Daniel Wu’s Monster Sushi Owes Tax Arrears?

Above: Daniel Wu is a self-professed “bad boy”.

It was reported that Daniel Wu’s (吳彥祖) restaurant, Monster Sushi, owed tax arrears of 119,000, which has been filed with the Inland Revenue Department with the District Court. The tax arrears were in profits and provisional taxes.

In 2008, Daniel Wu, director Tony Chan (陳國輝), and Sushi One Group Limited set up their first branch of Monster Sushi at the Langham Place mall in Mongkok. Daniel did not have previous experience in managing a business, but he invested in the restaurant due to his love of sushi and Japanese culture. Over the next five years, more branches of Monster Sushi were opened in Causeway Bay and Tsim Sha Tsui.

When the Hong Kong paparazzi visited Monster Sushi at the Mongkok branch, the restaurant’s business was brisk even on a weekday evening. There was even a long queue of customers waiting outside the shop. The branch manager, Jim, shared that business has always been good. Staff has always been promptly paid their wages.

Daniel and his wife, Lisa S., are currently enjoying their second home in South Africa, where the couple got married in 2010. The couple  decided to take a vacation before the birth of their first baby in June.

Though Daniel is not in Hong Kong to respond to the queries over Monster Sushi’s reported tax arrears, his manager, Miss Leung said, “Being a shareholder, Daniel will get to the bottom of the matter and handle the situation accordingly.”

  1. Lol, movie stars.
Hire a damn accountant for god’s sakes.

    1. But seriously though if you asked me what really happened, someone somewhere probably embezzled cash from the accounts. Someone’s going to jail for tax fraud.

  2. The image used totally threw me off. I honestly thought he was really arrested.

  3. Definitely a misleading picture to grab the casual viewer to read on. Embezzling or mismanagement by partners is more probable as Daniel is more of an actor than a business mogul. His partners are capitalizing on his fame and name recognition to get wealthy. I surmise Daniel is not a hands-on owner as he has a family to raise and his acting career thus probably trusting his partners to do the right thing. Whoever is handling the restaurants cash receipts should also be the same person paying the vendors thus also knowledgeable on when to pay taxes and other bills. I am not sure if this tax arrear story is to shed doubt on Daniel’s financial situation and that he is insolvent or spending beyond his means due to his lifestyle and current family situation.
