“Despacito” Mandarin Version Featuring JJ Lin
Since its release last year, Puerto Rican singer Luis Fonsi‘s catchy reggaeton-pop song “Despacito” has topped charts in 47 countries. Hoping to push his song to new heights in Asia, Luis invited JJ Lin (林俊傑) to collaborate in a new Mandarin version, which was released last week.
The Mandarin lyrics were modified to be less explicit than the original Spanish version, which spoke of a sexual relationship.
JJ had a mutual friend with Luis who introduced them. Although they had discussed to create an original song together, the pair finally decided to release a Mandarin version of “Despacito” due to its popularity. JJ said, “Music is a fun way to break boundaries. This collaboration set up a cultural bridge.”
