Their fairy-tale wedding commanded much attention in 2015, but Huang Xiaoming (黃曉明) and Angelababy’s (楊穎) marriage had been dogged by rumors of fading sparks, cheating, and lately divorce after the celebrity couple welcomed their first son. In a commercial event they attended together this year, the lack of interactions seemed to confirm their discord.
Growing Rift Due to Disparate Career Progress?
Some blame the couple’s marital strain on the discrepancies in their respective showbiz careers. An A-lister, Huang Xiaoming allegedly earned 3 billion Chinese yuan yearly at the peak of his career. During their courtship days, he had invested much to help raise Angelababy’s profile when she was still a model to become a well-recognized celebrity throughout Asia.
Putting his career on the back pedal to focus on fatherhood duties after their child Little Sponge was born, Huang Xiaoming’s acting career took a hit from his absence. Along with the closure of multiple outlets of his once-thriving hotpot restaurant business, his emotional health allegedly suffered, as he expressed a sense of helplessness in an interview when he said, “No matter what I film, I get lambasted.”
His sense of anxiety contrasted starkly with Angelababy’s blossoming career – she has multiple variety programs, dramas, product endorsements and other engagements lined up at one point, and this divergence possibly put pressure on the couple’s married life.
Further fanning gossip of discord was talk that Huang Xiaoming chose to quit Sisters Who Make Waves 2 <乘風破浪的姐姐2> due to Angelababy’s unhappiness that he would meet his ex-flame Li Fei’Er (李菲兒) on the show.
Rekindling the Sparks, or Publicity Move?
In an about-turn, talk that Angelababy actually did not mind this and in fact supported Huang Xiaoming to continue hosting the reality contest emerged recently, alongside shifting public opinions that the couple has rekindled their love. This development coincided with Huang Xiaoming’s lackluster career finally going back on track from the success of his film The Bravest <烈火英雄>, which amassed an impressive CNY$1.7 billion in earnings and gave him his second Golden Rooster Best Actor nod since American Dreams in China <中國合伙人>.
Also, Angelabay was spotted wearing a ring gifted from Huang Xiaoming earlier on a recent program. Indeed, Angelababy – said, “He married me when I was a nobody; I will surely support him financially when he is down!”
Furthermore, the actor’s telling reply of “Thank you, I like Baby too” to a Weibo fan comment which said “I like you and Baby” suggest that all was back to normal between the couple.
Part of the reason given for the couple’s seeming reconciliation after months of tension was mounting competition from younger actresses such as Dilraba Dilmurat (迪麗熱巴) and Li Qin (李沁) against Angelababy, which also made some fans wonder if these rumors were intentionally hyped to promote her upcoming drama, The Wind From Longxi <風起隴西>.
