Donnie Yen to Celebrate Lunar New Year with “Enter the Fat Dragon”
Fans of Ip Man <葉問> don’t have to wait long to see Donnie Yen (甄子丹) back in action. His action comedy Enter the Fat Dragon <肥龍過江> will soon be gracing theaters for Lunar New Year season, and is set for a wide release on January 23, 2020, two days before the new year.
Enter the Fat Dragon, directed by Wong Jing (王晶), stars Donnie as an overweight cop who leads an unlikely career in crimebusting. Starring alongside is Niki Chow (周勵淇), who plays his fiancé. Enter the Fat Dragon is Niki’s second collaboration with Donnie after 2017’s Chasing the Dragon <追龍>, in which she also played his wife.
“Last time my role was that of a gentle wife,” shared Niki. “This time I play someone who is aggressive and bad-tempered. We also had a choreographed fight scene together!”
Although her action scene with Donnie is very simple, Niki was concerned that her lack of training and fight background would injure Donnie and impede the filming process. “First off, I was afraid that I’ll hurt him. Second off, he’s a professional and I wasn’t sure if he’ll defend himself in a way that’ll throw me off. That’s why I literally had him practice with me multiple times before we started shooting it.”
Although Donnie promised to not do another kiss scene again out of respect for his wife Cissy Wang (汪詩詩), he does share one kiss with Niki in Enter the Fat Dragon, as Niki is a personal friend of Donnie and Cissy’s.
Enter the Fat Dragon also stars Teresa Mo (毛舜筠).
