Jackie Chan and Anita Yuen Resolve Their 22 Year Conflict
It was 22 years of confusion. Rumor has it that Jackie Chan (成龍) did not like Anita Yuen (袁詠議) when they were shooting their 1995 film Thunderbolt <霹靂火>. For the next two decades, Anita responded to confusion whenever she was asked about why Jackie didn’t like her.
On Friday, Anita updated her Weibo with a picture she took with Jackie, which the media dubbed as “the picture of the century.” The 45-year-old actress wrote, “The media have always portrayed me as the actress who made Jackie Chan angry. Thanks to Mr. Eric Tsang’s (曾志偉) arrangements, I finally got know the truth last night. Thank you Big Brother Jackie Chan for his forgiveness. He even made me a gift. Big Brother! Thank you! I will continue to be a good actor!”
Anita shared a photo of Jackie’s gift, which was a set of rulers made up of the film reels from their 1995 movie.
Oriental Daily reached out to Anita to ask about the conflict she had with Jackie. The actress said, “That dinner was arranged by Jackie Chan, Eric Tsang, and Liza Wang (汪明荃). The dinner’s purpose was for artists to talk about the misfortunes they had when they worked in Mainland China. At first, Eric only invited Chilam Cheung (張智霖). When I heard that Jackie Chan would be there, I asked Eric to invite me too. There was a rumor about how he didn’t like me, so I wanted to use that opportunity to meet him again.”
When Jackie heard of Anita’s invite, he gathered some of the film reels from Thunderbolt to give Anita as a gift. “It’s very generous of him,” she said.
Asking why Jackie had disliked her, Anita said, “He told me that he wouldn’t have remembered the incident if I hadn’t told him about it. It turns out that I made a mistake, which got him really upset. But now everything is well!”
According to reports, Anita was not very cooperative during the filming of the movie. When it entered post-production, Jackie asked Anita to do some remaining voice-over work, but Anita never responded to his request. In the end, Jackie had to hire another voice actress.
“I was a rookie. I had just debuted. There were many things that I didn’t know, so I may have upset a lot of people without realizing it,” said Anita. “I want to apologize for my behavior.”
