Gong Jun and Xu Kai to Star in “The Blood of Youth” Prequel

Last year’s wuxia drama The Blood of Youth <少年歌行> was a critical success, spawning plans for a prequel in the works. Titled The Young Brewmaster’s Adventure <少年白馬醉春風>, Xu Kai (許凱), Gong Jun (龔俊), and Tan Jianci (檀健次) will reportedly star in the prequel.

Taking place 20 years before The Blood of Youth, the story explores the enigmatic past of Ye Dingzhi (Xu Kai), Baili Dongjun (Gong Jun), and Le Mengsha (Tan Jianci) and how they became leaders in the pugilistic world. The prequel also answers burning questions on martial arts master and wine shop connoisseur Baili Dongjun’s complex past on why he killed his wife.

Despite the popularity of the male leads, fans were left disappointed and questioning whether the cast of idol actors in The Young Brewmaster’s Adventure would work. The strength of The Blood of Youth relied on the strong chemistry and brotherhood in the drama, instead of recruiting popular idol actors.  One naysayer wrote, “The Blood of Youth was never an idol drama. I don’t know why they would cast Xu Kai or Gong Jun. I hope they will find other actors with more charisma to match the characters. It’s not about popularity or good looks.”
