Grace Chan Impressed Veteran Actor Hugo Ng

Grace Chan (陳凱琳) and Steven Cheung (張致恒) were filming a scene for the TVB drama Brother’s Keeper 2 <巨輪II> at a jewelry store earlier this week. The drama, which is a direct sequel to 2013’s Brother’s Keeper, also stars Kristal Tin (田蕊妮) and Edwin Siu (蕭正楠), with special guest appearances by Ruco Chan (陳展鵬) and Linda Chung (鍾嘉欣).

In the scene, Grace and Steven are buying a present for their father, portrayed by veteran actor Hugo Ng (吳岱融). Hugo, one of TVB’s leading siusangs in the 1980’s, returned to TVB earlier this year after a twenty-year break from the company. His first work since returning to TVB was The Executioner <刀下留人>; Brother’s Keeper is his second project.

Feeling nostalgic, Hugo said he has prepared himself for the long working hours. On his thoughts on rookie actress Grace, who portrays his daughter, Hugo was full of praises. “We only did a few scenes together so far, but she’s much better than I expected. Very smart. The new generation is much smarter than we were back then.”

Grace shared that she will have a relationship line with Edwin, and the two will have some kissing scenes. Grace expressed that her character is a difficult one to grasp, and she will use this opportunity to learn from senior Hugo Ng.

When speaking about the scene, which is about Grace and Steven buying an expensive gift for their father, Grace admitted that while she has received expensive gifts before, she prefers receiving gifts with more heart than money. Asking if she has bought a present for boyfriend Kevin Cheng’s () birthday, which was on August 15, she said, “It’s a secret! I do think he’ll like it.”

In regards to her upcoming kissing scene with Edwin, she said, “I’m sure it’ll turn out beautiful and romantic.” Did she already explain the scene to Kevin? “When it comes to work, we are all at ease. I’ll talk about it with other people and it comes up in conversations.”

  1. I thought Hugo Ng was in Treasure Raiders with Felix Wong 10-15 years ago. So how was he on a 20 year break? Or have i mistaken something?

    1. @supermario
Yes,you are right that he has not been away from TVB for 20 years. He was in Treasure Raiders with Felix around 2001/2002. This is another example of how these articles can have a lot of errors and untrue statements and facts. Hugo is truly an amazing actor and it is great to see him back. I just saw him recently in Feng Shen Bang 1 and Fang Huo Jia Ren. His acting is great as always. Grace is truly lucky to be able to act with and learn from him.

    2. @supermario Technically, both you and the person who translated the article are correct. Hugo officially left TVB back in the mid-90s after having a fall-out with them over his contract and other issues and after that, he pretty much disappeared from the HK television industry. So yes, he hasn’t worked for TVB in 20 years or so. He did film Treasure Raiders back in 2001, but he was not under TVB contract, so that doesn’t really count as ‘working for TVB’ (I don’t remember how he became involved with that series, but it was definitely prior to him working for ATV and also going to Mainland). He focused his career in Mainland the past 10 years and only returned to HK last year with his wife (former actress Lily Chung) and their kids, so he rejoined TVB.

Not sure how Hugo’s acting is now since he’s been away for so long, plus I didn’t watch any of his Mainland series — will be curious to see how he does in BK2.

Ahh ok thank you for the clarification. I only remembered Treasure Raiders because of the theme song sung by Dave Wong.. i absolutely loved that song. The actual drama was pretty average =)

  2. Hugo Ng’s acting is at a very high level and has a big on sceen presence. He is senior member of the Hong Kong actors guild for a reason. I’m sure we will get to see this over the next year.

  3. my impression of him was from the tvb drama with leon and michelle reis. he was the bad guy on the show and i didn’t like him. i watched it when i was really young and i remember that i heard he filmed category 3 movies w/ his wife. I remember him still but just with any good impressions. i haven’t seen his recent works, maybe if i watch it now, i may have more appreciation for it.

    1. @m0m0 The Leon/Michelle drama you’re thinking of is The Legendary Ranger (原振俠) from 1993….that was actually Hugo’s last series with TVB before he left. Yes, he was a villain (though not his first time) and it wasn’t really one of his best performances either. Watch his series from the 80s era, as his best works were during that time period. For me, his most representative work will always be as Fa Mo Kuet in the Tony Leung version of The Two Most Honorable Knights (絕代雙驕) from 1988 — best version I’ve watched and still a favorite even now. Enjoyed his performances in The Saga of the Lost Kingdom (嬴單傳奇) from 1988 and Black Sabre (邊城浪子) from 1991 as well (both series are also favorites of mine). Oh I also liked his performance in Legend of Master Chan (吉星報喜) from 1989 — the series itself was so-so (the draw was really the cast) and Hugo didn’t have a tremendous amount of screentime, but I liked that he portrayed a comedic, playful character, as it was a nice departure from the mostly dramatic roles he always got from TVB. Modern series-wise, I would say Trial of a Lifetime (相愛又如何) from 1989 is his most representative work (at TVB that is)…

Not sure what happened during the 10 years or so after he left TVB, as that was around the time he and his wife filmed the category III movies. My guess is probably money issues at that time….

      1. @elizabeth It also had something to do with an appearance on ATV from what I remember. And I think Hugo went back to Singapore after that too because his wife Lily Chung did an interview lately and said the first few years of their marriage was difficult (they got married in the mid-90s as well) — they were living in Singapore (their son was born there) and they kept having to travel back and forth for work.

Good to see that all of that is behind them now and they were able to find some success in Mainland the past 10 years that put them in a more comfortable position.

      2. @llwy12 I actually quite liked Hugo back then and still do now even though he has aged. He really could act and had a good working attitude. I have been watching him in Mainland Chinese series for the past few years (he mainly Yu Zheng series which is not good for me) so I am sort of glad that he is back in TVB. And TVB really needs veterans.

      3. @elizabeth I liked Hugo too and agree that he truly could act, plus I always felt that he had a certain charisma on-screen that stood out from other actors. I’m actually kind of on the fence though about whether to be happy he’s back at TVB given their situation the past couple years. While it’s true that TVB needs veterans, it’s not going to help if they put those veterans in crappy series with poorly-written scripts (not to mention having to ‘babysit’ newbies). I just hope they don’t end up wasting the talent like they’ve been doing with most of the other veterans who have returned over the years….

      4. @llwy12 Seriously I am at a lost with whether to support TVB or not. I have disliked recent TVB series for their bad writing and also the lack of creativity to attract my interest. ATV has no productions and HKTV can’t get a licence. If no one gives TVB a chance, then HK dramas will be doomed.

I don’t think Hugo has signed any long-term contract with TVB so but he may get some benefit when TVB hooks up with Mainland Chinese companies in the future.

      5. @elizabeth Unfortunately, it’s hard to find a reason to support TVB nowadays. The only reason I still do it is because of the veteran artists I grew up watching who either still work for them (whether management contract or per series contract) or who still appear on their programs / film for them occasionally. The way I see it, I’m mostly supporting the artists as well as the behind-the-scenes people I like rather than TVB itself.

And while I understand the piece about ‘giving TVB a chance’ and thereby giving HK dramas a chance, it also goes the other way in my book — TVB also needs to put in the effort to make me (as an audience) feel like they deserve a chance. To me, not only have they NOT put in the effort (which is obvious with the lack of quality in their programs), they also DON’T WANT TO put in the effort (which is evident from their stupid decisions and actions the past couple years). In short — TVB doesn’t give a care (about us audiences and about making quality HK dramas) so why should I give a care about them? Basically, TVB needs to stop banking on the assumption that audiences will continue to blindly support them out of loyalty and therefore continue to churn out garbage year after year…sooner or later it is going backfire on them.

  4. Grace is pretty but she’s so skinny that the dress looks like it’s about to fall off her. Yes the style is off shoulders but it looks like she has nothing to support it. Her body looks fragile and boney =O

  5. I think I watched quite a bit old television dramas especially tvb, but Hugo Ng looks rather stranger to me.

…until I read “Hugo, one of TVB’s leading siusangs in the 1980’s, returned to TVB earlier this year after a twenty-year break from the company.”

    1. grace is young…that is her asset. she is getting plum roles. her boyfriend maybe a little older but still has the looks. like what freedalas mentioned, they are attractive people. no matter how I see WCL, only Leanne knows what she likes in him.

  7. Unfortunately most young couples nowadays are all about money and not heart. Grace seems to be all about love for Kevin. Not only she doesn’t mind the age gap but also she could care or less for expensive gifts. Unfortunately, there aren’t many girls think like her nowadays
