Charmaine Sheh Dual Roles on “Memories Beyond Horizon”

TVB and Youku collaboration, Memories Beyond Horizon <無限超越班>, is a new variety show featuring Hong Kong’s biggest celebrities. Andy Lau (劉德華), Tony Leung (梁朝偉), Louis Koo (古天樂), Sean Lau (劉青雲), and Kara Hui (惠英紅) will participate as mentors, while Charmaine Sheh will be both a mentor and program manager with behind-the-scenes responsibilities.

The show will see a group of actors being trained on acting skills and receiving feedback from esteemed and well-established veteran actors. In recent promotional photos, Fiona Sit (薛凱琪), Aarif Rahman (李治廷), Timmy Xu (許魏洲), Li Yitong (李一桐), and Liu Yaowen (劉耀文) will be a part of the program’s lineup. To test their acting skills, the participating artistes will be tasked with reenacting scenes from classic dramas, such as The Legendary Ranger (原振俠), The Legend of the Condor Heroes (射鵰英雄傳), War and Beauty (金枝慾孽), Beyond the Realm of Conscience (宮心計), Triumph in the Skies (衝上雲霄), and Line Walker (使徒行者).

Although Charmaine returned to Hong Kong to spend time with her mother for the holidays, filming obligations for Memories Beyond Horizon forced her to return to China earlier than planned. When asked for her thoughts regarding the project, Charmaine expressed, “I am very happy to be able to revisit many of Hong Kong’s classic productions. I will be a mentor and design programming content to test the students’ acting skills. I will also take part in acting on the show.”

Many notable stars such as Sheren Tang (鄧萃雯), Maggie Cheung (張可頤), Benz Hui (許紹雄), Angie Chiu (趙雅芝), and Kent Tong (湯鎮業) appeared as guests in the first episode, which aired on December 17.

In the episode, Fiona expressed her desire to diversify her acting portfolio. As one of the show’s mentors, Kara did not hold back in providing feedback and chastised Fiona for being limited due to “looking like a porcelain doll at the age of 40.” On the awkward exchange, Charmaine commented, “Every mentor has their own style. Since I also have the role as program manager, it is my responsibility to try and balance out the relationship between students and their mentors.”

  1. Kara is so harsh but so effing real. Respect.

Fiona does look like a porcelain doll, beautiful but not long lasting if she can’t expand her image to other not so pretty roles and acting range.

The one person I do feel bad for is Shen Yue. Girl had a panic attack and couldn’t act when she needed to, but Kara did not hold back on her comments about that. I want her to teach how to be thick-skinned though, and not just telling someone to be thick-skinned. It’s no different than someone telling you to get a job, but not coaching you on how to get said job

    1. I was watching ep 1 last night, I remember hearing a comment on Shen Yue have a face that is suited to earn money in the acting industry for a long time… I keep looking at her, she is very cute and have big eyes etc…but to be honest, I dont see her lasting long in this industry. After so many years, her acting is still not great. How much longer can a young girl get cast in Girly gal role?
I really wish to see some of these girl with more natural or no make up…. Shen Yue just added unnatural 5yrs to her little face..

      1. @Coralie Derek told her to give an impromptu performance of someone who didn’t think too highly of the panel. Later Derek did try to help more, suggesting for her to walk out to complete performance while Kara demonstrated a character pleading with the director for another chance but she just stood there then said she did not want to continue the performance because she felt that she didn’t have the ability. While appreciating her willingness to acknowledge her shortcoming, it also feels that she is someone who gives up easily without trying. She probably never needed to go through audition in her career.

      2. @Hohliu the C-entertainment does not lack actresses like her to play school girl or young lady out in their first job in some romantic drama. She isn’t the prettiest nor with good acting so it will not be long before another younger actress taking those roles. Not everyone can be Yang Yang with little acting skills but still remain highly popular.

      3. @hohliu Maybe they meant it in the sense that her face is memorable? I feel like she has a pretty unique face compared to all the plastic beauties in the entertainment industry nowadays. I agree her acting is still pretty terrible for someone who’s been around 6+ years. The fact that she couldn’t even present herself was kind of disappointing. I commend her for coming on the show even though it scares her so much though.

For the other participants, I really like Guo Xiaoting. I hope this variety show helps propel her career. Also, does anyone get the feeling that they’re basically trolling Zhao Yingzi? Hanxue isn’t even a participant but Maggie randomly asked her to play the role instead. I get that Zhao Yingzi comes off over confident and a bit oblivious, but it still seems kind of mean to do that. Her excuse for asking Han Xue wasn’t even convincing. It feels scripted and purposefully just trying to make a point about opportunities are hard to come by or to play up the drama.

      4. @lilseemonster I agree, she has a very natural and pretty face… But whoever that style her that day needs to be fired. Her makeup is too heavy and dressing is just awful. I really think she is out of her depth in this industry.. She knows she is just not good enough thus she does not have confidence in herself.

      5. @BearBear she was having a panic attack, though. I would give her a break for that reason. Usually when someone has a panic attack, they can’t pull themselves together quick enough to do what’s asked of them. So I think that’s understandable.

  2. Can’t decide if I have enjoyed this tv show – what is Han Xue’s role? She doesn’t seem to have the need to compete for an acting role yet she is given one in War and Beauty. It will be understandably if in the later episodes, there are more participants than available roles and only the better ones get the roles through auditions but this is only round one and without a proper audition. Zhao Yingzi may not be likeable but the programme concept in Epi 1 is strange not to let her play any role. What learning outcome are they trying to achieve?
Feel bad for Paul Che. If it was Tony Leung or Andy Lau as the mentor of The Deer and the Cauldron, would Fan Shiqi insist on Line Walker? Maybe, maybe not but it would have been highly unlikely not to have any of the male artists wanting to be play a role in it. They were being so practical for obvious reasons. (Seems like Paul Che has left the programme, at least based on the latest speculations).
Who is the stylist for female participants’ fashion? They need to get a new one.

    1. Gosh, the stylist is so Bad!!!! I am surprised by this quality of standard HK production company provided for this show. I watched 1 eps for curiosity… but will not continue. I really do not rate Jacky Chan. Thus watching him is just awkward for me.
