Idy Chan on Breakup with Chow Yun Fat

Sparks flew after Chow Yun Fat (周潤發) and Idy Chan (陳玉蓮) starred together 1978 TVB drama Vanity Fair <大亨> and they started dating shortly after. They were widely viewed as the ideal couple. Chow Yun fat was 22 at the time and Idy was 18; it was rumorred that they secretly dated for five years before going their separate ways.

The reason for their breakup has always been a mystery, but Idy finally decided to unveil it in a recent interview with the Taiwanese media. “I was young and headstrong. I said whatever came to my mind and that did not sit well with his mother. Now that I am older, I have learned that there are different ways to communicate. I always tell others that I am more sly now so the other person is always happier.”

It was also rumored that Chow Yun Fat tried to commit suicide after their breakup; Idy declined to comment and asked the reporter to ask Chow Yun Fat himself.

Commenting on Chow Yun Fat’s marriage to Jasmine Tan (陳薈蓮), Idy said, “I have never met his wife, but I feel that she is someone that can really help him and was integral to his career. If I were still with him, his career would not be at the level that it is today, and I would not have been able to help him become an international star.”
