Felix Wong Was “Waiting to Die” After Wife’s Passing

Felix Wong’s (黃日華) wife, former actress Leung Kit Wah (梁潔華), lost her battle to cancer in May 2020. Sleeping in an empty bed after 40 years of being together, his wife’s loss hasn’t been easy. Despite holding a brave face in front of the media, Felix would hide in the bathroom himself when he was alone, smoking at least a pack of cigarettes every single day.

Felix’s emotional world was empty. In the days after his wife passed, Felix hid himself at home for an entire week. His friends felt helpless, and they were all concerned that he would consider taking his own life. Eventually, Felix himself realized afterwards that he was heading towards that direction.

“I felt like I had no one to rely on anymore,” he admitted. “It’s like I became mute. I had no more goals in life. Life became meaningless. I finally understood why people would commit suicide after their life partner passes away. Because at that moment in time, I really felt like I was waiting to die. But then, I came to the realization that I cannot think that way, because what would happen to my mother-in-law? My daughter? I promised my wife to take care of them, so I cannot head towards that direction! In acting, you always come across death. I use those skills I learned in acting for myself, and it makes me feel better.”

To live a meaningful life, Felix must first re-learn how to be alone but not feel lonely. The 59-year-old is grateful to have his close friend and fellow Five Tigers (五虎將) member, Michael Miu (苗僑偉), to keep him company while he was mourning.

“I made sure to keep my schedule busy every day,” said Felix. “Every morning and night, I save some time to say prayers to my wife. In the afternoon, I would either play soccer or attend my candle-making class. At night, I would eat dinner at Michael Miu’s place. When I go back home, I tidy the house and organize the photos I’ve taken with my wife. I also save time to be lazy and watch a few games!”

Asked if he would consider going back to acting, he said, “I don’t think so. Maybe I’ll film a few commercials, but I really want to enjoy my life!”

Finally ready to start a new chapter in his life, reporters also asked if Felix would consider finding another partner in life. “Won’t be thinking of that any time soon,” he said. “I’m still in the process of getting used to this new life. But never say never.”
