Despite 15 Years of Experience, Aaron Yan Still Doubts Himself
Though it was Fahrenheit (飛輪海) that had pushed Aaron Yan (炎亞綸) to fame, the 33-year-old actually made his debut as an actor. In 2004, he debuted his first television appearance as a teen milkman for the Taiwanese drama I Love My Wife <安室愛美惠>, as a precursor for his bigger debut: being the lead singer of Fahrenheit.
It has now been 15 years since Aaron’s debut in the television drama. Though regarded as an all-kill idol, the 33-year-old still believes that he has a lot left to learn about acting. He has the experience, but he questions his own abilities, always asking himself if he is suitable to be an actor.
When the Chinese program Everybody Stand By <演員請就位> offered Aaron a spot on their show, he immediately took the offer. He wanted to use this opportunity to showcase his abilities, for audiences to acknowledge that he is not only an idol, but also an actor.
It was the 2005 Taiwanese drama KO One <終極一班>, which he starred alongside his bandmates Jiro Wang (汪東城) and Calvin Chen (辰亦儒), that brought Aaron fame overnight. Other dramas that had shot Aaron to immense popularity included 2013’s Just You <就是要你愛上我>, 2014’s Fall in Love with Me <愛上兩個我>, and 2016’s Refresh Man <後菜鳥的燦爛時代>. He was known as Taiwan’s Number One Brother of Idol Dramas, but he has since changed his direction, perhaps due to his age. The 33-year-old is moving away from idol romances to more mature genres, such as the 2019 Chinese drama Please Give Me a Pair of Wings <請賜我一雙翅膀>, a mystery series about a private investigator living in pre-World War China.
Despite 15 years of experience, Aaron still questions himself about his skills. He admits that he doesn’t feel confident, sharing on Weibo, “You may ask me that since I’ve had so many years of experience, I am probably confident. But honestly, I don’t! I am always questioning about my own attitude towards acting. I am always asking myself if I even understood what acting is, even to the point of wondering if I am suitable to be an actor.”
But it was exactly because of his lack of confident that had pushed Aaron to agree to take part in Everybody Stand By. He said, “I cannot allow myself to step back and give up. I need to use this stage to take in more experience. I don’t care about the criticism. To become an actor I have to continue to walk forward. Be invested, and enjoy it.”
Other stars that will take part in Everybody Stand By include Gillian Chung (鍾欣潼), Ming Dao (明道), Sandrine Pinna (張榕容), Jim Yu (于小彤), and more.
