most improved in popularity and not in skills.”
Probably true. Or maybe it is most improved in shoe polishing skills.
I don’t understand the most improved too. Because if I have my way a lot of so called veterans will be in this category. Maybe TVB can tweak the award names to “Best Newcomer” and limit that to people who are newcomers for 5 years max.
And maybe follow Singapore and create Top 10 favourite actors/actresses and just give an award to each of them.
Then Top 5 most favourite veterans for those 20 years or more in the business.
For most improved, limit those to actors or actresses that to them improved doesn’t matter the time limit. Let’s face it; you can be 50 years in the business but you’re lousy, you’re lousy. I agree it might offend some very senior actors but I feel this is one category that sometimes do get it right. Well sometimes, not all the time. I am neutral about Mimi Lo.
The fact is being recognised in any category means only 1 thing; TVB recognises your existence. So those in most improved usually have better opportunities, because it is like you’re noticed.
And I have also always said, all these Best this and Best that is just crap. Most Favourite is the more appropriate term.
Actually they do have Favorite top 10 right? For characters if I remember?
Oh, interesting analysis on when one is supporting and one is a lead actor. It is difficult sometimes in a series to judge who is in what capacity. But just because a role is given more prominence or more screentime or more lines does not make that role a leading character. Villains always get the most screentime in TVB series and opportunity for actors to flesh out their acting but doesn’t make them the leading character.
For example, it is difficult if there are 2 leading characters like BTROC which I am watching right now but I would think Sam Ho is the leading character therefore Charmaine the lead and Tavia the supporting. Same goes for other series.
Truth is even Hollywood couldn’t decide. They will arbitrarily point to a character in a movie as lead, the other a supporting as long as there is an opportunity to win. So if the competition is stiff in leading actress, better put forward s stronger candidate for supporting actress to ensure a win.
But in TVB it doesn’t work this way since they control the list, the winner all from the same company etc. So it is in the end a matter of preference and some jockeying by respective managers.
“Maybe TVB can tweak the award names to “Best Newcomer” and limit that to people who are newcomers for 5 years max.
And maybe follow Singapore and create Top 10 favourite actors/actresses and just give an award to each of them.
Then Top 5 most favourite veterans for those 20 years or more in the business.”
I really like that idea! I think TVB shoudl try and be more fair as all actors/actresses put their heart into doing better everytime they get a role. So having a Top 10 favourite actor/actress award would be great!
I also love the idea to have an award for veterans. Not an award only when they have passed or is sick. Appreciate their performances when they are able and award them to show our appreciation. Without the veterans, alot of shows would not be as popular.
It seems to me that TVB is bringing back alot of old-timers who have left TVB but has agreed to come back. Like Liu On-Lai who’s acting as the 2nd sister in Show me the happy. I remember her so clearly as the girl who chopped off Andy Lau’s arm in Return of Condor Heroes…just love the classics!
Gone abit off-track…anywayz, I think it’s time TVB review the types of awards they have. They should encourage acting skills as well as popularity. I would watch a cast of veterans than a cast of bimbos/himbos with no acting capability any day.
BTW, are they going to have the Jade Solid Gold Awards this year? Anyone know?
“Actually they do have Favorite top 10 right? For characters if I remember?”
Funn, the awards that you mentioned were given during the TVB Gala till 2005.
The TVB Award Presentation started in 2006.
I’m afraid I’m still new to all this but I do enjoy all the opinions and comments made by you. I’m a great fan of most of the actors and actresses of Wah Lai Toi and so take great interest in what’s happening.Tomorrow is the great day and all are waiting for the ‘moment of truth’!
