Donnie Yen Returns for “Ip Man 5”

Although Donnie Yen (甄子丹) loves embracing new challenges, he will be resuming his iconic role of Ip Man (葉問) in the fifth installment of the global hit franchise!

Released in 2019, Ip Man 4: The Finale (葉問 4) was touted as the final movie in the franchise, as Donnie’s character even died. Because of the ending, many are curious as to how they will revive the film’s main character and produce a believable and well-received fifth installment.

Raymond Wong (黃百鳴), who is the primary investor and producer of Ip Man 5, explained the reasoning behind the decision to continue the franchise. “When I met with international film studios in the past few years, everyone would ask whether we would make another installment of Ip Man. Since the past four installments have been so well-received, I reached out to Donnie to discuss the possibility of filming another movie to commemorate its 15th anniversary. Donnie and I agreed that we do not want things to be repeated. It will need a new approach, and bring something new and fresh to the audience. That is why we waited until the script is completed before announcing this to the public.”

In addition to Ip Man 5, Donnie will also be taking part in Misjudgement <誤判> and Flash Point 2 (導火綫 2). The first movie, which was released in 2007, starred Donnie, Louis Koo (古天樂), and Fan Bingbing (范冰冰). On whether the original cast will return, Donnie expertly avoided the question and merely explained the reason for filming a sequel, “I have always hoped to continue challenging my limits in Chinese action movies. In Flash Point, the choregraphed mixed martial arts fight sequences were highly discussed and well-received. A lot of people would send me video shorts, and ask how I came up with some of the choreographed moves.” It was this continued interest that led to his desire to make a sequel nearly 16 years after the first movie.

  1. Ip Man 5 will most likely be set before part 1. Wouldn’t make sense otherwise.

Misjudgement and Flash Point: Resurgence sounds more promising though. Donnie should stick to contemporary action movies for the remaining years he’s got left physically.
