Joey Yung: “Marriage is For Having Kids”
Joey Yung (容祖兒) appeared on TVB’s StarTalk to promote her new EP me, re-do, her first original release in two years. In the interview, she also opened up about her relationship with Wilfred Lau (劉浩龍) and her perspective on marriage.
Released last month, Joey’s new album features four new hit singles including “So Close, So Far” <這麼近(那麼遠) >, a cover of Jacky Cheung’s (張學友) song of the same name, and “Optimistic” <樂觀>, which was written by famous Japanese singer-songwriter Mayumi Itsuwa (五輪真弓). Joey shared that Mayumi Itsuwa only agreed to write a song for Joey after hearing her sing “Disheartened” <心淡>.
Admires Jacky Cheung
In addition to the international collaborations in the album, Joey also invited Jacky Cheung to star in the music video of “So Close, So Far” and Petrina Fung (馮寶寶) to star in the music video of “Drifting Red” <飄紅>.
While working with Jacky, Joey said she chatted a lot with the singer, who also offered her some life-changing advice. “We talked about his daughters. I lacked a father’s love when I was younger. [Jacky] is a good father, and he made me feel what it is like to have one.”
Joey also shared that Jacky is a very eloquent speaker, “He also told me that I should stop attending music award ceremonies. The awards nowadays aren’t like how they were before. Now it’s more about the entertainment. At the time, he really made me feel that I shouldn’t attend anymore.” Asked if Joey has decided that she will be absent at this year’s award ceremonies, she clarified, “There are too many apprehensions involved. There are many things to account for, so I’m undecided. It’s still early anyway — it’s only May!”
Joey Shares Marriage Perspective
In a stable relationship with fellow singer Wilfred Lau (劉浩龍), Joey was asked if they plan to get married any time soon. Joey admitted that she has not thought about marriage. The 34-year-old added that she is not in a rush to marry, and that only her fans and the media are rushing her. “To me, marriage is to have kids. If I don’t plan to have kids, we can just continue on like how we are now. But I do love children.”
If Joey were to get married, she prefers to hold a low-profile, private wedding. “I’ll rather get married overseas. I don’t want a wedding banquet. It’s a hassle, like preparing for a show. You have to contact many departments. I want it be simple. It’s possible that I may get married first before telling the public.”
When Joey and Wilfred’s relationship was first exposed, the public criticized Wilfred for their financial disparity. It was said that Joey’s position in the industry gave Wilfred a lot of stress. Joey commented, “When two people are together, we would not let such things constrain us. There are too many labels. I don’t think he has any hard feelings. I’m actually not very kingly! Behind the camera I’m a normal person.”
Joey has learned the benefit of slowing down her work over the years. “My career comes first, but life cannot be set aside. I’ve learned to cherish those beside me. In the past, it was really hard to find the time to be with my family, but now I’ll talk to my mother every day.”

Her biological clock is the ticking away…so she should keep searching and I bet she could afford a surrogate by the time she found Prince Charming.
@tess She is still dating Wifrey Lau, so why she has to search for another guy?
@alluka @tess
I believe tess is implying that Wilfred isn’t good enough for Joey, and that she’s better off bearing a child in the near future as her biological clock is soon due for a natural birth.
Tess, are you Joey’s mom?
