How Margaret Chung Found Courage to Care for Ailing Daughter and Mother

Appearing as a guest for TVB talk show It’s Courage <是敢的>, Margaret Chung (鍾麗淇) shared her journey from being an artiste to a yoga instructor, as well as being a strong mother. Margaret had to overcome many adversities after discovering her eldest daughter was born with a rare genetic disease while watching her mother’s battle with cancer.

Becoming a Yoga Instructor

Born and raised in Canada, Margaret competed in Miss Chinese Toronto Pageant in 1995 and decided to move Hong Kong to develop her career.  Margaret was not very fluent in Chinese and had no experience in acting, yet it was an eye opening experience for the hopeful starlet. It didn’t take long before Margaret fell in love with Hong Kong and didn’t want to leave.

As Margaret tried to build up her career in Hong Kong, she was introduced to yoga by former model Almen Wong (黃佩霞). Since her artiste contract was coming to an end, she made the jump to become a yoga instructor.

Discovering Daughter’s Health Issues

Margaret recalled meeting her husband Nardone Ruggero while drinking with her friends. “When he asked what my hobbies are, I said I liked fishing. He was dumbfounded. It turned out that he loves fishing. We continued to contact each other. When I meet the right person, I will not resist.”

Shortly after the birth of her eldest daughter Isabella, Margaret received devastating news that Isabella was diagnosed with Wolf Hirschhorn Syndrome, a rare genetic disease that would limit her growth. The doctor predicted that Isabella would only live to two years old.

As Margaret tried to come to terms with Isabella’s diagnosis, she also had to worry about her mother’s declining health. Facing multiple health issues of her loved ones, Margaret decided to face her difficulties with courage.

Although Margaret was frustrated and depressed, she never thought about giving up. Her fighting spirit came from her mother, “After my mother recovered from breast cancer, she was diagnosed with muscular dystrophy. When Isabella was born, my mother couldn’t move. I used to be unhappy for her, but my mother told me to stop thinking about it. Mom was sick but she tried hard to fight it.”

Thanking Husband for Support

Isabella defied her odds and is now nine years old. Last year, Isabella reached a major milestone after being accepted to the sole Hong Kong special education school. Experiencing many obstacles, Margaret feels that she is lucky and is thankful for her husband’s support, “The divorce rate for families with special needs children is 45 percent, which is much higher than normal families. However, we didn’t [separate]. Both of us are strong, and we become even stronger when we are together.”

It’s always nice to see couple persevere and work together to tackle obstacles in their marriage rather than give up and just get an easy way out.

  2. Absolutely courageous and a stunning role model for moms out there with special needs children. My heart goes out to her. May blessings come after all this pain

  3. Margaret Cheung is the real role model – great wife, daughter and parent. Her family is lucky to have her. Not everyone can be as strong as her in shouldering all these responsibilities – myself included.
