Janice Man Lost Sleep Over Traumatizing Role n “Nessun Dorma”

Model-turned-actress Janice Man (文詠珊) has never been more ready to take on challenging acting jobs. The 27-year-old, who made her debut in the industry as a model in 2004, fell in love with acting after she was cast in a small role for the 2007 movie, Love Is Not All Around <十分愛>. Since then, JM has played a variety of different roles on screen, including comedy, romance, and action.

Last year, JM portrayed the cold-blooded killer “Messenger” for the crime thriller film Helios <赤道>, which earned her a Best Supporting Actress nomination from the Hong Kong Film Awards. This year, JM will tackle on the psychological thriller Nessun Dorma <兇手還未睡>, portraying a victim of sexual abuse.

“There were many psychological barriers that I had to overcome,” said JM. “After receiving the script, I had to think it over for two whole weeks before I agreed to do it. I had many meetings with director Herman Yau (邱禮濤). In the end, I decided to go for it because I didn’t want to miss out the opportunity.”

In Nessun Dorma, JM plays a young woman who goes nearly insane after suspecting that she was raped. There will be scenes in the film where she gets physically assaulted, and tied naked to a bed. The movie also stars Gordon Lam Ka-tung (林家棟) and Andy Hui (許志安).

“A week before filming started, I was beginning to get really worried,” said JM when she was asked about her thoughts on the role. “Not only was I worried about that [nude] scene, I was also concerned about whether or not I would be able to control my role, and if I would be able to master the role’s complexities. There were many thoughts going on in my head. I had so much stress and I suffered insomnia for a few weeks!”

When speaking about her nude scene in the film, JM said, “I was worried about it at first, but once I got on set, I didn’t even have time to be concerned about it anymore. Since I agreed to do the movie, I must do my best.” Unlike many of her contemporaries, Janice didn’t ask the crew to clear out the studios while shooting the scene. “There was no embarrassment or last-minute stage fright. There was no time to think like that. Once the camera rolled, I went straight into character. Everything was done in a few takes. It went by really smoothly!”

JM thanked her costars, Gordon and Andy, for helping her get into character. “They’ve taught me many things and took great care of me. We’ve become great friends.”

As the new breakthrough film actress in the industry, JM was asked if she hopes to win Film Queen some day. “I really did challenge myself this time, so of course I would like to see some good results! I really want to thank the director and the studios for giving me this opportunity.”

Nessun Dorma will have its world premiere on March 22, 2016 at the 40th Hong Kong International Film Festival.
