Elanne Kong’s Cat Hotel Boomed During the Pandemic
Elanne Kong (江伊晴) did something that everyone thought was stupid—she invested nearly six figures in a new cat hotel during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Everyone told her that she was crazy. In a time when travel industries are taking a big hit, it seems stupid to invest in a hotel business while everyone is at home. And for a brief moment, even Elanne herself had to admit that she was being crazy.
“No one’s going to travel during a pandemic,” said Elanne. “So why would they leave their cat at my hotel? Yet, my partner and I decided to invest more money and rent an even larger space.”
For a brief time, Elanne’s cat hotel did suffer financially. Net earnings per month dropped six figures to four figures, and Elanne had to pull out money from her own pocket to keep the business afloat.
“I did think about giving up,” she admitted. “But those thoughts only lasted a week, it’s because I realized that managing a business is kind of like managing yourself as a human being. There are times when there are lows, and times when there are highs. The best thing to do is to be prepared.”
After a difficult two months, Elanne finally reached the light at the end of a tunnel. “Recently, we’ve been having a surge of people who are either emigrating or have their homes under construction. They’re leaving their cats here for months at a time. Right now we’re housing 19 cats, and we’re still getting more bookings.”
Elanne, who married former singer Oscar Siu (蕭唯展) in 2018, spends a lot of time at work doing housekeeping chores, but when asked if she does that at home, Elanne laughed and said, “No! My husband does most of the cleaning and organizing at home. My only job is to take care of our ‘son’, the cat! I’m just the house trash!”
The 33-year-old also admitted that she and husband are planning to grow their family. “My husband loves kids. We do have friends giving us tips on how to get pregnant, but I really don’t like drinking traditional Chinese medicine!”
Elanne, who just recently signed with a new talent agency, is temporarily leaving her music career behind to focus on more TV work. She wants to focus her career in Hong Kong, as she does not want to leave her family for too long. Elanne said she will even reconsider doing intimate scenes on television and film.
“I’m find with holding hands and hugging, but when it comes to kissing, I’ll stick with camera angles. After all, I need to respect my husband, and we have elders in the family. I don’t want to run a mountain anymore for money.”
