Fala Chen Not in a Hurry to Make Official Comeback
Completing the third year of her masters degree at The Juilliard School, Fala Chen (陳法拉) flew back to Hong Kong for work. Due to graduate next year, Fala is not in an immediate hurry to make an official return, but reassured that she will continue her pursuits in acting.
Enjoying the past three years of being a carefree student, Fala’s lifestyle in the United States revolved around school and spending time with her parents. Adopting a simpler lifestyle now, Fala thinks it is too expensive to spend thousands of dollars on clothes. Since studying in New York, Fala revealed that she has not spent more than a hundred dollars on a shirt.
Returning to Hong Kong recently, Fala only had to complete voice-dubbing for a movie and participate in a magazine photoshoot. Many parties have already began contacting Fala’s manager regarding her schedule. Unknown when she would officially pick up her career again, Fala is not in a hurry but still sees acting as her career.
Aside from her work projects, there has been very little news on Fala’s love life since her breakup with Daniel Sit (薛世恒). As her current boyfriend is not an artiste, Fala was able to meet more people from different backgrounds. Although she did not disclose any further information on her new love, Fala hopes to have her own family in the future.

can’t wait to see fala’s juilliard training in action; then we’ll know if it’s all hype or not
Well, one thing’s for sure – if Fala does return to HK for work, hopefully she doesn’t go back to filming for TVB because that would be such a huge waste of her training. The best way for her to apply her Julliard training in HK is through either theater or movies, as those are the two mediums that would appreciate that type of art and she would truly be able to showcase what she learned. With that said though, the most ideal option is to bypass HK completely and focus more on international arena instead, since, at the end of the day, the HK market is small and also limited in creativity, especially in the arts….plus, HK audiences are not as willing to accept new things in the entertainment realm, so it’s easy for artists’ careers to become stagnant if their focus is on HK only.
@llwy12 Thought she had done a stage show since her grad, no? I agree though, TVB would be a waste of her time and effort. I don’t think she’ll break into international market either, unless you count China as international. If she stays with HK, her best chance is movies IMO. Wonder if she has connections. Best of luck to her.
@jjwong Yea, she did that stageplay with Dayo Wong (I think it was called Starlight or something like that)…heard that she was pretty good, plus Dayo is a master at his craft so he was a great choice to learn from. Those are the types of opportunities she needs, not TVB.
I’m pretty sure she has connections. Agreed that if she stayed in HK, best chance would be movies, though theater has a pretty big following too with the HKAPA cultivating talent in that area. International doesn’t have to be the big famous type stuff — to me, getting a part in a Broadway play, for example, is way more prestigious than getting a so-called “meaty” role in a TVB series….
@llwy12 Surprise that Broadway is a more prestige thing in HK. That’s good. Though in the end, Broadway actors go into films to make the dough thoug. At least, It’s so in US. Broadway gets Tonys and recognitions but the money making is in films where the fans and followings are.
@jjwong Actually, the Broadway thing was my personal opinion. For Fala to enroll at Julliard and take classes on acting, it’s obvious she is interested in the art of acting rather than the money, so if that’s the case, theater career is probably more in line with that. The HK television and movie industries nowadays are more about money and politics than about cultivation of the arts, so if Fala’s desire is serious pursuit of the arts, then definitely she is better off doing it in a place that would appreciate it – and unfortunately, there aren’t too many places in HK that would, which is why I mentioned international (meaning “outside of HK”), since it’s less restrictive and limiting. In any case, if she were to pursue a theater + film career, I think that would work out well for her – just don’t bother with television because there is no hope there anymore.
@llwy12 I agree if she wants artistic growth and hones her crafts, then broadway, outside of TVB and away from HK films make sense for her. Though I see many HK artists go into BW after they make it in other aspects to get that financial stability. Then again, she might already have a stable mean. She came from a wealthy or at least well off family, no? She might had gotten some bene8out of her ex-marriage too (assuming the marriage rumor is true). She has the look and is better her self, I think she’ll make it with some persistent and passion. Good luck to her.
99.9% sure she will not go back to TVB. you don’t come from training @ Julliard’s to do grunt work for TVB after lol. plus she was fin with TVB when she decided to leave.
my guess is she will probably do an assortment of film/plays in future when she’s done with school. she may audition for american roles in TV and/or films.
