How “File of Justice” Turned Bobby Au Yeung’s Career Around
Bobby Au Yeung (歐陽震華) is known for being a leading man and any drama that he takes part in is guaranteed to be a ratings winner. However this was not always the case. Bobby was invited to be a guest on Dodo Cheng’s (鄭裕玲) radio show yesterday and he shared his journey to fame and the difficult times he went through.
“I once received a call from a production assistant and he said, ‘Hey, we have a role as a john, are you interested? I asked him if there were lines, and he answered, Why do you even need lines?! Most importantly you can use this opportunity to take advantage of the actress!’ I was so angry that he thought I would be interested and hung up on him. I guess it worked out in the end, I was never offered these types of roles again. It’s not always a good thing to be completely passive.”
Bobby continued, “At one point, I had actually thought of finishing up my contract and giving up on being an actor. At the time, the salary was a meager couple thousand dollars (HKD) per month. But an opportunity finally arose when I was invited to take part in File of Justice <壹號皇庭>. At the time, they were planning for this to be a filler drama in between ones that would be guaranteed winners, but the reaction was unexpectedly positive. I think without this drama, many people would have given up on their acting careers like Michael Tao (陶大宇) and William So (蘇永康).”
Bobby decided to renew his contract with TVB due to the unexpected popularity of File of Justice, afterwards he filmed its sequel and his contract had come to an end again. TVB did not respond to his request to film on a per series contract. “On my last day, I walked out the gates and thought to myself, ‘Is this it?’ However, everything happens for a reason. I left TVB and filmed many dramas and movies, and in that one year made more money than I had made in my 10 years with TVB. I returned to TVB to film File of Justice III and decided to sign a per series contract agreement.”
Recently, photos were leaked onto the Internet showing him filming Come Home Love: Lo and Behold <愛·回家之開心速遞>. It has been an ongoing gag in the sitcom where Cinda Hui’s (許思敏) character is a die hard fan of Bobby Au Yeung, and many viewers had hoped that they would one day invite Bobby onto the show. “I had actually reached out to management about guest starring. Cinda has worked hard for the past 30 years and in our field, actors really need encouragement. In the end everyone is happy!”
