G.E.M. Sets New Record for Chinese-language Artists
G.E.M. (鄧紫棋) has broken a record that was previously set by Jay Chou (周杰倫).
Although 2019 is the first year G.E.M. is without the backing of her agency Hummingbird Music, which she is in a lawsuit with, this new record may just be the catalyst to propel the singer to new heights.
As of 2019, G.E.M.’s song “Light Years Away” <光年之外> for the Hollywood film Passengers has surpassed 200 million views, breaking a record previously set by Jay Chou for having the most-viewed Chinese-language music video on YouTube. Jay Chou’s “Love Confession” <告白氣球>, released in October 2016, currently sits at 197 million views.
“Light Years Away” is not the only G.E.M. music video to surpass a hundred million. Her 2005 single “Goodbye” <再見> currently sits at 100.5 million views. She is the only Chinese-language singer on YouTube to have more than one video break over a hundred million.
On the success of “Light Years Away”, G.E.M. wrote on Facebook, “It has finally broken 200 million views on YouTube! This is also the first Chinese-language song to reach that number! I was just looking back at the photos and videos I’ve taken two years ago while making the MV, and I still remember everything vividly. I never thought that this song would break 200 million! Thank you all for writing history with me. I will continue to work hard!”

That M/V is from 3 years ago. If it happened in a matter of months of debuting I’ll give it props.
All the revenue still goes to her old company. Not sure if there’s much to celebrate.
@hazel
It’s the milestone achievement rather than the money which pales in comparison to all her other income…
Very late comment, as I just came back from vacation and read this article.
“She is the only Chinese-language singer on YouTube to have more than one video break over a hundred million.” NOT TRUE – Jay Chou technically has 2.5 songs with over 100MM views, namely 告白氣球, 不該 and 等你下課.
