Fala Chen Delivers Emotional Scene in “Peg O’ My Heart”

The psychological thriller Peg O’ My Heart (贖夢) directed and starring Nick Cheung (張家輝) aims to use nightmares to explore the theme of cause and effect. The movie has received positive reviews as it tries to convince moviegoers to look beyond its horror undertone for the film’s message.

In the film, Nick and Fala Chen (陳法拉) play a couple whose poor decisions led them to being plagued by recurring nightmares. As both the director and actor, Nick had to manage his own emotion while shoot scenes while constantly checking the camera to get the shot.

One particular scene that was notable for its emotional depth was when Fala’s character visited Nick’s character in the prison. When Nick’s character urged Fala to let him go, Fala felt as through her husband, who had always been with her through thick and thin, had now betrayed her. Unable to accept the situation, Fala’s character was heartbroken and took out her emotions by slamming herself against the glass window. The scene made a deep impression on Nick and he sobbed while watching the scene.

Immediately after, Fala’s character made the decision to end her life by jumping off a building. For this scene, Fala was instructed to fall from a great height to land in a narrow gap on the roof of a truck. It was a challenging task as Fala had to bend her waist 180 degrees and lie on her head upside.

After taking sufficient safety measures and some simple warm-up exercise, Fala successfully completed the shot in only 3 takes. After each take, Fala would review the video and record her performance on the phone to check on areas of improvements. When asked if the scene was uncomfortable to film, she laughed and said, “Luckily, I ate some longans and half a bowl of congee before filming so I had strength to bend like that!”
