Dayo Wong and Fala Chen to Star in New Play “Skylight” This Summer
Fala Chen (陳法拉) will make her stage debut this summer in Skylight, an adaptation of the 1995 English play of the same name written by dramatist David Hare. This will be Fala’s first acting appearance in Hong Kong after taking her leave to attend New York’s Juilliard School two years ago.
Fala will play Kyra, a school teacher who has an affair with wealthy businessman Tom, portrayed by Dayo Wong (黃子華). Skylight, known in Chinese as “Ex” or “Former Lover” <前度>, will be playing for 18 shows at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts starting July 1. Tickets will officially go on sale on May 18.
Fala promoted the play on her Sina Weibo, writing, “Left without a word three years ago… let’s finish this on stage once and for all tonight.”
Skylight centers on wealthy businessman Tom who, while mourning for his dead wife, comes across his ex-lover Kyra. It turns out that Kyra used to live with his family as their domestic helper and had an affair with Tom. Feeling guilty for coming in between Tom and his wife, Kyra left the family without a word. Three years later, Tom and Kyra meet again. Tom wants to get back together with Kyra, but they realize that it is impossible to rekindle their relationship.
The original play, which debuted in the West End at the Cottesloe Theatre in 1995 and Broadway in 1996, won the Laurence Olivier Award for Play of the Year. A new production directed by Stephen Daldry was revived in 2014, and transferred to Broadway the following year. It received seven nominations at the Tony Awards, winning Best Revival of a Play.
