Flora Chan Brings Stars Back to School in New Program

Life is a bildungsroman for the 48 year-old actress, who has a PhD.

After School <放學後>, an education-themed variety program co-produced by actress Flora Chan (陳慧珊) and her husband Mike Chung (鍾家鴻) in collaboration with Hong Kong Open TV, features guest stars sharing about their personal learning journeys in every episode. Hoping to inspire a culture of continuous learning through the program, Flora wants to encourage more people to make a positive impact in society even in the smallest ways.

Grateful for Strong Wave of Support from Celebrity Guests

Working on the program with her husband, Flora revealed that even though she is often known for being a perfectionist, Mike is even more so than her.

Since two years ago, Flora started inviting celebrity guests to film the show and explained the purpose to them, receiving their favorable support. Taking Hong Kong politician John Tsang (曾俊華) as an example, Flora said that although he has stopped taking long-distance flights for recreational travels, he did not mind going to the Unite States to shoot the program.

Another guest on the program, Jessica Hsuan (宣萱) has a packed filming schedule but she requested a three-day break from manager Louis Koo (古天樂) to shoot in England with Flora.

Even though Flora herself tried to persuade Myolie Wu (胡杏兒) to skip travelling since she was pregnant, Myolie herself was adamant that she had to go back to her former school in Ireland to make the program’s message more convincing, and her husband Philip Lee (李乘德) was also supportive of her decision. Grateful for their support, Flora said that “While my own strength is limited, with everyone’s support we can influence more people.

Never Stop Learning

Ever since her daughter Mira’s birth in 2008, Flora has been setting a good example by returning to school to study for a Master’s Degree. She accepted her professor’s advice to continue her studies due to her outstanding grades. She also broke tradition by being accepted into the PhD program at Hong Kong University.

Reflecting on her journey, Flora adds, “I don’t think everyone should study like I did. In the program some guests left school very early, but they (still) managed to find success because of continuous self-improvement and learning. I hope to encourage everyone to adopt self-learning, so we can realize an improved version of ourselves and if every follows suit, we can look forward to better communities, better countries and eventually, a better world.”

The first episode of After School will focus on Flora herself and other guest stars to be featured include actors Francis Ng (吳鎮宇) and Michael Wong (王敏德).

  1. we, as humans, should never be at a stand still. learning does not have to be academic, it could be through life or other means. the program seems to have an emphasis on academics,

i feel that some people may see the need for them to improve but not have the proper resource. school is certainly a great way to learn but it’s not like everyone’s got the same access. perhaps they’d eventually film something to show that learning could be done outside of school.
