“Chinese Restaurant” Season 3 Airs to Immense Popularity
Mainland variety show Chinese Restaurant <中餐厅> is one of the most watched shows since its first release in 2017. Returning with a third season this summer, the cast was tasked to open a restaurant in France. Significant changes were made to its cast, rules, menu and style. Despite these changes, viewership ratings are still consistently high and is even breaking records with its first episode generating 100 million clicks.
TFBoys’ leader Karry Wang (王俊凯) is the only one who has returned from season two, while Huang Xiaoming (黄晓明) has returned as a store manager from season one. Besides these two experienced members, the new cast features popular actress Andy Yang (杨紫), Golden Horse Best Actress winner Qin Hailu (秦海璐), and a professional chef.
What may seem like a smooth ride with two experienced members was cut short when they were notified that their budget is zero. This meant they had to find ways to earn money to buy ingredients. Though they had considered exchanging the things they’ve brought with the locals for some money, this task had many viewers displeased. They criticized that the cast’s fundraising actions made Chinese people appear greedy and cheap, while Westerners look kind and generous.
In addition, the cast was also criticized during this process for their attitude and personalities. Hailu appeared to be too serious and brusque with Xiaoming and the chef, and her words were constantly negative. The chef was pointed out for being egoistic and not discussing matters with others before making decisions. Xiaoming also got noted for his soft personality that had him being pushed aside by Hailu’s strong opinions at times.
Although the older members were criticized, the younger cast Karry and Andy received many praises for their high EQ, good looks, performance, and efforts to liven the atmosphere.
