“Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha” Opens to Strong Ratings
Starring Kim Seon Ho and Shin Min Ah, TVN’s seaside romance Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha premiered on August 28 to strong ratings. Labeled the “dimples couple,” the pair easily hooked viewers with their warm and relaxed vibes.
Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha follows bold and positive city dentist, Yoon Hye Jin, quitting her job and moving into a seaside village of Gongjin to open her own clinic. A missing shoe leads her to meet the town’s hero, Hong Doo Shik, who draws her attention with his random skills and wholesome neighborhood relationships. Used to the city life, Hye Jin is a misfit and initially struggles adapting to the slower lifestyle in the village, but Doo Shik tells her not to judge so quickly and she should look deeper inside others.
Showing a promising start, Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha achieved an average nationwide rating of 6.8 percent, while other dramas generally score between 3 to 4 percent in their premiere. Placing first in its time slot, the series also ranked ninth on TVN’s history of premiere ratings.
Many praised the compatibility and chemistry between Seon Ho and Min Ah as their fused charms easily set off romantic sparks. Although viewers sense some awkwardness in their performances, especially in the comic relief, they believe it would improve as they better adapt to their roles.
In addition, while the first episode displays much overused Korean romantic tropes and cliches, most still consider the series worth chasing after if the ensuing episodes play out well.
