Janice Vidal’s Weight Gain Catches Media Attention Again

Once called “fatter than a motorcycle” by her mentor Leon Lai (黎明), Janice Vidal (衛蘭) struggled with her weight for quite some time. In May 2014, months ahead of her Janice Walking to the Future Live 2014 concert, the “Big Brother” singer starred in her own weight-loss show, which documented her foray in pursuing outdoor activities.

Though her 2014 Hong Kong Coliseum concert—and weight-loss—were successful, Janice reached a career plateau when it was announced that her record contract with Amusic was expiring in early 2015. The announcement was then followed by a brief disappearance in the media spotlight, but Janice made her grand return to the studios in June 2015, when she announced that she and her sister Jill Vidal (衛詩) had signed with Warner Music.

Currently in the midst of recording some new music with her sister, Janice has been moderately active on social media, especially on Facebook. In the photos Janice had shared online the past few months, fans observed that Janice looked glowing and fit, praising her for finally being “skinnier than a motorcycle.”

But the paparazzi think otherwise. Recent paparazzi photos snapped of Janice showed her looking noticeably larger than before, with a bloated face and some belly fat. It was reported that she was doing some healthy grocery shopping when the photos were taken, but it didn’t appear like she had lost any weight at all.

Janice shared with a reporter that she has been frequently going to a gym, and also regularly attend dance classes. However, she admitted that she only lost a little weight. Nonetheless, Janice said her ultimate goal is not to see a smaller number, but to have a healthy body. She stressed that eating healthy and doing exercise is more important than looking slimmer.

  1. She does look like she gained a lot of weight. Face does look bloated in the middle photo but the 3rd one isn’t too bad. Going to the gym is good. Like she said, losing weight is not the goal but getting healthier. but yo-yo diets are not healthy for you so hope she will be Ok.

  2. Wow.. that’s some harsh words from Leon! As long as she is happy and healthy, why is it anyone elses’ business how much she weighs?! You can be successful and not be super slim, just look at Adele, she’s celebrated for her talent where the focus should be and not some number on a clothing label. This is why so many young people lose confidence in themselves and have so many insecurities!

HAHAHA LOL..I know, that Leon Lai sure don’t mince words. One of my colleague used to say perhaps cuz he is his own boss not like under someone’s management so he can say/do whatever he wants but sometimes I am sure normal people will still find him rude and stuck up?
But at the same time, I like how he addresses some issues w/o being overly fake. Like he will not intentionally have a press con and cried about a situation just to tell fans I am such and such and lies w/his eyes wide open. A lot of times he gets very blunt w/reporters too and I actually find it interesting. haha…lol… I mean they are so annoying and he will say it as is.

      1. @kiki Wow I’m really glad that someone sees him like this lol! I think he has always been very honest but unfortunately it doesn’t always come across very well in print. Some people will admire him for his frankness and not being afraid of upsetting the media nor let them control him but then people who don’t like him already will continue doing so!

I’ve always thought the media are very manipulative but last year it became more apparent when I watched the TV reports then videos from a fan who recorded all of the press conferences he attended. These things can be up to half an hour but most of the 1-2 minute China reports focused hugely on whenever he was being a bit blunt and made such a big deal out of it. In a couple of the HK ones, they included the part directly afterwards where he apologised for being straightforward and that it’s just his character then thanked everyone for all the effort they put in. In the videos, you can see he looks out for everyone, is a bit cheeky/playful towards the host (but this can be hard to tell because he always looks so serious lol) and hear the audience burst out laughing. I was a bit shocked to see the huge difference editing can do. I guess it’s the same for any celebrity but when it happens to someone you have followed for years and are familiar with their kind of humour and that they are very humble, generous and have never spoken badly about anyone then the negative reports can really frustrate you.

Sorry I’ll stop now, I’ve gone on for far too long! BTW, he opened a Facebook (LLLeonLai) account recently; it’s utterly random, unexpected, funny, creative and not a selfie in sight!

Lol….I have to say I am/was never a particularly a hardcore fan of his or any Asian celeb for that matter haha…but you do hear the news clips here and there when your parents watches TVB or Asian TV and plus utube have tons of clips on anything these days. I came across him during that time he divorced that young wife of his that I hear him talk and I find him surprisingly blunt yet truthful kind of way compares to some others. I find it unbelievable that some people try to evade the have a g/f or b/f/married/single/dating who questions so exclusively that they have to lie w/their eyes wide open. It’s hard to understand and is it really necessary? I don’t don’t get those so I find him surprisingly interesting upon hearing him on interviews and such. Yes, a lot of times he is a bit too blunt I mean that’s where the politeness and rude comes in but most of the time the reporters asked for it so it was hard not to like his replies. haha ….lol…
Wow, FB page that’s something since he does sound like a private person.

      3. @kiki Oh I realised you’re not a fan that’s why it was so refreshing to read! You can probably work out I don’t often see comments from people who share your opinions about him lol. Yeah I love it when he gives sassy replies to reporters! Just makes me laugh because you never see them coming and that he has the guts to say how he really feels if he thinks an inappropriate question is being asked in a business where everyone is so obsessed and worried about image/media portrayal. Quoting one of his golden phrases, “Just do your best, don’t worry about others. No matter whether you’re a good person or a bad person, there will always be someone who thinks you’re despicable”.

He’s had a Weibo account for years but mostly uses it to promote his upcoming projects and tell followers to wear more clothes/take an umbrella if he hears the weather’s going to get really cold or heavy rain is on the way lol. I think he opened an FB page to promote his upcoming concert. It’s not like your average celebrity page with photos everywhere, he still keeps his private life private. It’s been a pleasant surprise to people who’ve portrayed him as a serious/emotionless guy!

Ohh, I am neutral –super neutral haha…when it comes to bs entertainment n celebs especially. I remember I watched Taiwan MG and that was the only version I have watched and did manage to see clips trailers of the other versions and commenting on utube that Korean one was the least attractive and cute and a little too old to play that character and this die hard fan girl/guy was about to rip me apart that the Korean one is SO PRETTY and that I am jealous blab blab and will ask cops to arrest for calling his/her idol unattractive. Man, I am not that kind of sick fan for any celeb so I am super neutral when it comes to Leon Lai or others. Yes, everyone else probably think fakeness works and let’s be real superficial is the trend? haha Lol… That’s why I can never understand the way Andy Lau or twins girl on lying w/eyes wide open I mean yes they can say it’s their private life blab blab blab but you can shut it and walk away w/no comment instead of lying w/your eyes wide open? I don’t get that but perhaps ppl do get that and that’s why everyone is different. I like people who can say whatever they feel instead of saying it for grand gesture or what they think will be more favorable for others. I mean, sure we have to be polite too it’s never a good thing to be rude but honesty and politeness can still go together at least that’s what I think. Just like how that dude/girl keeps on stressing how Wong Cho Lam & that tall pretty wife. Sure, I don’t think I can marry someone that short and that much unattractive than me and he/she is totally entitled to his/her opinion but stressing it on every posts he/she sees about them is an issue. There’s no need to stress it too many times. Bringing others down will not boost themselves up. Peace!!

      5. @kiki Unfortunately some fans and anti-fans can be crazy. With the Internet, one can hide behind the computer and do damage. Crazy for sure.

on a side note: I watched the Taiwanese, Japanese and Korean F4. Personally thought the Japanese one was the best among the 3. Korean was the least favorite and the Taiwanese one will always hold something in my heart as it was the first I watched out of the 3.

      6. @kiki Fakeness works for their fans and most regular people who just have a passing interest in entertainment news. I’ve come across a lot of comments from people who are so obviously sucked in by what the media report but it’s easier to just laugh them off. No point in stressing over something that they’ve been fooled by for years or crazy fans who won’t accept anyone else’s opinions.

    2. @melodylai

It’s Asian entertainment we are discussing here. Not Hollywood, your body image is more regarded than your talent and capability. It’s unfortunate, and I don’t agree with it, but it’s the truth.

As for Leon, the guy may come off as rude, arrogant and direct on occasions, but at least, he ain’t fake.

  3. wow Jill is back I can’t wait she was awesome … too bad her drugs cost her career at Leon agency hope it turns around now and both sister does great!

  4. I never really know her as a singer or whatever but based on the left and right pictures, it is a BIG difference. Wow…
I hope I never blow up like that since I do like to eat a lot….lol… haha

    1. @kiki It is a huge difference!!! Depend how old you are.. as I noticed for myself after 30, my metabolism really slowed down and it took me longer to lose weight. Then after the kids, forget it! ehehehehhehehehe.

      1. @happybi
hhahaha lol…Well, at least you can use the excuse ‘ after the kids ‘ haha lol…..some can’t and just blows up continuously w/o the after a kid excuse.
Sometimes it probably depends on the individual as well. I know some people still young and had babies early but they look FAT after the kids but some can be older moms yet they are still as skinny as a stick like when they were single. haha…so I guess it really depends on the person as well.

      2. @happybi
        That too hahaha….LOL…
Who wants to be sweating and dying of exhaustion when we can just sit around and eat chips all day? lol…

      3. @kiki I swear my SIL is the same age as me and have 2 kids and eat more then me but she’s is like a stick!!! Good gene I’m telling you! My MIL is skinny too and she’s almost 65!

      4. @happybi
I know, I am telling you some you just don’t get how they can be that sticky/skinny skeleton bones when they already had a kid/kids but I’ve seem some can be crazy unnatural. So you can actually say good genes or they just have a very special good diet or something you know while the rest of us can gain a bit just by sipping water. haha lol
I know, my grandma is getting there but she’s almost 80 and she’s basically a averagely tall for an asian @5 ‘7 and at that age, you should still see some aging issues but she’s still very fit and slim as she’s always been. I have seen younger grandmas and they are not nearly as fit as she is. haha lol…

      5. @anon
True. We can’t say hitting the gym consistently will not help because it will help either in a big way or small way but it will probably still show some results if we are consistent. It all depends of whether we try hard enough. I love to eat but I also walk/exercise a lot still not as slim as a stick but it works well. haha lol….You can’t just sit and eat and not walk and work it. haha lol…

      6. @kiki

“You can’t just sit and eat and not walk and work it. haha lol…”

Actually, you could, it’s called a Ketogenic Diet with Intermittent Fasting.

      7. @anon
hahah lol….my sis’ fiancée actually does that and he says its BS…his belly doesn’t go down much from IF hahaha LOL…He says probably will go down if he starves himself for a week. haha lol….

      8. @anon
Wow, that’s really good. Good for you! Skipping gym would be awesome if that works for you.

  5. You are still prone to chronic diseases if your body fat % and insulin resistance are not within normal range. Unless she changes her way of eating, exercise alone cannot save her life.

  6. Sucks to be a celebrity. The camera in itself adds like 5-10lbs so if you want to look good, you need to be extra skinny to just look skinny. And in HK, looks are the pinnacle deciding factor whether you’ll make it or not. There are exceptions of course, but for majority of the ppl there, looks reign supreme.
