Charmaine Sheh is the Hot Favorite to Win Best Actress
Charmaine Sheh Si Man, Fala Chen, and Kara Hui Ying Hung appeared at a celebratory event for TVB series, Can’t Buy Me Love <公主嫁到>. The series averaged ratings of thirty-three points last week, peaking at thirty-eight points. More than 2.3 million viewers watched the show. Year-to-date,Can’t Buy Me is the series with the highest average ratings.
In 2006, Charmaine won two television awards, including the TVB Best Actress Award. This year, the popularity of Can’t Buy Me Love places Charmaine as one of the top favorites to win the Best Actress Award again. Since there were other series to be aired for the remainder of the year, Charmaine said it was too early to predict the results. For the awards, she will deal with what comes naturally. The most important thing was that the audience enjoyed her performance in Can’t Buy Me Love.
In the aftermath of the Hong Kong tourists’ deaths in the Philippines , Charmaine realized that health and happiness were the most important things in life. She did not receive any notice regarding Stephen Chan Chi Wan’s corruption case. She had Mr. Chan in her heart but did not contact him recently.

Jayne: TVB prefers to give the awards to artists in highly rated shows. I think Charmaine has a good chance to win the Best Actress Award this year! Don’t think TVB will give the award to Sheren again so soon. Unless TVB gives the award to Jessica Hsuan, which I don’t think will happen either. Jessica is still favored by TVB producers, but she probably prioritizes her personal life over work now.
Jessica probably won’t let an award ruin her life. She’s so happy these days and it’s reflected in her acting.
Charmaine winning again won’t be such a bad idea. She’s more deserving for Can’t Buy My Love than the previous time she won.
I don’t see a true contender this year. Let’s see how Sheren will do when her series gets aired.
sorry to charmaine’s fans but she did not deserved to win the award again for this year. she is over-acting in CBML …well i know this statement will raise the ire of her fans and i am sorry. but the truth is that she over-acts in CBML..sadly this year, as of now, no TVB actresses are worthy winner. let’s see how No Regrets will turn out to be…
I hope not. May the best actress win. But not charmaine, not yet, not now. Anyway she is rumoured to win every single year so I take this very lightly. Not like TVB can’t name 4 other actresses right?
Funn, you crack me up with the last sentence. I would prefer Kara Hui to be the front-runner this time. Kara has been on the award sweeping wagon. Hope TVB Award will be her lucky 8,9 or 10 award.
I’m a Charmaine fan, honestly I would say NO! not this time.
But, Kara did not play any lead role in TVB series. She can’t really run for Best Actress.
I wonder if Elena Kong will get Best Supporting Actress for her role as Angela Auntie.
Please don’t give Elena the ‘Most Improved Actress’ award. That would be an insult to this actress who has been giving out great performance consistently since her days in ATV.
A supporting Actress for Kara.
Have to agree with James, no sorry Charmaine does not deserve to win the Best Actress award again!! she didnt even deserve to win 2 awards last time!!!
Really hard to say who wins actually. Lets just wait and see 🙂
good god no, maybe next or two years… she still has chance, ugh.
IMO, The contenders are…
Tavia Yeung, Charmine Sheh, Linda Chung… It maybe a two horse race.
Longshot: Christine Ng, Myolie Wu, Teresa Mo, Kate Tsui
Very longshot: Susan Tse, Kara Hui, Maggie Siu, Cecilia Yip
Mostly likely not going to win again: Jessica Husan, Maggie Cheung, Sheren Tang, Ada Choi, Flora Chan, Michelle Yim, Louise Lee, Esther Kwan.
“She had Mr. Chan in her heart but did not contact him recently”…. she probably ignore the whole funk’d up Stephen Chan scandal….
Hi, I’m new here. I don’t see the rational and fairness in how the award is based on. So, in a nutshell, if a particular actress/actor was phenomenal in a series but series bombed in ratings, then they will most likely not get the award. Instead it is awarded to a subpar actress/actor (I mean any actress/actor–not naming anyone in particular)of a series with great ratings. That makes no sense to me. How does that make that actress/actor the best actress/actor? This is the dumbest way to based an award on. Why should these actors/actresses even bother to improve anyway?
^Blame TVB who created it.
If Charmaine does win, it is because of the good reception from the audience, the series’ high ratings, and lack of better competition. I can’t really think of any actresses that stood out in their performance this year, so she has a good chance. I’m sure Sheren will not disappoint, but I doubt she will given the award 2 years in a row. Jessica has quite a few series this year so I think she will definitely get nominated. Chances of winning are slim, though. I doubt TVB will give the awards to Fala, Linda, or Kate. That would be an insult to the other veteran actresses.
As for Elena Kong, I’ve always liked her performances, but I doubt she would get most improved, maybe better chances of getting best supporting actresses. My vote this year for most improved would be Natalie Tong (although I wouldn’t mind Selena Li either). And I think Most improved male actor will be Raymond Wong. He has had so much exposure to year and I think TVB is starting to heavily promote him. I think getting this award will be one of the first steps.

This is because the awards are based on voting. 1/3 of the votes are from the viewers. More people see, more people know and more people vote. The other 2/3 are
1/3 = producers and directors (I don’t know whether actors are under this category or under audience)
1/3 = high executives
TVB is throwing weight around. Charmaine’s name and her series has been used time and time again to promote other up and coming actresses. Last year’s TVB Award was very obvious.
God, I hope TVB gives awards to those who DESERVE to win, not because of popularity. They give out a popularity award for a reason.
^ Very true. What a joke if Charmaine and Moses gets it this year because CBML is popular. It should be because of acting not because of whose series got highest ratings.
I hope Linda and Kate don’t get nominated. That’s an insult to the deserving actresses.
Charmaine has this pretty much wrapped up in the bag, she basically has no competition! The 2010 series has been very disappointing m/b up until this point.
I really hope that they don’t waste the award and give it to Jessica b/c that will be a crime and tragic. You have to give it to someone that you can promote and has value to your company.
Well, I wouldn’t say that. There are still a couple more months until the awards ceremony. Who knows, there might actually be some good series still in store, no matter how small that possibily might be..I guess we will just have to wait and see.

Jessica shouldn’t get the award not because she has no promotion value but because her acting has gone downhill. It’s a shame that her acting is getting worse with time. She used to be good in DIF4.
come on, charmaine is not even in the same league as sheren. charmaine’s role in cbml does not require any difficult acting skills. any other actress could have done it, and probably done it much better. and i agree with james, there’s too much over-acting from charmaine.
gallen lo won best actor in 1997 and 1998 consecutively, and sheren herself won the best supporting actress in 2003 and 2004 (though the 2004 award was totally an insult!). if sheren manages to pull off a brilliant performance in no regrets, why can’t she win best actress again, just because she just won it last year? i hope tvb is not that back-ward in their thinking now.
@emily
charmaine’s role in cbml does not require any difficult acting skills.
^^Actually, comedy is a very difficult genre for many actors to grasp. I seem to recall many pro-actors claim that to make viewers laugh is much harder than trying to make viewers cry.
That said, I agree with you that Sheren pwns Charmaine lol
Charmaine stands a good chance because she’s involved herself in big productions, plus, most importantly, she is a contracted TVB actress… with this point, actresses like Maggie, Esther & Jessica are very unlikely to be the ones holding up that trophy on the night.
But truth to be told, it’s the Best Actor Award that is more exciting.
P.S. Kara Hui doesn’t need a TVB Award.
She’s already got a HKF Academy statue under her belt 😉
I heard Kara Hui signed a contract with TVB 1-2 months ago. Will she get Best Supporting Actress?
it’s one thing to make the audience laugh. but over-doing it will make the audience cringe instead. charmaine was good in you’re hired. dunno what happened to her here. forwarded a lot of scenes with her and moses inside.
and yes, agree. kara doesn’t need any tvb award anymore. she’s movie queen, and is way beyond tvb. it’s heart-warming to think that she is still willing to film tvb dramas though. 🙂
I think the cast in ‘Beauty Knows No Pain’ act well. Too bad it does not garner high ratings.

Emily, It is not easy to act in a comedy. Through if they see hilarious stuff they have to hold their laughter. I wonder have you watched FRIENDS & etcs. If you haven’t I suggest you give it a try. You can judge for yourself.
if the comedy is SLAPSTICK comedy, you tell me, does it require any difficult skills? i shall be blunt here – in cbml, they acted as if they were fooling around all the time. does that require any difficult skills? to be able to make ppl laugh without making the audience cringe (and roll eyes) and in the process, not making themselves look silly – that’s what requires skill (take eg. you’re hired)
also, charmaine has acted in comedies before with good results, therefore i expected more from her. i don’t deny she was good in you’re hired though. her acting in cmbl probably goes to show that she’s not consistant in her performances.
never mind. let me blame the script, shall i?
Emily, whatever ok. Drop the case. No big deal anyway. After all comedy are for laughter.
Agree with ppl on top that Charmaine does not deserve to win Best Actress again… CBML is not a good comedy at all… She will be lambasted if she wins it. Let the most deserving actress win.
I read in local papers Sharon Chan was very happy at praises for her performance in CBML. Maybe she will win most improved? Anyway thanks to the local papers I now know her ending.
In defence of Rach to which I agree comedy is very hard and slapstick comedy without looking rehearsed and deliberate is even harder which is why CBML in my opinion is the example how NOT to do slapstick comedy. Comediens generally are very good actors/singers/entertainers. In CBML I just see a bunch of struggling actors whose acting in dramas are already debatable struggling to be funny and fell flat and the whole production seems more like a rehearsal to me. The only reason Charmaine acted in comedies (and I don’t think there are many at all) with good results (and I will debate that) is because look at her co-star, the person next to her. That person would have compensated for her inadequacies by taking away attention from her. It is about delivery, timing and the ultimate punch! I am just surprised Moses got more complaints. I always thought he would do well in comedies.
But yes do blame the script. With awful material even the best actors would falter.
Funn, have to watched Who’s Line Is It Anyway hosted by Drew Carey and saturday Night Live? Those are even harder to act coz it is impromptu and they are live in front of audience. No retakes or whatever.
Serious actors do find it hard to act in comedies. It is not the case for Alec Baldwin who was once upon a time acted in some family saga series.
It depends on the script & how well you carry the role without looking GOFFY! Period.
Rach, I am a big fan of Whose Line Is It Anyway, both US and UK version. Or even practised ones like SNL so I get your meaning. TVB had that one. EYT remember? I don’t think that if they revive EYT now it would be any good. They lack talent in these. Can’t ask the 3 “gods” to do EYT alone. Which is why it is very for TVB to revive EYT to train the younger ones, teach them how to be on their feet thinking of witty lines and stuff.
well it’s not like she cares if she gets it or not. This award is so political that some of previous winners did not deserve it! We’ll see who TVB decides to give it to, i’m sure it’s always a surprise
I read in local papers Sharon Chan was very happy at praises for her performance in CBML. Maybe she will win most improved?
^^I’m so glad the girl is getting some love! Sharon is one of the few likable girls on this series. I adore all her scenes w/ Edwin. They’re brilliant together xD
Hope Sharon does pick up Most Improved Female. Most Improved Male should go to Raymond Wong me thinks ;O
I think Raymond Wong will jump straight to most favourite actor.
I would go as far to say that he deserves Best Actor absolutely so far this year.
But I don’t think they will award it to him, esp given that someone like Raymond Lam hasn’t picked one up himself yet. In which case, I’d be putting my money on Raymond Wong to more likely to get Most Improved 🙂
Jicks, agree that TVB is not ready to give Raymond Wong the top prize yet. I think this year, Raymond Lam really started out the year with a bang. However GWL didn’t pull the necessary ratings. Nevertheless, Raymond Lam’s popular vote will probably still be high.
After reading the list of series that will air b4 the awards, I’ll have to say that I don’t see a major competition vs Charmaine. Sheren is an amzing actress w/ tremendous acting skills but I don’t think she has a contract w/ TVB, if she does, give it to her if not, then no point of putting her over.
The majoirty of the series this year has been very disappointing, TVB has done a very poor job of organizing which series to air.
I really support promoting young artists but can’t really happen this year. But I can see Ray Lam winning the favourite actor again and Linda winning the supporting actress in Watchdog’s Tale.
I am just hoping that for the beginning of 2011, TVB won’t repeat their mistake of organizing series like what they did in 2009 & 2010.
A.M. Do you notice the ratings of those series are stagnant too. Eg: This series has point of …. and peak at …… During the weeks of airing you can see the same results. The points are going no where.
Any series that has surpass 40 over points this year? So far none as at todate.
I know heh, TVB usually air smaller series at the beginning of the year and then air a big one b4 the awards ceremony. I really don’t like it.
I have a feeling that No Regrets or Rosy Business 2 will reach over 40pts
A.M. What you say is regarding the sequence of airing TVB series is very true. Playing favoratism I suppose.
Perhaps TVB could try the style on how the series in USA are being aired. Have the spring, summer, auturm & winter series release. :p
Do you read the new articles about the competition between Charmaine and Kara this year? One of two will win. Tavia is out of list. Fala is the hottest winner for 我最喜愛女角色. Linda is the hottest winner for 女配角.
How can there be competition between Charmaine and Kara? Kara hasn’t played any lead roles in TVB series. If there’s competition, it would be between Linda and Kara for ‘Best Supporting Actress’.
My cards will be for Kara for Supporting Actress. Never count out No Regrets which will be airing on 18 October.
Most possibility Fala will be in the list for Best Actress for her role in Ghost Writer.
They say Kara is nominated with FOS.
aren’t those rumours stirred up by the gossip magazines? how can you ppl be so naive as to really believe all these?! nothing is confirmed until tvb releases the nomination list. by then, you will know who got in for which category and whatnots.
rmb, the hk media is NOTORIOUS for stirring up untrue rumours, which is probably why they get sued all the time.
Actually HK media may be notorious but they’re usually about 90% right even if unconfirmed until the end.
I don’t think Char deserve to win, her acting skills is not that good, But I have to admitted she marketing herself well,,,
Sheren— why can’t she win again?
Maggie Cheung— really good job in “BKNPain”
Kara Hui—- way too good
Jessica— downhill
Elena Kong– really good job in Auntie Angela
I support ,,, SHEREN, KARA and MAGGIE CHEUNG..
