Edmond So’s Businesses Close, Wife Winnie Lau Steps Up to Help Financially

With the Covid-19 outbreak, many retail businesses in Hong Kong have been closing down. Owning four dance studios and three formal wear stores, Edmond So (蘇志威) saw a slowdown in his shops as well. Fortunately, his wife Winnie Lau (劉小慧) has been able to help with their family finances through her new online business.

In response to the outbreak, Edmond has already closed down his dance studio in the Central district and his suit stores in Kowloon to reduce financial costs. An insider familiar with Edmond’s situation shared why the shops were shut down, “When the outbreak just started, Edmond was already trying to make changes, in which he purchased over $100,000 HKD of face masks and sanitizers to let his customers use. But the Covid-19 outbreak couldn’t be controlled, and people didn’t want to come out to spend money and they avoided large gatherings.”

Though Edmond’s businesses are closing, his wife Winnie has become a successful entrepreneur. A former pop star in the 1990s, Winnie still has followers and experienced a surge in popularity last year when she taught fans online how to use egg butter to cure eczema. Recently, she opened her own online store to sell household goods, and engaged her customers with live streaming.

Managing her e-commerce business allowed Winnie to learn many things, including stocking the right merchandise, processing online payments, cash flow, and customer service. An insider shared, “She wanted to start this business a while ago, but just hadn’t looked into it. When the outbreak happened, she and her friend started the business in which they have received a lot of orders. Winnie shared that it was non-stop hard work, but she thinks it is worth it.”
