Jason Chan and Tony Hung to Become TVB’s Next Top Siu Sangs?

With numerous TVB artists leaving in recent years, the company is clearly lacking siu sangs. Jason Chan (陳智燊) and Tony Hung (洪永城), who both started off as hosts, have now turned to filming dramas. Offering them roles starring alongside popular actors, it seems like TVB is attempting to promote Jason and Tony to the top.

Tony had only joined TVB last June, after quitting his job in Now TV. “When I worked for other broadcasting companies in the past, even my relatives had no idea which programs I hosted.” He said. Now Tony is known for hosting one of TVB’s award-winning informational programs. “It wasn’t until hosting Pilgrimage of Hope <走過烽火大地> that people started to recognize me. There were even people greeting me in the streets, which really provided me with a feeling of satisfaction.”

Recently, Tony filmed an outdoors scene with Aimee Chan (陳茵媺) for his first drama, Unrequited Love in Double Cities <單戀雙城>. He felt a sense of awe to be working with veteran actors such as Benz Hui (許紹雄) and Elliot Yue (岳華), whom he watched on TV as a child. They all provided him with many helpful tips when filming. Furthermore, Tony would arrive early to work and ask around for as much advice as possible. “Wayne Lai (黎耀祥) told me to try my best to be natural, and to find a comfortable way to act. Roger Kwok (郭晉安) told me that acting is a game of memory.” Tony said.

On the other hand, although Jason has participated in many dramas in the past, he constantly portrayed small roles and still lacks acting experience. His first male lead was in Missing You <幸福摩天輪>, starring alongside Linda Chung (鍾嘉欣). Currently, he is filming The Love Firm <傳愛事務所>, collaborating with TV Kings, Wayne Lai and Moses Chan (陳豪).

When it was not Jason’s turn to film his scenes, he would also stand by and pay close attention to how his co-workers perform. Jason would mimic their lines to get the sense of their enunciation and tone. “It’s a rare opportunity to be working with two TV Kings. I need to take the opportunity to learn from them. It’s not just their acting methods, but also the way they communicate with others.”

Both Tony and Jason are eager to learn and become successful in their careers. With their strong efforts, they will be vastly improving in no time.

    1. What a joke…..in Jason’s last series that I saw on TVB, his acting is worse than 2nd tier……..if this is the best that TVB can come up for new Siu Sangs, then they have some serious problems……this guy will never make it pass a 2nd tier “ke le fe” or maybe some occasional MC/host jobs……….hahahahaahah

  1. Hell no!? I think Benjamin Yuen can act better and has better potential. Wonder why TVB not promoting him?

      1. yea…i like Ben better… well it is because Tony has top management like him…無铫高層余詠珊愛將洪永城(Tony)過檔TVB成「新寵」,首次拍攝劇集《單戀雙城》便擔正男主角. His first drama is main character.

      2. 余詠珊 seems to have a big say in TVB. She did it for Priscilla Wong (Wong Chui Yu) and now for Tony Hung. It is not fair for the current 2nd and 3rd line artistes who have worked for TVB for a long time.

    1. I think Benjamin Yuen has more acting experience in drama series than Tony Hung.

  2. Well…like Priscilla, Tony made it through connections. Connections get you somewhere nowadays.

    1. “Tony made it through connections.” ……….. Whom did he know in TVB? Some senior executives/management?

      1. I just learned it from the above post. It was 余詠珊, a TVB Senior Executive (I guess).

  3. Jason Chan is better looking than Tony Hung anyway. Not sure of Tony Hung’s acting though.

  4. no please! not these 2 people. they are poor!! i rather Him Law, Oscar Leung and co get promoted!

    1. honestly…i don’t really like Him Law…he only sell handsome…

      1. yes, very true. he became supporting so fast probably thanks to his cute looking face if nothing else hahaa…lol..

      2. that’s not true, like him or not you can’t deny him law’s acting is pretty decent and natural. it’s not entirely his fault that he’s typecast because of his looks.

      3. I also think Him Law can act. Give him time to polish his acting skills more.

  5. Jason looks like a decent and honest kind of guy. His acting is mediocre at best though. Rather stiff and unnatural, not sure if he would attract enough viewers as a main lead in a prime time drama. He also lacks a defined and commanding voice and personality. I need to see Tony Hung act to comment on him.

I guess they’re still years away from achieving “siu sang” capability status but I’m a fan of younger artists such as Nathan Ngai, Adrian Chau, Ronald Law, and Joey Law. I find TVB’s slow development of young (male) talent a turnoff for many HK youth.

    1. I agree, Jason Chan definitely has room for improvement but b/c he seems too good of a nice guy, it’s hard to see him as a commanding character yet. With time, i think he can improve for sure n he’s not that bad looking so let’s see if luck is on his side. ‘
As for the other one on the pic, i have NO IDEA who he is.

    2. tvb is old fashioned, that is why they are too slow to develop these young ppl. they always think a lead should be 30 +. its unnecessary, but its these old ppl in charge who dont know how to properly promote the young men to stardom quicker.

      1. totally agree, their market is mostly middle aged men or women hahaah..where as IDOL or young stars they dont even give it a thought to promote them. all you see in TVB are practially all veterans to be the leads. other countries, most of them are younger leads….i guess the market is different or they are just too many older generations that they dont even give a thought to younger generations?

  6. i am not their fans…but give them some time…most the current TV Kings have act for long time…learn and fail many times to improve….they are not become TV King in one day!

  7. Jason comes off too effeminine and doesn’t have a strong presence to be lead. his acting is also weird.

  8. among those new TVB actor, i like Ben the most…(even better than Him Him, maybe he is too handsome…not sure he can act anything else but handsome character)…among those more mature actor, i like Raymond Wong and Ruco Chan…sorry…not a big fans of Kenneth or Ron! (maybe i will be yelled at:(

    1. no, you won’t. i dont like kenneth or ron ahhaha… i love ruco the most, hes always been CUTE n handsome. raymond is ok but it seems he’s aging fast and he is not that old yet.

    2. same here, i don’t get the appeal of kenneth, he has his momments but for the most part his acting is for forced, specially with the “puppy eyes” expressions. plus, his mouth are so tiny…reminds me of a little clam lol…definitely not hot lol.

  9. As we all know TVB is known for promoting the wrong people so why is everyone is so shocked??? They promote people that can’t act and let others that have more talent suffer. Why am I not surprised??

  10. Aww Why the bashing on Jason, people? He just needs to gain more experience to improve.
Give the poor guy a fair go.

    1. Agree. Not every artiste is a born-artiste. He/she needs training and experience to shine. I think most people don’t think Jason should get a 1st lead role so soon. It is TVB’s fault, not Jason Chan’s fault.

      1. I agree with you. TVB should let him stick in the background until he is ready. No one should get 1st lead role so soon unless he is really that good to begin with.

  11. Jason’s acting was so bad in Missing You. Any other character can shine brighter than him when they appear on screen. He doesn’t have male lead image.

  12. obviously tvb thinks he has potential so they wanna promote him. just because his not that of a good actor doesnt mean he’ll never be one. you guys are just being slack. let me see you try and act for once.

  13. I don’t understand it. Why is everyone dissing the poor guy? He’s just doing his job and thus not everyone is perfect, even the best actors will find some flaws they need to work on. Omg lol as for the people who are complaining about not watching the future dramas that jason’s gonna star in, waste of my stomach space, not like your views are gonna make much of a difference anyway. By the way, does anyone remember what Jason’s character’s name was in the missing you drama?

    1. Do you know why? It is because Jason Chan has not got that many fans to support him in drama series. If he is someone else (one of the top siu sangs), there will be tons of people defending him.

  14. The thing with Jason is that he is like a block of wood even when singing and dancing at TVB celebration shows. His ability to wow the audience is zero.

  15. Have anyone seen Andy Lau Tak Wah, Chow Yunn Fat, Tony Leung Chiu Wai earliest TVB dramas, they had many flaws too!Even diamonds need cutting and polishing before they shine perfectly. This constant bashing….you don’t have to watch if you hate them so much. Have you guys ever thought they may be reading your comments??

    1. Andy Lau, Tony Leung and Chow Yun Fat had raw talent to begin with. They needed only good polishing. Jason Chan should be the ke-le-fes of those time and mind you ke-le-fes of those time like Ah Chan was way way way better than he was in his debut or subsequent roles. He is a bad actor. That’s that. Hopefully with time he may get better.

And if they can’t take criticism then don’t read. These are fair criticisms on their body of work, and not on their personal lives. If they expect words of adoration and adulation, they’re in the right business but wrong forum. There will be others to declare their undying love even if their terrible acting is looking straight at your face. Maybe with such bashing they will strive harder and not be complacent. This how those actors you named learn to be better. And mind you, Andy Lau stopped improving after DOMD and only improve much more after Infernal Affairs.
