Grace Chan Shares Update on Life with a Newborn

Grace Chan (陳凱琳) attended an event for eyewear brand Khromis yesterday and flaunted her slim figure. It was apparent the 27-year-old actress lost all her baby weight in less than two months after giving birth to her son Rafael Cheng. In fact, all eyes were on the star’s fuller bust, to which she attributed to breastfeeding. However, she hopes everyone will place their attention elsewhere and expressed the joys of being a first time parent.

“In the future, my figure will change again after I stop breastfeeding. I don’t want to have to address it then,” Grace said. “The most important thing is that my baby is fed well. His appetite is very good and he always looks so satisfied after eating. For that, I feel very grateful.”

She disclosed her husband Kevin Cheng (鄭嘉穎) is on the same page as her when it comes to another baby. They both have the desire for a second child but only after Rafael turns one. “We have a lot to learn especially with our first baby. There is so much to learn every day and it seems like we will never finish learning everything. Sometimes we make mistakes, but we learn from it. For example, my baby has erythema toxicum, which is very common, but my postpartum helper was the one who taught me to wash him with honeysuckle as a remedy,” Grace shared.

Since the new mother spends a lot of time caring for Rafael, reporters asked her if Kevin is jealous. She exclaimed she should be the one who’s jealous as Kevin dotes on Rafael a lot.

On top of that, she shared a funny story in which Rafael “poured tea” for Kevin. “At the time, I was standing right in front of him changing his diaper while my husband was standing on the side. Rafael took a piss and aimed it horizontally so it hit my husband,” Grace laughed.

As Rafael is still young, Grace revealed she is taking a break from filming dramas. Having already gradually resumed work, she is mainly focusing on variety shows for the time being. “I want to spend more time taking care of my baby. He is growing up every day so I don’t want to miss any challenges, so I will work on easier jobs for now,” she expressed.

  1. I commend her for breastfeeding, that is not easy. I just don’t understand how she is able to go to these events. In order to keep up a good milk supply, baby needs to feed every 2-3 hours the first couple of months.

BTW, erythema toxicum is totally harmless and will go away on its own. It doesn’t leave any marks. No honeysuckle needed.

    1. @potatochip I lost my baby weight while I was expressing milk 24/7. didn’t want baby to latch on because I would be a human pacifier…friend told me her daughter pulled up her blouse asking for milk in public places.

I wonder how she appears at events for few hours without feeling the pain from engorgement.

    2. She can pump and still keep up her milk supply. Don’t have to breastfeed the baby directly.

      1. @janet72 I loved breastfeeding. Best weight loss plan ever. I was skinnier than even before being pregnant.

@coralie Typically in the first couple months, the mother should either have the baby latch on or express milk every 2 to 3 hours. That time is measured from the start of each session. Baby can latch on 10-30 minutes each breast. A pumping session can be 20-30 min each time.

When babies latch, they can cluster feed so he can latch on every hour during growth spurts. Unless it’s a breast pump that is meant to be worn under clothes and continuously pump a little, mom can wait 3 hours to pump.

@khoobunny. She could be pumping milk. But in order to establish a good supply, it has to be frequent. It’s hard to imagine that the time it takes for her to get dressed, made up, drive to the event, stay at the event and drive back to be less than 3 hours. She must feel so uncomfortable at the end.

Once my milk supply was good (around 3-4 months), I was able to pump every 6 hours. But each session lasted 45-60 minutes. My babies were so picky. They didn’t want to do both breast and bottle. So in order to work, I had to exclusively pump.

      2. @coralie I breastfed for a year with each of my 4 kids. It was easy and also not easy at the same time. Lol.

Breastfeeding is a supply and demand issue. If you don’t remove the milk (either latching on or pumping), your body doesn’t knoe that it needs to make more. So if you slowed down the frequency, you would dry up. But as babies gets older they are more efficient. The take bigger feeds less frequently. That’s why the first couple months are crucial to establishing supply.

      3. @potatochip I expressed milk 24/7 for 9 months…I couldn’t go anywhere for more than 3 hours. I lost a lot of weight during the first 6 months. after each time of expressing, I would be perspiring like crazy and eating again. I looked the best during the 6 months. no tummy at all and so fit.
as I didn’t want to be a human pacifier, I expressed full time so that anyone can feed daughter.

    3. @potatochip All my friends who breastfed told me how they couldnt wait for it to be over. Women are made to feel very guilty these days if they dont breastfeed.

I get that it gives baby antibodies and such in theory, but of the 5 of us only me and other sister breastfed. Others were bottled fed and I dont see there being a difference in our health.

      1. @megamiaow @janet72 I agree with both of ya. It really was time inefficient and I was happy when it was over. I do miss the weight loss, though.

Breastfeeding is not for everyone and mothers should not feel bad if it isn’t right for them. I was lucky. The body may not cooperate, the baby may reject the milk, and/or mothers do not always get the needed support from other family members to have time to breastfeed or pump. Fed is best. And the bonding time with the baby (which may occur without a stressed out mother trying to force breastfeeding when it isn’t right for her) is also the utmost importance.

  2. I would watch them if they have their own reality show. High entertainment value! I love watching babies.
