Dylan Wang’s “Guardian of the Dafeng” Hit With Widespread Criticism

Starring Dylan Wang (王鶴棣) and Tian Xiwei (王鶴棣), Chinese drama Guardian of the Dafeng <大奉打更人> had high expectation of being one of this year’s top drama. However, despite its high production cost of 200 million Chinese yuan, the drama fails to find its footing and is being heavily criticized.

Many netizens were initially drawn to the fantasy drama by Dylan’s star power, but many netizens have since changed their tunes. Many netizens accuse Dylan’s of having poor acting skills and having excruciating long dialogues. While netizens feel Dylan is properly casted to bring out the character’s sense of righteousness, many netizens could not stand Dylan’s diction and would have preferred the drama to use dubbing.

Some netizens claim that Dylan’s popularity is overstated, and his success was attributed to the use of dubbing and his chemistry with Esther Yu (虞书欣) while filming Love Between Fairy and Devil <蒼蘭訣>. Without these elements, netizens claim that Guardian of the Dafeng will struggle by solely relying on Dylan’s star power.

As the female lead, Tian Xiwei’s character was also criticized for being nauseating sweet and silly. The netizens criticized the character for making illogical decisions and claim that they could not bear to watch her scenes.

While the drama is laced with suspense and investigation scenes, netizens are baffled by the flow of the drama. Netizens claim that villains die too easily and add little to the plot.

Guardian of Dafeng’s disappointing review has caught Tencent off guard. The Chinese streaming giant had wanted Guardian of Dafeng to match the popularity of 2019’s drama Joy of Life but the differences of the acting style between the male leads has made this challenging.

The drama’s lackluster review had not gone unnoticed by sponsors. When the drama was first broadcasted, it was reported that there were 11 sponsors. Unfortunately, the number has since dropped to 4 sponsors and the drama is at risk of suffering from significant financial loss.

  1. hm, not sure how anyone thought this could be in the same league as Joy of life. It is lacking in every aspect, from script to acting. Having said that it is a light and easy on eye fast content drama (it’ll be as fast forgotten as it is consumed) and it will reach reasonable viewership no doubt. Dylan is cute and widely loved but sorry he cannot be compared to ZRY in terms of acting skills at all (still dislike his altered visuals in JoL2 whatever has been done including weight loss).
