Fake Rumors Caused Christine Kuo to Develop Depressive Disorders

Christine Kuo (苟芸慧) has become the center of a series of controversial rumors once again. First, there was a false but very dramatic allegation that she seduced Michael Tse (謝天華) in his car last summer. The car-shaking, as it was known, turned out to be merely a scene from their TVB drama, Friendly Fire <法網狙擊>.

Christine was then rumored for being a popular candidate to go on paid dinner dates with business magnates, but she quickly rebuffed that case.

Last weekend, tabloids claimed that Christine and Matthew Ko (高鈞賢) have become an item as the two were seen interacting intimately at Stefan Wong (黃長興) and Peggy Siu’s wedding banquet. The pair was close together throughout the night, and Matthew was seen patting on Christine’s head several times, a gesture that usually indicates an intimate relationship.

Days later, rumors of Christine and Aaron Kwok (郭富城) surfaced. Tabloids alleged that Christine and Aaron had been secretly dating for five months, causing Lynn Hung (熊黛林) to inexplicably move out from Aaron’s home. Christine and Aaron’s rumors came to light when an alleged neighbor of Christine’s slipped to the tabloids that Aaron’s Porsche GT3 sports car was seen parked in front of Christine’s home.

Christine denied all rumors at a recent interview. The goddess laughed off the rumors, explaining that she has already learned how to care less about such nonsense claims.  Christine flatly said, “Aaron and I never contacted each other after shooting the commercial. I don’t even have his phone number. The most we would do is reply to each other on Weibo. The report said that his car was parked below my building, but that’s not even my building in the photo! As for Matthew, we are colleagues. It was just a pat on the head that night! There really is nothing between us!”

Christine added with a laugh, “My close friends know that the rumors aren’t true. They’re always with me so they know what’s going on. That’s why they didn’t even call me to talk about it when the reports were published. But it’s okay! The reports are nonsense so there is really nothing to talk about. I’ll treat them as promotions for A Great Way to Care 2 <仁心解碼II>! But if this continues, I don’t think any many would dare to come near me! I definitely won’t have any rumors then!”

Although Christine has learned to accept the consequences of being an artist, she admitted that she had struggled through similar negative reports in the past, referring to her car-shaking rumor with Michael Tse last summer. Christine said, “I was really sad then. Nothing happened. There was no car-shaking, nor did we do anything inappropriate, but the reports made it seem so real, as if it all really happened. The worst of it was that even my mother believed it, thinking that I was deceived! Because of that, I became really depressed. I didn’t want to eat, couldn’t sleep, and couldn’t stop crying. After shooting A Great Way to Care 2, I realized that I had all the symptoms of a depressive disorder at the time.”

If it wasn’t for Leanne Li (李亞男) and their group of friends in the circle, Christine believed that she would have developed major depression by now. “When I was unhappiest, Leanne was there with me every day to hear me out. My friends from Canada also came and stayed with me, to talk with me, so my condition slowly improved. I didn’t even need to see a doctor.

“Now, when I am unhappy, or when I encounter similar unfounded reports, I will avoid reading them. I’ve learned to let it be. I am always talking with Leanne now. She and Wong Cho Lam (王祖藍) often give me advice. I’ve become their light bulb!”

  1. Although I am not fond of her acting, I am happy that she overcame her depression and that she has friends to lean on. It’s sad to see how the HK media always make rumours up for some actresses and it could really lower one’s mood.

It is important and necessary to have someone who you can talk to.

  2. From the day I saw her crowned, I knew she was really pretty. But her accent really annoys the heck out of me. I don’t think she should work on her acting. I think she should learn how to speak proper cantonese. .there’s a reason why people aren’t fond of her. She’s getting all this unnecessary attention but all she can offer is her beauty. She cannot even connect with people in Cantonese so how can she act properly in Cantonese? If she fixed her accent then people won’t be so annoyed even if her acting is mediocre. But she makes it quite apparent with that horrible accent of hers.

    1. her bad acting doesn’t make her a bad person, nor does it warrant all this unneccesary jealousy on the attn she gets from her company. feel sorry for her lately. dont know why ppl have become so irrational. she pulls income for her company through many modelling jobs and endorsements, that is why she gets attn from TVB, her acting jobs arent as many as her outside gigs. they dont care about her accent for those jobs.

      1. her job as an actress is to act, not to be a good person. that’s just bonus. but she can’t act and speak right. that’s why many people can’t accept her as an actress. well i suppose some guys are too forgiving for christine just because she’s pretty.

      2. you need to differentiate between what is right and wrong regardless of what you think of her. christine isn’t taking anything from you or me by having a job to do, she’s just earning a meal like the rest, we openly discuss about her acting but we don’t go so far as to slander her down into her personal life, since we dont know how she lives.

if you beat another person down who only lived her life doing others no harm, then that shows you are mean-spirited, has nothing to do with us being forgiving of anything.

      3. First of all , let me clarify. I never said she was a bad person nor did I say she deserve all this jealousy and hate. What I was trying to say was that she should smarten up and realize other ways to make a name of herself. If she improves her Cantonese than automatically more acting gigs will come. Ya outside gigs don’t care about accent but she can’t depend on that nor model forever. But once her Cantonese has improved than she can automatically express better. You do know a lot of TVB artists that win awards or well received will see a rise in their income via advertisements. Companies will acknowledge their assets as solid actors or “improving rookies like Oscar Leung. I think a lot of the time she cannot fully express herself as an actress is cause she’s not comfortable speaking the language. It’s like a person who’s native tongue isn’t English. If they attempt to sing a soulful soul, because their enunciation is off, so will the connection.

    2. There are many ABCs in the entertainment industry who became very popular in spite of their ‘improper’ Cantonese. Kuo’s accent is just your excuse to belittle her.
It’s no secret that there are groups of malicious people who launch internet campaigns to smear certain actresses and actors.

    3. For the life of me I cannot figure out the narrow focus of the canto-language police who believe perfect’canto equal or is even more important than good acting skills and natural charisma.

I could only imagine if someone (in the West) would say the same thing about Jackie Chan’s flawed English.

      1. Comparing Jackie Chan with Christine or those that aren’t able to speak perfect Cantonese isn’t a good example.

Jackie Chan is a generally viewed as a comedic character in Hollywood, his accent plays a part to his characters and it works. How many other reputable actors/actresses in Hollywood has such a horrible accent like Christine? Also, you can check out other English based forums that has discussions about Jackie Chan’s acting and accent, their comments don’t fare much better than this website. Some even go as far as being overly racist.

      2. Arnold Schwartzeneggar, Antonio Banderra, Selma Hayak, Jean-Claude Van Dam, and the list of actors with accent in Hollywood goes on…

Be sure that Jackie Chan did not fake the accent in order to conform into his roles. But the key to my point is that despite that the majority of the Western audience did not embrace or dismiss him because of his accented English.

The championing of linguistic purity (dialectic purity in this case) is fraught with potential for xenophobia and at times, like you mentioned, can lead to racism.

      3. >For the life of me I cannot figure out the narrow focus of the canto-language police who believe perfect’canto equal or is even more important than good acting skills and natural charisma.

Hmmm…the circumstances are completely different. America is a multicultural country so Arnie et al. are exotic commodities.

If your Canto sucks because you’re actually from Taiwan/Mainland and you’re portraying a HK-born person who’s lived there their entire life then people are going to get on you for it because it’s unbelievable.

      4. “If your Canto sucks because you’re actually from Taiwan/Mainland and you’re portraying a HK-born person who’s lived there their entire life then people are going to get on you for it because it’s unbelievable.”

I guess much kudo to Takeshi, Brigid Lin and to some degree Nicky Wu who were able to succeed in HK despite the cards stacked up against them by the dialectic purists.

      5. @ Terminator

I have no problem with actresses who don’t speak perfect Canto. Like you, I don’t understand why people has such a narrowminded outlook. However, I do feel the state of Christine’s Canto is so bad that I often do not understand her. And that is a problem, since I also cannot read the Chinese subs. I also think because she struggles so much with the language, it has a negative impact on her acting too.

      6. Takeshi Kaneshiro is one of my idols. And not even in a homo way. He can speak 5 languages and as someone who wants to master as many languages as possible, I can certify that he’s a goddamn genius. And if I remember correctly you said something like “he fit into his roles as his age allowed it” which I can’t agree to more. If you watch him in Chungking Express, Lavender, Fallen Angels and compare it to more recent films like Perhaps Love, Confessions of Pain, The Warlords, Wu Xia and K-20 you’ll realize that his acting went from boyish and naive charm to hardened, mature and charismatic.

Seriously, if TVB “artistes” study him they’d be 400x better but alas they squander in their mediocrity.

      7. And this isn’t necessarily their fault. It’s like they’re shooting 24/7, 365 days a year and they can’t stop for a while to cultivate their craft.

It’s what happened to me when I decided to write a diary entry everyday in Japanese – my knowledge stayed the same because I was using the same grammar structures and words all the time. I stopped and read some light novels and some essays and studied scripts from anime and now I feel like my knowledge has broadened.

      8. @advo

It takes but a second for a fluent speaker of a language to pick up any discrepancies in your accent. Intermediate speakers such as yourself might not be able to do this so they can get away with a lot.

      9. By the way, Carina Lau. There’s a talented actress who speaks perfect Mandarin and Cantonese. None of her works are ever dubbed.

      10. “Even more important than good acting skills and natural charisma”
This is a moot point as Christine possesses none of the first quality and debatable amounts of the 2nd.

Oceane zhu, whose speech was as unintelligible as Christine’s (she has improved in the recent sitcom), was met with more acceptance due to her natural acting skills and vivacity.

      11. I agree with Nicole in that Christine can’t act AND she’s not incredibly charming onscreen. I like Eliza Sam much better– don’t mean to compare the two again as I’m sure it’s been done countless times. I don’t like the way Christine acts, don’t like the way she talks, and don’t like her roles. She seems really self-conscious to me for some reason. Stiff and unnatural.

  3. ^exactly. these kinds of reputation-ruining rumors and unjustified harassment from others have caused many to have depression and even commit suicide, just hurting the innocent just because ppl are sad and sick inside. thats why you need to speak up and confront horrible ppl that bully the quiet and weak. her acting can be judged but these ppl know nothing of her character outside to make any defaming comments on.

if the press told them to ostracize, hate, and lynch their neighbors, i won’t be surprised if there are some ppl that will grab their pitchfork and idiotically line up without thinking twice. the media is dangerous if not responsible in reporting. alot of crazy mobs around that follow the hate wagon.

      1. Yes I agree with what you said.
I think the HK media needs to take responsibility for what it is publishing. These “rumours” can really trigger someone to commit suicide or bring someone down. If these actresses/actors didn’t have a good EQ or know how to release some of it, the aftermath could be disastrous. But no matter what the circumstance is, it is not right to write someone like that, especially when it is wrong or for “fun”.

    1. A famous Shanghai actress of the 30’s Ruan Lingyu committed suicide because she could no longer cope with the vicious gossip and rumor-mongering by the press. The scenario has repeated itself in the last few years with a spate of numerous suicides by S. Korean actresses.

      1. S.korean actresses commit suicide because they can’t handle the constant prostitution, not because of the gossip. Most of them have left suicide notes claiming their companies using them as sex objects, nothing to do with gossips.

      2. what a generalisation. Just because one suicide was exposed to be due to prostitution, but it doesn’t mean they all were. like the one who committed suicide due to the rumours that accused her of causing another actors death? Considering she was 40 and had two kids, I really doubt her involvement in the prostituition ring.

Oh yeah, and a few years later, her ex husband also committed suicide due to the hatred he faced for his past abusive actions to her.

They had two young children. Hope the rumourmongers are happy.

      3. You talking about Choi Jin Sil? It sounds like her from the first paragraph. I didn’t know her ex had died though. Poor kids -three suicides in the family…

      4. Oh yes, sorry I didn’t remember her name, just remember reading about her, her brother, and her ex husband committing suicide on a korean news site some time ago, and hundreds of her fans who copied her and committed suicide after her. Morbid. One fake rumour can cause the death of so many people…
I wonder if 10 years down the road, I’m gonna read about the children committing suicide :/ must be quite a burden to them.

  4. Pretty & sweet looking Christine definitely rumours will hunt her..as the chinese saying..”beauty with thin life”

  5. Glad to see she’s developing a thicker skin to deal with the HK media.

  6. Christine looks good in pictures. But, that doesn’t translate onscreen.

  7. So very glad she had friends surrounding her and come to her aid. Depression can be serious if left unattended.

Id like to know why is she so hated? Not a good actress? Cant speak proper cantonese? I get all of that but to ‘hate’ and ‘dislike’ her that much for those reasons is _______.

    1. she chose to enter the industry and she’s not the only one havingb rumours! others such as myolie, nancy all have worse rumours. do you see them crumbling like christine? no. showed how low her eq and strentgh is.

      1. She chose to enter the industry therefore she should transform into steel and not feel anything? No no. It does not work that way. Being in the industry does not give any other human being the right to destruct the entertainer’s mental state. It is wrong on all levels.

I assure you myolie was also extremely down and crumbled much worse than christine at the time when she filmed for fei tin. Articles are all over the net waiting for you to read them… so now myolie crumbled as well…does she have low eq and strength too? I guess….only according to you.

      2. can you PLEASE shut up? Myolie herself said that she had depression for years after 2006? So she didn’t crumble like christine?

Do you even know ANYTHING about your own idol? You are just a dumb fake fan.

      3. everyone knows that. but myolie didn’t crumble as much as christine did with the rumour. myolie’s condition was caused by her extreme diet which affected her mentally and physically and she went up again with her strog willpower and help from her sisters. christine only has to deal with rumours from magazines.

      4. who wouldn’t feel depressed and useless if you sacrifice so much that if affected your mental and physical but all you get is bad rumours from media and no reward from company?

      5. Alright so who wouldnt feel upset if she did absolutely NOTHING wrong and is garnering all these negative rumors?

I must tell you it is wrong to compare who has it worse. It doesnt matter. Negative is negative. No matter how you like to weigh one over the other, which all human beings have the tendency to do so, it doesnt change the fact theyre both still negatives.

      6. Depression is a serious issue. Christine just became popular. Not surprised that she would be unused to the rumors. Myolie had already been in the industry for 7 years when she became depressed?

If you are a fan of Myolie/Nancy/Kenneth/Kevin, can you please SHUT UP and stop using them to bash others.

      7. “f you are a fan of Myolie/Nancy/Kenneth/Kevin, can you please SHUT UP and stop using them to bash others.”

Yes, please do not use other people to bash others. :/

      8. Even if she has low EQ and strength, so wat? It’s a crime?

      9. @Fox: “Even if she has low EQ and strength, so wat? It’s a crime?”

Regardless of having low or high EQ, these rumours spread by any press can damage one’s reputation, one’s self-esteem. Oh yeah, no one is immune to these type of news. Just look at msxie’s comment above regarding actual commit suicides DUE to what the media has been doing. I am saying that the media needs to be accountable for what they’re doing and what they put out there. Words can hurt people in a deep way. Depression is serious stuff. Let me ask you this, how would you feel if you were bashed publicly by the HK press every single time and although you know it’s not true, your fans and other people are reading it and believes every word. How would you feel if your classmates blames you for something you didn’t do? Wouldn’t you feel upset?

      10. I dun mean so, Bubblez. I mean that Sel_fi_wu made Christine’s low EQ and strength (if she really is) like a serious crime that can’t be accepted. Even if Christine is like that, it isn’t her crime or fault.

      11. I dun mean so, Bubblez. I mean that Sel_fi_wu made Christine’s low EQ and strength (if she really is) like a serious crime that can’t be accepted. Even if Christine is like that, it isn’t her crime or fault.
        ^ OH okay. whoops. sorry!

  8. christine’s relaxed response is questionable! as if she knew and aware that this rumour will surface and what a covenience that this rumour comes up while her series is airing. highly suspicious that tvb purposely using aaron to make christine get noise.

  9. I don’t think all these rumors are good for her. It seems like Christine is not well-liked by reporters in comparison to Eliza.

    1. Let Eliza get more popular… and then the rumours will start. it’s all about feeding the HK people stories they want to hear – whether true or not 😛

  10. “But if this continues, I don’t think any many would dare to come near me! I definitely won’t have any rumors then!”

Hey Jayne, I think its supposed to be “anyone” ? 😉

  11. lolz i bet she’s secretly crying herself to sleep.

    1. she does not look like she’s suffering from depressive disorders in the photo

      1. Fyi: most of the photos used on jaynestars are unrelated to the article, an old photo, or just reused. Some photos have been “recycled” 3-4times

  12. She does look sorta pre-depressive. I saw a food so with Master So and she was forever head down and whispering. Maybe she was just being herself that she is soft spoken. I personally do not feel she was flirting with Master So as claimed by the person I saw the show with, she seems rather pensive, very in a way thoughtful in a very errrr…. pensive way. But yes she does look like she is sad. I do think she is lovely though except I can’t understand a word she was saying and I guess she spoke so soft is because she has no confidence.

Anyway to me she is the next Sonija Kwok, as in Queen of Rumours. Probably the difference is Sonija Kwok was a die hard romantic falling for her costars whilst Christine is more Charmaine? Forever linked just because she is easy target?

And if the rumour with Aaron is true, well.. Aaron is a better rumour than anybody else. Even if 2 decades older?

  13. Doesnt matter, don’t like her. Acting is forever bad. She’s not that pretty to me either. But it’s subjective 😛

  14. I feel sorry for her. She’s indeed lucky to find Leanne and Wong Cho Lam who helped her. Sometimes HK media can be too overboard in their rumourmongering.

  15. Does anyone agree that in this pic she looks a bit like Aimee Chan?

    1. No, I don’t see the resemblance and please don’t link her to Aimee Chan.

  16. If Christine really is a Christian, then sure, I am her sister in Christ. But she should not be an actress! I would happily see her in church all the time but never, ever again on a TVB screen.

Just two episodes of Tiger Cubs was enough to make me mute the screen and just read the subtitles whenever she’s speaking. She does not speak Cantonese. She doesn’t need to improve her accent. She needs to realize that she doesn’t even legitimately speak the language at all.

And yes…how can she even act when she doesn’t “connect” with what she’s saying? (cuz she doesn’t know what it really “sounds” like at all)

  17. I hope she stays and represents HK actresses. With practice and hard work, she can overcome her canto-taiwo language. I rather see her than actresses (using dubs) from mainland China. It would be nice, if the TVB power actresses befriends her. I guess it is a girl thing.

  18. she’s an idiot. if you don’t know how to deal with bad publicity, you don’t know how to deal with fame, then don’t be in this industry.
