Eric Tsang on Halting “Stars Academy”

Sharing about TVB’s brand new singing contest, which merges the concepts of previous successful contests, TVB general manager, Eric Tsang (曾志偉) urged the younger generation to boldly pursue their dreams!

Singing Contest Alumni Share Contest Experiences

Along with Midlife Sing and Shine <中年好聲音>, singing contest Stars Academy <聲夢傳奇> has attained considerable success in the history of TVB. Eric explained the decision to fix the eligibility criteria for the new contest at the 16 to 30-year-old range. “Many young people who’re interested have asked, “When will it be my turn?” Because Midlife is for Hong Kong contestants above 35…leaving a gap in those younger contestants. So now we opened up the platform for younger participants,”

Also appearing at the press conference were artistes William So (蘇永康), Patrick Tam (譚耀文) and Wilfred Lau (劉浩龍), who represent the alumni of TVB New Talent Singing Awards <新秀>; Hubert Wu (胡鴻鈞), James Ng (吳業坤) and Vivian Koo (谷婭溦) appeared for The Voice <巨聲>, while Archie Sin (冼靖峰), Rock Ho (何晉樂) and Aska Cheung (張馳豪) were there to share about their experience of taking part in Stars Academy.

Urges Wannabe Singers Not to Hesitate

Eric explained that the new program encompasses successful elements from the three successful talent shows from the past three to four decades, which has produced many stars, including Anita Mui (梅艷芳), William So and Andy Hui (許志安). “It is often a spur-of-the-moment decision for our contestants who have entered, so don’t hesitate, sign up immediately, you’re likely to miss the chance if you wait another year, since you might take on another job. Seize the chance to chase your dream while you’re young!”

Asked if he finds it a pity that Stars Academy ends its run after just two seasons, he raised the Miss Hong Kong pageant as an example, pointing out how some Miss Hong Kong finalists who move into showbiz attain massive popularity, while others eventually fall under the radar.

Younger Stars Academy Contestants Are “Hard to Control”

Despite having created stars the likes of Gigi Yim (炎明熹), Yumi Chung (鍾柔美), Chantel Yiu (姚焯菲), Felix Lam (林智樂) and Archie Sin, Eric acknowledged the challenge of running the contest, and explained why they raised the age criteria for the new singing contest, having learnt from previous seasons that contestants’ academics might be affected by taking part in the singing contest, plus some of Stars Academy alumni also chose to further their studies overseas on turning 18 despite showing potential.
